From the Pastor

Epiphany Sunday is always a joyous time in the Church. The story of the Magi as recorded in the Gospel of Matthew is one with which we usually become familiar when we are young. This day is filled with symbolism; it is filled with stewardship. The prophet Isaiah perhaps more than any other of the prophets anticipated the coming of Christ. He foresaw details about the coming of the Messiah which are

uncanny in their accuracy. It is almost as if Isaiah foresaw the glory of Christ’s Epiphany. “Rise up in splendor…Your light has come…Then shall you be radiant at what you see.” The light of Christ has shone and is shining upon us. However, we are to do more than just bask in it. We are to be “radiant at what we see.” This is the call to stewardship; we are to take that light, that Good News, and we are to share it and spread it. Biblical scholars are of the opinion that St. Paul wrote his letter to the Ephesians (from which our Second Reading is drawn) during a time when he was under house arrest in Rome. Note that he was not in prison. At that time “house arrest” meant you could move easily around your house during the day under the watchful eyes of soldiers, but could not leave. At night you were chained to a soldier who slept next to you. Paul speaks of being a steward of God’s grace. You might say he realizes that he is not a prisoner of the Romans, but a “prisoner” of the Lord. He has felt and realized the light of Christ referenced by Isaiah, and he has spent his apostolic life as a disciple, as one who has indeed been a steward and shared the glory he has realized. The Apostle Luke provided us with a detailed accounting of Christ’s birth in Bethlehem. The visit of the Magi would seem to have occurred some time, perhaps even months, after the Lord’s nativity. Their trek and visit is only mentioned in the Gospel of Matthew. Much has been written and surmised in relation to who they were, and the significance of their journey and visit. For us as stewards it is well to take note of two important aspects of this story. When Jesus was born, it was first revealed to humble and plain shepherds. The revelation for those considered more honorable and learned, namely, the Magi, occurred much later. Another perspective is that Jesus came to the poor first, and then the rich. The point is that He came and comes to everyone, each one of us as well. An “Epiphany” is, as normally used, a revelation. The revelation in this case, for us, and for the Magi, is the realization not only of the divinity of the Lord, but also the fact that Jesus came as the Savior of all. Those first shepherds who approached and worshiped Jesus were Jews; these Magi were gentiles. We need to respond to this revelation, just as the Magi did. They could have merely admired the glorious star which they saw in the sky and philosophized as to what it was and what it meant. However, they did more than that. They acted. We, too, are called to act through stewardship. We are called to more than just follow the Light of Christ. We are called to respond and to act and to do something to show that we are indeed disciples. That would make us, too, wise.

Blessings, Fr. John

Young at Heart

Please Convert to our new Online Giving and Payment System

On November 1, 2015, St. Mark implemented a new Online Giving System. The current system, Direct Give, will continue to be available during the transition.

We will now be using Online Giving, a division of Our Sunday Visitor, as our electronic offertory vendor. Considerable thought and analysis has gone into this decision. Some of the reasons for the change include better pricing, more effective data interface and back office support, and an improved envelope service for additional savings. The new system will be much easier and more user-friendly. It is a web-based application that allows you to access your account from anywhere, using your computer, smartphone, or tablet. You can use either a bank account or credit card, or both.

During the next month, please close out your account with Direct Give, and sign up with Online Giving. Instructions for closing out your account and opening a new one, are available on the website at www.stmarknc.org. If you have any issues setting up your new account, please contact Customer Service for Online Giving.

If you are not currently using online payment for your weekly collection donations, now is a great time to start! You will be able to help us further automate the bookkeeping function. With this new system, you are able to make your weekly donations, additional one-time donations such as Christmas, and other payments, including Faith Formation tuition and special collections. You can see reports on your contribution history and generate tax statements at each year’s end. Even if you typically use your offering envelopes, you may wish to contribute online to a particular collection. Check out our website for more information!

Please contact us or refer to the bulletin board to learn more about how you can help. We look forward to hearing from and empowering you to use your God-given talents to provide service to others.

