Dear Parishioners,
The Parish Share Program has a long history in the Diocese of Pittsburgh. Established many years ago, its purpose has always been to ask the help of individual parishes to assist in the funding of diocesan programs. These would include administrative costs associated with the day-to-day operation of the diocese; outreach to the poor through Catholic Charities; the education of youth in parochial schools and Faith Formation programs; and the support of seminarians and retired priests.
The PSP serves as a reminder that our theological understanding of Church extends beyond a particular local church building or parish community. For that matter, it is obviously bigger than a single diocese. The Catholic Church is universal. It encompasses all people in every place.
The Parish Share Program for 2021 will begin on the Sunday before Ash Wednesday. Preparations are underway and will soon include a letter from me and a pledge card mailed to the registered households in each of the four parishes in the Lower Allegheny Valley. It is my strongest hope that every parishioner will choose to participate and make a sacrificial gift, which will enable all four of our parishes to reach their assessed goal.

of the Lower Allegheny Valley grouping of parishes an important step forward this week. A ZOOM meeting was held with diocesan officials on Thursday, January 21ST. Included in that meeting were Father Dale DeNinno, the Pastor/Administrator of the LAV; Lori McKinniss, overseeing the eventual merging of all the finances of the four parishes; and Debbie VanDemark, the designated PDS Conversion Administrator. Her task will be to coordinate the work of the Parish Data System in bringing together into one operation the information that the four individual parishes currently have on each registered household of parishioners.
These diocesan ZOOM meetings will be held every other week for the next several months as more and more details are addressed. In addition, an on-line parish assembly will be created whereby pertinent information will be shared with parishioners at-large. Its availability will be communicated at the suitable time.
Your prayerful support of this undertaking is much needed and appreciated. Many parish groupings throughout the Diocese of Pittsburgh have already accomplished what we are now working towards. Please ask the Holy Spirit to lead and guide this momentous task.

Enrich your faith with an online Bible study for the new year! As we begin a new year with things in even greater flux than usual, and as we look forward to our new parish community officially forming, it seems appropriate to stop and reflect upon our calling. What does God ask of us now? Who does God call us to be? In “Moses, Called and Equipped,” we will reflect upon the call of Moses as a model for our own calling. We will meet online on three Monday evenings, January 25 and February 1 and 8, from 7:30 to 8:45pm.

The study is meant to be reflective, but low-key and relaxed. There is no expectation that you do “homework” ahead of time unless you wish to. We hope you can join us!
The High Hopes For Haiti Foundation has sent thanks to the LAV for the generous Advent Giving Tree contributions to help educate the students at The Good Samaritan School in Saint Marc, Haiti. This year the school has 179 students in preschool, 549 students in grades kindergarten to sixth grade, and supports 178 students who have gone on to high school. Dr. Mortel, who started the school, believes education is going to be the answer for Haiti’s problems. The LAV Hope for Haiti Committee is able to support 10 students thanks to the contributions from our fellow parishioners.
The RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) is the process by which adults and older children enter the Catholic Church. On Sunday at Saint Scholastica Church, Jason Ewing participated in the Rite of Acceptance into the Order of Catechumens. This means that, after an initial period of inquiry, he has moved into a formal relationship with the Catholic Church and our parish communities as he prepares to be baptized as a Catholic Christian. He now enters the second stage, the Catechumenate, an apprenticeship in Christian living. Jason will look to you, the members of our parishes, as models as he participates with us in worship, faith-sharing, service, and other community activities. We are also working with other inquirers. Please pray for them and Jason as they undertake the next steps in their journey to Christ!
2021 March for Life: This year ’s annual rally will take place virtually. We will invite a small group of pro-life leaders from across the country to march in Washington, DC this year. These leaders will represent pro-life Americans everywhere who, each in their own unique ways, work to make abortion unthinkable and build a culture where every human life is valued and protected. We invite you to join us to watch the March for Life online by RSVPing at https://marchforlife.org/2021-virtual-events/. You will receive an email on January 29 with a code to watch the March and hear the speakers. The St. Scholastica bus to the March has been canceled. We encourage all parishioners to watch the March virtually.

As the Bishop of the Diocese of Pittsburgh, Bishop Zubik has the authority to make the final decision. We should know of his decision by the middle of May.

Over the last few months, our 2nd grade students have been preparing to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation. At the end of January they will complete their preparation at a reconciliation retreat and then receive the sacrament. Please keep them and their families in your prayers as they take this next step in their faith journey.
Next weekend kicks off Catholic Schools Week at CDTCA! This is an opportunity for our students to celebrate our school and Catholic education. Our Open House is next Saturday, January 30 from 2 - 4pm. We will be accepting registrations for Pre-School through 8th grade. Reservations are required and can be made on our website: www.cdtca.org. There is also a virtual tour available. Now is the time to check out CDTCA and discover the Catholic School difference!

The LAV parishes provide a hot meal for the women’s shelter at Bethlehem Haven on the first Sunday of each month and the men’s shelter at Community House on the fourth Saturday of each month. For details on how you can participate in this ministry, go to lavcatholic.org/homeless-ministry.
The Aspinwall Homeless Ministry is not cur rently accepting donations of clothing. However, they are very much in need of non-perishable food items such as soups, (both condensed and ready-to-serve), jelly, and powdered or shelf-stable milk. Please leave donations in plastic bags in the gray bins at the Saint Scholastica church entrance.
Donations of Giant Eagle gift cards are gratefully accepted. They can be brought to the Saint Scholastica parish office.

