  • Dear Parishioners,

“See, darkness covers the earth, and thick clouds cover the peoples; but upon you the Lord shines, and over you appears his glory” (Isaiah 60:2). These words were addressed to the Hebrew people following their exile in Babylon. The message of the prophet Isaiah was one of hope and looking forward as they returned to their homeland. Where once they knew the darkness of living in an unfamiliar place, now their way was lighted by the glory of the Lord showing them a new way.

The year 2020 led the world’s population into an exile of sorts. Everything comfortable and familiar was turned upside down. We were quarantined, separated, cut-off from routines, faces covered with masks. It was as though darkness covered the earth and thick clouds covered the peoples and we named it COVID-19. But the same 2020 ended on a note of hopeful expectation with the arrival of an anti-coronavirus vaccine.

Again, making the words of Isaiah the prophet our own: “Then you shall be radiant at what you see, your heart shall throb and overflow . . .” (Isaiah 60:5). What do we long to see? What will cause our hearts to throb? The day when we can return to “normal.” Children and young people in the classroom; restaurants open for business; food lines diminished; churches fully open for robust worship; an economy strong; hospitals not overwhelmed.

When the Wise Men of the Epiphany gospel set out on their journey in search of the newborn king of the Jews there was uncertainty. They were unsure as they moved into the unknown. Their only certainty was the star they saw at its rising. Thus, compelled by determination and courage they moved forward in their diligent search. And in time they came upon the Christ-Child, because they kept their eyes fixed on the star guiding them.

My dear brothers and sisters, 2021 begins with a renewed determination that this year will be better than the last. We will do all that we must in order to give new direction to our lives. We will be wise in the way of the Magi, keeping our eyes fixed on the Star who is Jesus Christ.

May God bless our journey in the days and weeks that lie ahead.

    Holy Hour and Benediction

Consider a different way to spend an hour of your life. You are invited to join us for our monthly Holy Hour and Benediction which will be held on Thursday, January 7TH, from 6:30 to 7:30 pm in Saint Edward Church.

Come before our Eucharistic Lord and pray in adoration, contrition, thanksgiving and supplication. This is an hour of your life that is better than anything else that might occupy your time. Let it be an hour of fruitful waiting, listening to the sound of silence.

  • Second Collection for the Saint Anthony School Program and the DePaul School for Hearing and Speech

Every year the Catholic faithful in the Diocese of Pittsburgh are asked to show their financial support for two very important programs that help young people with special educational needs.

The Saint Anthony Program offers an inclusive education to children ages 5-21 years with special needs and the DePaul School for Hearing and Speech teaches children, birth to 14 years, who are deaf or hard of hearing to listen, speak and learn. Both programs empower students to become active and contributing members of their respective communities.

This second collection will be taken the weekend of January 16-17. Any help you can give is deeply appreciated and makes a tremendous impact on the students who are served. Thank you very much for the generosity of your support.

Parish Calendar for 2021: Thanks to the generous support of our local funeral homes, the parish calendar is available for distribution. Please take one for your yourself and other family member, neighbors or friends. Our gratitude for the sponsorship of Smith Funeral Home in Blawnox, Weddell-Ajak Funeral Home in Aspinwall and Worrell Funeral Home in Sharpsburg. They serve our communities and the Lower Allegheny Valley grouping of parishes with compassionate and professional service.

Enrich your faith with an online Bible study for the new year! As we begin a new year with things in even greater flux than usual, and as we look forward to our new parish community officially forming, it seems appropriate to stop and reflect upon our calling. What does God ask of us now? Who does God call us to be? In “Moses, Called and Equipped,” we will reflect upon the call of Moses as a model for our own calling. We will meet online on three Monday evenings, January 25 and February 1 and 8, from 7:30 to 8:45pm.

If you would like to participate, please contact Andrew Bechman by e-mail at: [email protected]. You can order the text online as a booklet or as an eBook. The study is meant to be reflective, but low-key and relaxed. There is no expectation that you do “homework” ahead of time unless you wish to. We hope you can join us!