We would like to have at least six parishioners come forward with their stories. These small video clips would be no more than three to four minutes in length.

If you have a story to share, please contact Donna Smith 704-948-1306 or [email protected] NOW! We hope to begin filming in early January.

The video will be used during our Lenten CALL series, which begins the week of Feb. 7. This spring our CALL program will be studying The Church of Mercy by Pope Francis.

Community Outreach For St. Mark Parishioners

Funeral Planning Guide St Mark has put together a booklet, Funeral Planning Guide for the Mass of Christian Burial. This handbook will discuss the three principle movements of the funeral liturgy: the vigil or wake, the Mass of Christian Burial, and the burial rites. Copies of this booklet may be obtained from the office or from the funeral director with whom you are working. Upon the death of a loved one, please contact the funeral home so that they may assist you in making the necessary funeral arrangements. We encourage parishioners to do pre-planning to make a difficult time easier for your family.

One area where questions have arisen is cremation. Although cremation is now permitted by the Church, it does not enjoy the same value as burial of the body. The Church clearly prefers and urges that the body of the deceased be present for the funeral rite, since the presence of the human body better expresses the values which the Church affirms in those rites. If, because of special or extraordinary circumstances cremation is chosen, this should follow the funeral liturgy. If this is not possible, the cremated remains will be placed in the church prior to the funeral liturgy. At the start of the funeral liturgy the cremated remains will be taken to the entry of the Church where the liturgy will begin. Following the opening rite, a family member or the funeral director will carry the cremated remains in procession to the front of the Church and place them on the appropriate table.

The Catholic Church commends its deceased members to the mercy of God by means of its funeral rite. The cremated remains of a body should be treated with the same respect given to the human body from which they came. The cremated remains should be buried in a grave or entombed in a mausoleum or columbarium. The practice of scattering cremated remains on the sea, from the air, or on the ground, or keeping cremated remains in the home of a relative or friend of the deceased are not the reverent disposition the Church requires.

If the body of the deceased is to be cremated, arrangements for the committal of the cremated remains must be made prior to the celebration of the funeral rites at St Mark. No funeral rites may be celebrated if the remains are not going to be buried or entombed as is proper and right for the Christian faithful. If committal is to take place in another state, the funeral home or family is asked to provide a letter indicating when and where the final committal will occur.

Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Charlotte Needs Your Food Beginning in mid-January, there will be a bin in the entrance of the narthex of the Church labeled “Catholic Charities” in which you can place any non-perishable foods to donate to their food pantry. This collection will be on-going and you may drop off food at any time. Please make sure the items are non-perishable, e.g. peanut butter and jellies (in plastic containers), boxed goods, canned goods, etc., basically anything that won’t spoil before it can be used.

Pope Francis challenges us in this Year of Mercy to take care of our fellow man. What better way is there to do this than to help provide for man’s basic needs of food, clothing and shelter?

Take advantage of our grocery stores “buy one, get one free” program and donate the “free” one to Catholic Charities. It’s a habit that is fun to get into! And it’s an easy way to teach your young ones about caring for your fellow man.

The Maronite Mission of Charlotte, an Eastern Rite Catholic Church, is offering weekly Masses on Sundays at 12:30 pm at St. Matthew South Campus, 4116 Waxhaw-Marvin Road, Waxhaw, NC. The Maronite Church dates back to the early Christians of Antioch where “they were called Christians for the first time” (Acts 11:26). The Church still uses as Her liturgical language Syriac, a dialect of the Aramaic that Jesus Himself spoke, and takes Her name from the hermit-priest, Saint Maron, who died in 410 AD. The Charlotte community has been blessed by His Excellency Bishop Peter Jugis who embraced the Maronite Mission. The Maronite Mission found a home at St. Matthew Church through the guidance and blessings of Msgr. John McSweeney who took the Community under his wings. The Maronite Mission of Charlotte is pastored by Fr. Elie Mikhael, parochial vicar at St. Matthew. He can be reached at 704-543-7677 x 1043 or [email protected].
