THANKS FOR THE GIFT OF WARMTH The following note of gratitude was sent from the Life Source Hospice Services at Bergen Regional Medical Center to acknowledge the gift of shawls and lap blankets that were prayerfully made through out the year by our parish Shawl Ministry.

Saint Joseph’s Prayer Shawl Ministry has donated over fifty prayer shawls and lap blankets to Life Source Hospice Service. They were distributed to those in need at the Bergen Regional Medical Center on Thursday, December 15 following their Holiday Celebration. It was a wonderful event and the smiles on the faces of the receivers of the shawls was a blessing to us all.

The care and the love of knitting and crocheting have been combined into a prayerful ministry that reaches out to those in need of comfort and solace. Many blessings are knitted into every shawl. The knitter begins each shawl with prayers for the recipient. Intentions are continued throughout the creation of the shawl. When the shawl is completed, it is offered a final blessing before being sent along its way.

Again Life Source Hospice wishes to give heartfelt thanks for all the hard work these ladies put into these shawls and we are looking forward to continue working with them in the future.

Sincerely, Angela Marsh Life Source Hospice Services 230 E. Ridgewood Ave. Suite 307 Paramus, NJ 07652888-865-5103 [email protected] www.lifesourcehospice.com.

SHAWL MINISTRY The Shawl Ministry will meet the second Tuesday of the month, from 2 pm to 4 pm in the rectory basement meeting room. All are welcome to come and join in this outreach. For information call Pat (201-261-4323) or Barbara (201-261-0298).

2ND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JANUARY 15, 2012

THE PASTOR’S COLUMN

A GIFT REPORT

In last Sunday's column I mentioned that we as a parish would be receiving two gifts last week, and that certainly was the case. Last Sunday, January 8, our music ministers and other musically gifted folks gave us An Afternoon of Christmas Joy.

About 200 people were present in our church for a program of Christmas music that ranged from O Holy Night to Jingle Bell Rock. The program included our leaders of song, namely, Domenick Panfile, Elena Gutierrez, Sean Farley, Josephine Peacock, and Danielle Gherardi.

Elena Gutierrez, Danielle Gherardi, Fr. Roy Regaspi, and David Milnes are all smiles following their performances

at our Afternoon of Christmas Joy.

The program also featured our Adult Choir, our School Choir, and our musicians, Monroe Quinn, Peter Greco, and Jeffry Braun. Also visiting artists, David Milnes and Ivana Joy Kunc. Each singer and musician not only revealed their great musical abilities but also their engaging personalities.

Our Afternoon of Christmas Joy also featured two of our staff members in different roles. Father Roy, despite dealing with a cold, thrilled the congregation with his voice, and also proved he could imitate Alvin, the Chipmunk! And Heath Winborn, our Director of Operation, introduced O Come, All Ye Faithful on the bagpipes. The audience also had a chance to join in three songs with the choir. Everyone present left with joy in their heart and a smile on their face! I have only heard rave reviews and requests to continue with such a program next Christmas!

Love, Father Tom Iwanowski

I want to thank all involved for a wonderful afternoon, in particular, our Director of Music, Monroe Quinn, who put the program together and who continues to demonstrate his amazing skills on the guitar.

The following evening, Monday, January 9, we had the official presentation of Forward in Faith 2016, the strategic plan for every aspect of our parish, including our school. I am happy to report that more than 150 people took the time to come and listen. The Steering

Committee, which has now become the Implementation Committee, presented the plan in a very understandable and professional way.

There were presentations on each major area of the plan including; Worship, Leadership, Life Long Faith Formation, Community/Family Life, Sharing the Good News/Evangelization, Stewardship, Service, and Saint Joseph School. In its entirely Forward in Faith 2016 contains 119 action items. 77 of them deal with the parish and 42 specifically address areas related to the school. At the end of the meeting an executive summary of Forward in Faith was distributed to those in attendance. In the weeks ahead this summary will appear in the bulletin and also on our website.

The program on Monday also included a period for Questions & Answers and a time for prayer. There were final comments from Mr. Thomas Heding, the representative from Meitler Consultants, who worked most closely with us. He expressed his high regard for the work done by the Steering Committee and for the cooperation, input, and enthusiasm of the many and many people who helped to shape Forward in Faith.

