DRIVE: On November 11 we celebrate the feast
day of our patron saint, Martin of Tours. In his
honor, we are asking for new or “gently used”
coats and new blankets to be given to Parish

CONGRATULATIONS: Congratulations to

Saints and Sinners
November is dedicated to the holy saints and holy souls who have gone before us. Where we walk,
they once walked. Where they have gone, we hope to follow. I remember touring catacombs of the dead in
Sicily. On display were real skeletons of the dead, and they spoke out to us from the grave; the sign read:
“You are where we once stood, we are where you will one day be.” It was a macabre setting, but a sobering
message. All around you this past week you saw the orange and black colors of Halloween. They are the col‐
ors of the orange pure beeswax candles and black bunting used in the ancient Catholic Funeral Masses before
Vatican II. Halloween is the night of the ghouls and goblins, but for us Christians, All Saints Day overshad‐
ows death with the triumphant victory of the saints about whom we have studied: Saint Augustine, Saint
Thomas Aquinas, Saint Martin of Tours, Saint Bernadette. All Souls is the day we remember those people we
actually knew in this life: your mother, your father, your child, your teacher, your friend who now lives with
God in eternal joy. Jesus tells us in the gospel: “This is the will of my heavenly Father: that I should not lose any‐
thing He gave to me, but raise it on the last day.” God wants us to live with Him forever and He gives us every
chance in this life, and even after we die. This is why we continuously offer Masses for the dead— to assist
them to heaven. I hope you have enrolled your deceased loved ones in the nine‐day novena of Masses offered
in every church throughout the world beginning on All Souls Day, November 2nd.
Pope Benedict XVI has spoken words that are essential to remember: “Every saint had a past, but
every sinner has a future.” Please remember those words. Saints did not always begin their lives well, but
they finished well. St. Augustine, Saint Thomas Becket and others had dubious and selfish beginnings, but
faithful and glorious endings to their lives. The process toward sainthood is not always pleasant, it can be
purgative, so as to burn away the dross and leave only the gold. Saul was knocked off a horse, other saints
were rejected and persecuted. They were ordinary people who did ordinary things extraordinarily well.
After 30 long years of his mother’s prayers for his conversion, the great Saint Augustine received baptism at
the hands of Saint Ambrose. He went from rogue to Christian, to priest, to bishop, to saint. And in the end, he
made the profound statement: “Too late have I come to love Thee, Lord.” Why did I waste so much time on
myself? Why didn’t I love you sooner Lord?
And then there are times when things can go tragically wrong. There is an old apocryphal story about
a young man named Pietro Bandinelli. It is one of my favorite stories. When Leonardo daVinci spent years
painting the masterpiece “The Last Supper” he scoured Italy for the models of each apostle. He selected a
young man named Pietro Bandinelli who looked exactly as a striking vision of Jesus. His presence conveyed
the virtues of Jesus’ compassion, gentleness and holiness. Bandinelli sat for daVinci to let his face be used for
Christ. Many years went by but daVinci had not yet finished the painting. He finished Peter, James,
Thomas, John, and then the last was Judas the traitor. It had to be someone who conveyed despair,
hopelessness and sin. He found his Judas in a prison. As the portrait was near to completion Judas became
despairing in grief. “Do you not remember me?” asked Judas. “I am Pietro Bandinelli. I was the model for
your Jesus.” His life of innocence and holiness had decayed into crime, despair and sin. Bandinelli had made
the greatest of all mistakes; he had gone from saint to sinner.

STEWARDSHIP Our Way of Life
AWARENESS WEEKEND: When we trust that God loves us as individuals, as we are, we can’t
help but embrace stewardship as our way of life. As people who embrace stewardship, we
continue to share the Good News with all whose lives we touch.
SOME STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT: “The greatest among you will be the one who serves the
rest,” Jesus says in today’s Gospel. What wonderful good news for those who give of their time in
service it others.
On November 11, we celebrate out patron, Martin of Tours. The legend depicted in our beautiful
mosaic shows him sharing his cloak with a poor beggar, who appeared in a vision as Jesus. He was
a soldier, monk, and bishop who was a devoted peacemaker. As good stewards, may we aspire to
Martin’s example to be ready to spend ourselves in service to others, whenever and wherever, the
Lord asks.
LIVING STEWARDSHIP: We are grateful this week for all stewards who make certain that what‐
ever gifts are theirs to share, they stand ready to share them lovingly – in justice – with others.
CELEBRATING OUR GIFTEDNESS: We celebrate the gifts of time, leadership, and generosity

