THIRTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ OCTOBER 29, 2017

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

We keep two important days of worship this week. All Saints Day (a holy day of obligation) on Wednesday and All Souls Day on Thursday.

Since I like to describe the life a lesser-known saint for the first, I’d like to call attention to one who can help us appreciate how important both feasts are, St. Giuseppe Moscati (1880-1927), who was canonized in 1987. His life speaks eloquently about what it’s like to live as a saint, and he also has a beautiful insight to console those who will be remembering loved ones who have died. He was the son of fine Catholic parents. His father was a prominent judge who resisted the strong pressure that then prevailed to comply with anti-Catholic Masonic influences. As a student at the Univer-sity of Naples, Giuseppe became a friend of one of his professors, also the rector of the University, Gaetano Quagliariello, who taught him much about what he termed the “physical pain” and “spiritual bewilderment” the sick experienced in their illnesses, a lesson that would constantly inform Moscati’s life as a physician. Giuseppe Moscati became a model doctor. His learning made him an admired professor of medicine who was revered by his students. But his dedication to his healing work was his signal characteristic. Some of it occurred during moments of true heroism, such as when he courageously helped evacuate a nursing home while the volcano Mount Vesuvius was erupting in 1906, and when he cared for sufferers from cholera in Naples during a 1911 outbreak of the disease. He was renowned for his abilities as a diagnostician and was often called upon to make consults, sometimes at distant places. But mostly he worked for years at the city’s Hospital for Incurables. In addition, he visited and cared for the poor of Naples, charging no fees for his services and often paying for their medicine. His life of faith was always his source of strength for what he did, whether it helped him cure the sick or prepare those who would not get better to meet the Lord in death. “Let us not forget, every day, and even every moment,” he said, “to make an offering of our actions to God, doing everything for love of Him.” Moscati had many appealing human qualities that endeared him to those who crossed his path. Two were his love for the beauties of nature and his deep affection for his homeland. Both are apparent in a letter he wrote as he traveled to Lourdes:

We are going through valleys enclosed by mountains that are covered with chestnut trees…. Here and there the silvery ribbon of the rivers: how similar this scenery is to the unforgettable landscape of Serino, the only place in the world,

Irpinia, where I would gladly spend my days, because it holds the dearest, sweetest memories of my childhood and the remains of my dear ones.

Similarly, he had an appreciation for the lovelier features of classical Naples, and regretted the way they were gradually disappearing:

The summit of the Vomero district, overwhelmed by geometric tenement houses, by now has a Cubist profile, similar to the zig-zag braid on an Italian major general’s cap. … No more trellises of the rural inns, with their hummingbird vines, spangled by the scarlet of the blood-red flowers, and with their grape clusters continually surrounded by the humming of bees, like a submissive song to productive nature. They will be replaced by penthouses with their art nouveau windows!

When one of his friends, a lawyer named Mariconda, lost his sister, Moscati worte him a letter of condolence that shows his tenderness of feelings and his firm faith that God has many great blessings for us on the other side of death:

Life is an instant; honors, triumps, riches and knowledge fail, before the fulfillment of the cry of Genesis, the cry flung by God against guilty man: “You shall die!” But life does not end with death, it continues in a better world. To everyone has been promised, after the redemption of the world, the day that will reunite us with our dear departed ones, and that will bring us back to the supreme Love!

After Giuseppe Moscati died, at the age of just 47, someone left an anonymous tribute in the visitors’ book at the entrance to his house. It said:

You did not want flowers, or tears either: but we mourn the fact that the world has lost a saint, Naples has lost an example of all the virtues and the poor sick people have lost everything!

His old professor, Quagliariello, had a slightly differing but equally valid view, saying:

No, … the world did not lose a saint, because saints are not lost. They live in eternity, and their charitable and apostolic work does not end with their brief life on earth: they are the guide, the perennial example to this humanity which so often, too often, loses the way of its truth, of its sole destiny: being reunited in eternity with God the creator of all things.

PRAYER FOR OUR PRIESTS

Lord God, most holy, we approach you in gratitude for your holy ordained priesthood. You

have called these men to be set apart and to shepherd your people,as you shepherd your entire church. We pray for them in their daily work. Grant to them an increase in spiritual gifts and grace, so they may be prepared for the tasks at hand. Lead them not into temptation and protect them from the grasp of the evil one. It is through the sacraments they confer that we encounter the divine in a real and profound way. May your church never lose sight of these, your special sons, and may we, the body of Christ, never fail to cherish the gift of their lives, which they have freely given to you and your holy church. We ask this in the name of Jesus, your Son. Amen.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION “You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your mind.” MATT 22:37

Do you put other “gods” before God? Is your love of money, power, status or some personal possession greater than your love for God? Do you really recognize that everything you have and everything you are is a gift from God? The good news—it’s not too late to put God first in your life in all things.
