12th ANNUAL DIVINE MERCY CONFERENCE —APRIL 8

The Annual Conference on the Message of Fatima and Divine Mercy will take place on Saturday, April 8 from 9:00 am-5:30 pm at Cardinal Spellman High School in Bronx, NY. The featured speaker will by Fr. Andrew Apostoli, CFR. For information and registration, go to TheDivineMercy.org/bronx or call 1-800-462-7426. You can also pick up a brochure in our church literature racks or at the rectory/parish office.

DIVINE MERCY The Legion of Mary will distribute Divine Mercy Novena pamphlets at the doors of the church NEXT weekend (April 8-9). The message of The Divine Mercy, which is based on the writings of Saint Faustina Kowalska, a Polish nun who wrote a diary of the revelations she received about God’s mercy, is that God loves all of us. He wants us to recognize that His mercy is greater than our sins, so that we will call upon Him with trust, receive His mercy, and let it flow through us to others. On each day of the Novena, which begins on Good Friday and goes until Divine Mercy Saturday (April 22 this year), there is a new petition that seeks God’s mercy for different purposes.

The Legion of Mary has been praying the rosary with our children in grades 3-6 in our Religious Education program. In the photo above, Grade 3 students created a giant rosary to use in their prayer.

SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

Friday is the feast day for St. John Baptist de la Salle (1651-1719), founder of the Congregation of Christian Brothers, often known as the La

Salle Christian Brothers. They are not the same as the Irish Christian Brothers who run Bergen Catholic, whose founder was Brother Edmund Rice. Three retired Irish Christian Brothers (Brother Michael, Brother Luke and Brother James) live in the residence behind our church. St. John’s Christian Brothers got their start in France.

St. John, who came from a wealthy aristocratic family from northern France, began his training for the priesthood when he was just eleven. After his studies were interrupted by his need to tend to family matters after his parents died, he was ordained in

1678, earned a doctorate in theology three years later, and seemed headed for a major Church position. His entry in Butler’s Lives of the Saints says that “He settled down to the comfortable life of a cathedral canon with private means, attending daily services but without any parochial responsibilities to disturb him.” Then he ran into Adrien Nyel, a layman who had opened four schools for the poor and who now asked John to help him open another one in Reims. Soon a second school followed, and by now John was committing his personal funds to make its existence possible. At first John was appalled by the poor quality of the teachers who made up the schools’ faculties, regarding them as being inferior to the servants he was used to being with at his home. In time John would reveal his own exceptional talents for training teachers and for organizing schools with high standards. He soon led a household of brothers who became the congregation he founded. None of them would be ordained priests, something still characteristic of the community’s life. Their purpose and ideal was well expressed in their Rule, which stated that their mission was to be

… ambassadors of Christ to the young; since it was their duty to pass on the faith, they must themselves be steeped in it.

They resolved to honor the will of God and to govern their conduct by his teachings. John wrote a number of books in which he described how his schools should be run, including a very detailed one, The Conduct of Christian Schools. His educational innovations included teaching students in class groups instead of in one-on-one tutorials. His work knew great challenges, but has enjoyed enormous success and influence. Pope Pius XII designated him chief patron saint for all who teach the young. His last words were:

(continued above)

“I adore in all things the holy will of God in my regard.” They aptly summarize how he tried to live. I’ve encountered only two of St. John Baptist de la Salle’s spiritual sons in my life. The first was Brother Michael, the dean of discipline at Paramus Catholic Boys School when the brothers used to run it some years ago. Brother Michael was about six foot-eight. If one of my altar boys at Holy Trinity in Hackensack was to be going to Paramus Catholic and committed some deed of misbehavior, I would tell him that he’d better not try that at Paramus Catholic—not with Brother Michael around! One day, when I went to the school to help with confessions and was a little late, I walked down a long corridor and saw a gigantic figure approaching me. That has to be Brother Michael, I thought. I also imagined that somehow he must know that I was using fear of him to subdue my unruly servers, which, of course, he didn’t. When we met up, it was clear that he was a kind and gentle man. The second was a former La Salle Christian brother I met when we were seminarians at Darlington. He was a late vocation to the priesthood, unusual in those days: a likable , free-spirited 47-year-old who had a good, if zany, sense of humor. At a time when we weren’t allowed to have cars, he had several genuine jalopies, none of them properly registered. He drew up a hand-made license plate, which he would use for each car as required. One of the cars had an accelerator pedal that didn’t work—so he tied a string from the engine through the driver’s-side vent window and, when he wanted to give the car gas, he would pull on the string, and it worked. When our professor for St. John’s Gospel was covering today’s passage about Jesus restoring Lazarus to life after he had been in the tomb four days (Jn 11, 1-45), the ex-brother raised his hand to ask a question: “Father, it says in my Bible that Lazarus came forth from the tomb. Who were the other three?” The instructor was not amused. The raising of Lazarus was Jesus’s most astonishing miracle. It attracted more believers to him, heightened the resolve of some of his opponents to do away with him, and also made Lazarus something of a celebrity, while putting his own life in danger (Jn 12, 9-10). For us, this great miracle is one more indication that our own destiny, by the gift of God, is to survive death and to live forever. It certainly helps us get ready for Easter, which is fast approaching.

Msgr. David Hubba