Clothing Donations: At this time, the St. Vincent DePaul Society is not accepting donations at the clothing collection bin in the back parking lot of Saint Francis Church.
Remember to check those expiration dates! All of our local charities greatly appreciate your donations of non-perishable foods. Before you donate, please take a moment to check the expiration dates. Charities cannot accept expired food items.
The St. Vincent DePaul Society Sharpsburg Food Pantry would like to thank the members of all the parishes for their thoughtfulness and generosity in giving $7,005 to the Advent Giving Tree. Promise 6: “The feeling of uselessness and self-pity will disappear”
Poor me, poor, poor me! Nothing is as tiresome as someone wrapped in the garment of self-pity. They make themselves the center of their life. Everything revolves around their sense of victimization.
Unfortunately, this is often the case, not just for the addict/alcoholic, but also for some who are in recovery. They have become so used to being the victim of their own drama that they don’t know how not to be the victim.
Self-pity and shame are similar. They tell the sufferer you do not deserve recovery; you have done so much damage, you are so worthless that you need to suffer. This lie is truly the devil at work. This toxic lie destroys not only the possibility of recovery, but even the desire, the hope of recovery. Self-pity can destroy hope.
The feelings of uselessness is the child of self-pity. Self-pity focuses our attention on our brokenness, perhaps not just our failure with recovery, but our failure in life, emphasizing our inability to live life.
Our addiction feeds into this lie, imprisons us in a world of darkness where we come to believe that we are so broken, we can never get sober and are probably not worth it. We surrender to our addiction.
But this promise reminds us that gratitude, not self-pity, is the path to recovery. Yes, we are broken. We have all done terrible things; and yes, we are responsible for the carnage we have caused. But where there is sin, there also is grace. We are all created in the image and likeness of God, who loves us unconditionally. God is with us in our success, in our failure, and in our hope, in our addiction and in our recovery. God is with us.
The hope and the promise is to embrace God’s presence in your life. Be humble enough to accept God’s grace and gift. Turn your heart from self-pity to gratitude. From uselessness to service. Learn to live with an attitude of gratitude.
Next week as we look at Promise 7, we will begin to embrace the work of recovery.

The Nicene Creed
I believe in one God, the Father almighty,
maker of heaven and earth, of all things
visible and invisible.
I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only
Begotten Son of God, born of the Father
before all ages. God from God, Light from
Light, true God from true God, begotten, not
made, consubstantial with the Father; through
him all things were made. For us men and for
our salvation he came down from heaven,
[Bow] and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate
of the Virgin Mary, and became man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius
Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and
rose again on the third day in accordance with
the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is
seated at the right hand of the Father. He will
come again in glory to judge the living and
the dead and his kingdom will have no end.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver
of life, who proceeds from the Father and the
Son, who with the Father and the Son is
adored and glorified, who has spoken through
the prophets.
I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic
Church. I confess one Baptism for the
forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the
resurrection of the dead and the life of the
world to come.

The Gloria
Glory to God in the highest, and on earth
peace to people of good will.
We praise you, we bless you, we adore you,
we glorify you, we give you thanks for your
great glory, Lord God, heavenly King, O God
almighty Father.
Lord Jesus Christ, Only-begotten Son, Lord
God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you
take away the sins of the world, have mercy
on us. You take away the sins of the world,
receive our prayer. You are seated at the right
hand of the Father, have mercy on us.
For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are
the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus
Christ, with the Holy Spirit in the glory of
God the Father.

First Reading: Jonah 3:1-5, 10
The word of the LORD came to Jonah, saying:
“Set out for the great city of Nineveh,
and announce to it the message that I will tell you.”
So Jonah made ready and went to Nineveh,
according to the LORD’S bidding.
Now Nineveh was an enormously large city;
it took three days to go through it.
Jonah began his journey through the city,
and had gone but a single day’s walk announcing,
“Forty days more and Nineveh shall be destroyed,”
when the people of Nineveh believed God;
they proclaimed a fast
and all of them, great and small, put on sackcloth.
When God saw by their actions how they turned from their evil way,
he repented of the evil that he had threatened to do to them;
he did not carry it out.

Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 7:29-31
I tell you, brothers and sisters, the time is running out.
From now on, let those having wives act as not having them,
those weeping as not weeping,
those rejoicing as not rejoicing,
those buying as not owning,
those using the world as not using it fully.
For the world in its present form is passing away.
Gospel: Mark 1:14-20
After John had been arrested, Jesus came to Galilee proclaiming the
gospel of God: “This is the time of fulfillment. The kingdom of God is at
hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.”
As he passed by the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother
Andrew casting their nets into the sea; they were fishermen. Jesus said to
them, “Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.” Then they
abandoned their nets and followed him. He walked along a little farther
and saw James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John. They too were
in a boat mending their nets. Then he called them. So they left their
father Zebedee in the boat along with the hired men and followed him.