As was stated again and again last Monday, Forward in Faith 2016, is not over. In fact, it really begins now as we as a parish take the plan we have formulated and begin to implement the action items we have surfaced.

Forward in Faith is like a road map that charts the way for us to move forward as a parish in the years ahead. Without a plan, without a road map, we are like someone driving a car with no sense of where he or she eventually wants to arrive. The person expends time and fuel but may end up lost and perhaps right back where he or she started. As a parish we want to expend our time, talent, treasure moving forward in the direction set by our strategic plan. A plan that I believe was put together not just by the people of Saint Joseph Parish with the help of Meitler Consultants, but also by the Holy Spirit working in our parish.

THE ARCHBISHOP’S ANNUAL APPEAL - HOW YOUR CONTRIBUTION HELPS OTHERS

Individuals and families living with disabilities, particularly developmental disabilities, often feel at the margins of parish life. They also typically have additional struggles concerning their relationship with God, world, church, and school systems.

The Archdiocesan Department of Pastoral Ministry with Persons with Disabilities works to build structures of support at the parish level to address this special group. The department seeks to affirm the Baptism of people with disabilities, acknowledging their call to participate in the life and mission of the Church, to the extent that each person desires and is able. This includes catechesis and faith formation, the sacramental life of the Church, evangelization, outreach and pastoral ministry.

Last year, with the help of this department, 112 parishes in the Archdiocese offered catechesis for individuals with disabilities. It also promotes faith-based support for mothers and fathers, Inclusive Family Masses and has worked directly and indirectly with more than 500 families over the past few years.

Thank you for your support of the Archbishop’s Annual Appeal, which helps bring to reality the experience of welcome and affirmation for individuals and families living with disabilities in the Archdiocese of Newark.

A MUSICAL NOTE Peter Greco, our music minister at our 10:30 am Mass in Mary’s Chapel in the lower church, will be away until the end of February. He kindly offered to help a neighboring parish whose organist is unavailable. We look forward to Peter’s return in March. During the Sundays he is away, Charles Santoro, who has helped on other occasions, will be with us. Please give him a warm welcome.

GIVING THOUGHT The month of January is a time for making resolutions for this New Year of 2012. A resolution that we all can make that will help our parish and help us to grow in our awareness that everything we possess comes from God is to give more thought to the amount we place in the Sunday collection or the amount we have designated to be electronically given to parish from our checking or credit account. Our Parish Finance Council has asked us to give at least 2% of our income to the church. As they put it, 2% PLUS Because It’s My Parish and I’m Grateful. Those words would make a good resolution for 2012. Please Note: The total of our 2011 Christmas Collection will appear in next Sunday’s bulletin.

ST. JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ

The Gospel is the Good News about Jesus. The Gospel Reading for today is from St. John

Chapter 1, verses 35-42.

John the Baptist was standing with two of his followers and as he watched Jesus walk by , he said, “Behold the Lamb of God”. With that the two men left John to follow Jesus. They wanted to know where Jesus lived. So they followed Jesus to his house and stayed with him all afternoon. One of the men was Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter. Andrew went to look for his brother and he found him he told Simon Peter that he had found the Messiah. When Jesus met Simon Peter, he changed Simon's name to just Peter. Peter means rock. God knew that Peter would be strong enough to hold his Church together. God knew that Peter would be a good foundation for His Church.

Compiled by the Liturgy of the Word with Children Committee

NOTE TO PARENTS

The Liturgy of the Word with Children takes place at our 9am

Sunday Mass. During that Mass the younger children are sent

forth just before the First Reading and go to the Mary’s Chapel/

lower church for their own celebration of God's Word. The read-

ings, homily, songs and prayers are geared to their understanding.

The children return before the presentation of the gifts to continue

the celebration of the Liturgy with their families. We want God's

Good News to be exciting for the younger members of our parish

family. If you want to help this Committee in any way, you can

contact us at ([email protected]).

NOTE TO KIDS

Be sure to use your special envelopes in the Sunday collection. You can get extra envelopes during the

Liturgy of the Word with Children. Just ask Fr. Tom.

MISSION OF THE WEEK

I will show my thanks to God for the all the nice things that God does for me by doing something nice for a

member of my family.
