Dear Parishioners,

As we begin the new year, a good resolution would be to set aside a specific time each day for prayer. You may wonder, what should I do during this time? A suggestion that may be helpful is offered in Matthew Kelly’s book, Rediscover Jesus, An Invitation.

The Prayer Process

♦ Gratitude: Begin by thanking God in a personal dialogue for whatever you are most grateful for today.

♦ Awareness: Revisit the times in the last twenty-four hours when you were and were not the-best-version-of-yourself. Talk to God about these situations and what you learned from them.

♦ Significant Moments: Identify something you experienced today and explore what God might be trying to say to you through that event (or person).

♦ Peace: Ask God to forgive you for any wrong you have committed (against yourself, another person, or Him) and to fill you with a deep and abiding peace.

♦ Freedom: Speak with God about how he is inviting you to change your life, so that you can experience the freedom to be the-best-version-of-yourself.

♦ Others: Lift up to God anyone you feel called to pray for today, asking God to bless and guide them.

♦ Finish by praying the Our Father.

This may also be a time to consider attending daily Mass. It is a good spiritual activity that feeds us with the Word of God and His Body and Blood as food on our journey to the kingdom of heaven.

I wish to thank all those that sent cards, spirituals, and gifts over Christmas. May the Lord bless you for your kindness and generosity.

I thank you for your generous support to the Clergy Collection that went to the support of the priests of the Archdiocese.

As a reminder, we will be having our monthly Healing Mass this Wednesday, January 6, starting with the rosary at 7:00 p.m.

May Jesus continue to shepherd you in all of your needs.

God love you,

Holy Year of Mercy

December 8, 2015 to November 20, 2016 Immaculate Conception to Christ the King

Please place this page on your refrigerator for this week’s reflection

"We recall the poignant words of Saint John XXIII when, opening the Council, he indicated the path to follow: “Now the Bride of Christ wishes to use the medicine of mercy rather than taking up arms of severity… The Catholic Church, as she holds high the torch of Catholic truth at this Ecumenical Council (Vatican II), wants to show herself a loving mother to all; patient, kind, moved by compassion and goodness toward her separated children”. Blessed Paul VI spoke in a similar vein at the closing of the Council: “We prefer to point out how charity has been the principal religious feature of this Council… the old story of the Good Samaritan has been the model of the spirituality of the Council… a wave of affection and admiration flowed from the Council over the modern world of humanity. Errors were condemned, indeed, because charity demanded this no less than did truth, but for individuals themselves there was only admonition, respect and love. Instead of depressing diagnoses, encouraging remedies; instead of direful predictions, messages of trust issued from the Council to the present-day world. The modern world’s values were not only respected but honored, its efforts approved, its aspirations purified and blessed… Another point we must stress is this: all this rich teaching is channeled in one direction, the service of mankind, of every condition, in every weakness and need”."

- Pope Francis, on The Jubilee Year

To experience the Lord’s mercy more fully during this Holy Year of Mercy, consider:

• Attending Mass more regularly • Joining us for adoration • Receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation (confession) • Forgiving others • Doing random acts of kindness • Tithing

PARENTING CORNER

We celebrate the Epiphany this weekend. Several parents in our Religious Education Focus Groups offered their customs to mark the celebration:

* We attend Mass and pray for family and friends, especially those from other cultures, a tradition which reflects the inclusiveness of Christ's message - that He came for all nations.

* We add the Wise Men to the manger.

* The children wrap a little gift in celebration of the gifts the 3 Wise Men brought to Jesus.

* Children wake up to find little gifts and then present them to some needy children.

* We reflect on the year's favorite memories and write them in a journal. We write out and discuss our hopes and expectations for the coming year.

* We make a Little Christmas dinner.

Reminder! CORI Forms

If you have received a CORI and/or Code of

Conduct form in the mail, please return them with

a copy of your license or other valid ID to the

rectory. Thank you!

LITURGY CORNERLITURGY CORNERLITURGY CORNERLITURGY CORNER

On the feast of Epiphany we celebrate a holy day adorned with the three mysteries: this day the star led the Magi to the manger, this day wine was made from water at the wedding, and this day Christ willed to be baptized in the Jordan by John in order to save us.

Some customs associated with Epiphany:

• Solemn blessing of water- With the commemoration of Christ’s baptism the custom of blessing baptismal water and nearby rivers or fountains was developed.

• Blessing of Homes - A beautiful and impressive rite of blessing the homes of the faithful. After the blessing the initials of the legendary names of the Magi - Gaspar, Melchior, Baltasar - are written with white chalk on the inside of the door framed by the number of the year, and all the symbols are connected by the cross. This year’s symbol would be 20 + G + M + B +15.

• Baking a King’s Cake: Insert a bean into the cake batter and whoever finds the bean is the “prince” or “princess” for the day. That family tradition also hosts the next neighborhood dessert.

Christmas Collection The Christmas Collection for the Clergy Health and Retirement Trust helped to care for the health and well-being of our priests. Our parish contribution of $ 23,766 will have a significant impact on the quality of life programs we are able to provide for our priests in the new year. If you did not have the opportunity to participate and you wish to make a gift, please visit clergyfunds.org or simply text the word PRIEST to 56512 (Msg. & data rates may apply). Thank you for your prayers and generous support of our priests.