EMPLOYMENT MINISTRY: At St. Martin’s
Employment Program we maintain a database
of personnel seeking employment in the local
Long Island market. We assist them by
providing counseling services including resume
development and by making available a wide
range of job search capabilities. Our extensive
client database covers a wide range of
employment experience ranging from office
work, sales help, factory work, food handling,
home care, and companions to assist the elderly.
If you can help, we can use volunteers on
Mondays & Wednesdays, for just four hours per
day, to assist people in finding suitable jobs. We
Sacred Heart for the intentions of: all parishioners
and their families, that God will bless them this com‐
ing Thanksgiving and always. Requested by the
Respect for Life Committee.
CARING SPIRIT MINISTRY: The Tuesday,
November 21st meeting will be at 2:00PM at
JoAnnʹs house. A physical therapist, Dan
Marma, will be speaking about lower back

On Tuesday, December 12th, the group will
be going to Milleridge Inn for lunch and to walk

After almost twenty years in Social Ministry,
the last twelve here as St. Martin of Tours
Social Ministry Director, the time has come
for me to move on to the next part of my life’s
journey. It has been an honor to serve the
people of our greater parish community. I
cannot express the gratitude for all of the
support I have received over the years from
staff, parishioners, locals, and especially the
dedicated volunteers I have had the privilege
to serve with. I hope I have made a positive
difference in people’s lives and that I was able
to be an instrument of God’s love in this
complicated world, whether to the single
mother, unemployed veteran, homeless
person, the critically ill, victim of a storm, or
the countless others who have found
themselves in need of compassion. I pray that
the parish and larger Amityville community
will continue to support the many programs
of Social Ministry: Outreach, Employment
Ministry, Citizenship Program, Cloak Room
Thrift Store, Blood Drives, Holiday Ministry,
& Social Justice. I wish many blessings on my
successor knowing the volunteers, the true
angels among us, will do their very best to
ensure a smooth transition. Please keep me in
your prayers as I begin a new adventure.

St. Martin of Tours
(Feast day ‐ November 11th)
Bishop; born at Sabaria (today Steinamanger in German, or Szombathely in Hungarian),
Pannonia (Hungary), about 316; died at Candes, Touraine, most probably in 397. In his early
years, when his father, a military tribune, was transferred to Pavia in Italy, Martin accompanied
him, and when he reached adolescence was, in accordance with the recruiting laws, enrolled in
the Roman army. Touched by grace at an early age, he was from the first attracted towards
Christianity, which had been in favour in the camps since the conversion of Emperor
Constantine. His regiment was soon sent to Amiens in Gaul, and this town became the scene of
the celebrated legend of the cloak. At the gates of the city, one very cold day, Martin met a
shivering and half‐naked beggar. Moved with compassion, he divided his coat into two parts
and gave one to the poor man. The part kept by himself became the famous relic preserved in the
oratory of the Frankish kings under the name of ʺSt. Martinʹs cloakʺ. Martin, who was still only a
catechumen, soon received baptism, and was a little later finally freed from military service at
Worms on the Rhine. As soon as he was free, he hastened to set out to Poitiers to enroll himself
among the disciples of St. Hilary, the wise and pious bishop whose reputation as a theologian
was already passing beyond the frontiers of Gaul.
In 361, he obtained permission to embrace the solitary life that he had adopted in Gallinaria. His
example was soon followed, and a great number of monks gathered around him. Thus was
formed the celebrated Benedictine Abbey of Ligug. Martin remained about ten years in this
solitude, but often left it to preach the Gospel in the central and western parts of Gaul, where the
rural inhabitants were still plunged in the darkness of idolatry and given up to all sorts of gross
superstitions. The memory of these apostolic journeys survives to our day in the numerous local
legends of which Martin is the hero and which indicate roughly the routes that he followed.
Martin became Bishop of the Church of Tours, consecrated on 4 July. He did not change his way
of life: fleeing from the distractions of the large city, he settled himself in a small cell at a short
distance from Tours, beyond the Loire. Some other hermits joined him there, and thus was
gradually formed a new monastery, named, Marmoutier, which it has kept to our own day.
Thus, to an untiring zeal Martin added the greatest simplicity, and it is this which explains how
his pastoral administration so admirably succeeded in sowing Christianity throughout Touraine.
After a last visit to Rome, Martin went to Candes, one of the religious centers created by him in
his diocese, when he was attacked by the illness which ended his life. Ordering himself to be
carried into the presbytery of the church, he died there in 400 (according to some authorities,
more probably in 397) at the age of about 81, evincing until the last that exemplary spirit of
humility and mortification which he had ever shown. The Church of France has always
considered Martin one of her greatest saints, and hagiographers have recorded a great number of
miracles due to his intercession while he was living and after his death.