THANK YOU SHELTER VOLUNTEERS! A big THANK YOU to everyone who cooked, purchased or delivered the homeless shelter meals this year! Your kindness and generosity was so greatly appreciated. God Bless you! A Message from the Music Ministry Staff: A very merry Christmas and Blessed New Year to all. Thank you to our cantors, choirs and instrumentalists for your dedication throughout the year. Thanks to our congregations for your patience during this time, as we pray and sing through masks, while we gather in church at safe distances. May the coming new year bless you with health, happiness, peace and love! Haiti Highlight: For over 10 years, Saint Scholastica Parish has sponsored schoolchildren through the Mortel High Hopes for Haiti Foundation. Thank you for your generous support over the years! Over the holidays, consider learning more about the founder, Dr. Rodrigue Mortel. Dr. Mortel's recent book, Go and Do the Same, describes his journey of growing up in Haiti, his education, and his focus on returning to his homeland to build schools and develop educational programs for the Haitian children. Through his work as a physician, a minister and a philanthropist, The High Hopes of Haiti Foundation continues to help the Haitian people become educated and develop their country in positive ways. Go and Do the Same shows how the Gospel comes alive. Read it and be inspired to enrich the world in large and small ways. Learn about the Haitian culture through the photographs and moving testimonials of each student's incredible journey of education and willingness to enrich his/her native country. • The Nicene Creed

I believe in one God, the Father almighty,

maker of heaven and earth, of all things

    visible and invisible.

I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only

Begotten Son of God, born of the Father

before all ages. God from God, Light from

Light, true God from true God, begotten, not

made, consubstantial with the Father; through

him all things were made. For us men and for

our salvation he came down from heaven,

[Bow] and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate

of the Virgin Mary, and became man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius

Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and

rose again on the third day in accordance with

the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is

seated at the right hand of the Father. He will

come again in glory to judge the living and

the dead and his kingdom will have no end.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver

of life, who proceeds from the Father and the

Son, who with the Father and the Son is

adored and glorified, who has spoken through

    the prophets.

I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic

Church. I confess one Baptism for the

forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the

resurrection of the dead and the life of the

    world to come.

    Amen.

    The Gloria

Glory to God in the highest, and on earth

peace to people of good will.

We praise you, we bless you, we adore you,

we glorify you, we give you thanks for your

great glory, Lord God, heavenly King, O God

    almighty Father.

Lord Jesus Christ, Only-begotten Son, Lord

God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you

take away the sins of the world, have mercy

on us. You take away the sins of the world,

receive our prayer. You are seated at the right

hand of the Father, have mercy on us.

For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are

the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus

Christ, with the Holy Spirit in the glory of

    God the Father.

    Amen.

    First Reading: Isaiah 60:1-6

Rise up in splendor, Jerusalem! Your light has come,

the glory of the Lord shines upon you.

    See, darkness covers the earth,

    and thick clouds cover the peoples;

but upon you the LORD shines,

and over you appears his glory.

Nations shall walk by your light,

and kings by your shining radiance.

    Raise your eyes and look about;

they all gather and come to you:

    your sons come from afar,

and your daughters in the arms of their nurses.

Then you shall be radiant at what you see,

your heart shall throb and overflow,

for the riches of the sea shall be emptied out before you,

the wealth of nations shall be brought to you.

Caravans of camels shall fill you,

    dromedaries from Midian and Ephah;

    all from Sheba shall come

    bearing gold and frankincense,

and proclaiming the praises of the LORD.

    Responsorial Psalm

Lord, every nation on earth will adore you.

    Second Reading: Ephesians 3:2-3a, 5-6

    Brothers and sisters:

You have heard of the stewardship of God's grace that was given to me for

your benefit, namely, that the mystery was made known to me by revelation. It

was not made known to people in other generations as it has now been

revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit: that the Gentiles are

coheirs, members of the same body, and copartners in the promise in Christ

    Jesus through the gospel.

    Gospel: Matthew 2:1-12

When Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, in the days of King Herod,

behold, magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem, saying, “Where is the

newborn king of the Jews? We saw his star at its rising and have come to do

    him homage.”

When King Herod heard this, he was greatly troubled, and all Jerusalem with

him. Assembling all the chief priests and the scribes of the people, He inquired

of them where the Christ was to be born. They said to him, “In Bethlehem of

Judea, for thus it has been written through the prophet: And you, Bethlehem,

land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; since from

you shall come a ruler, who is to shepherd my people Israel.”

Then Herod called the magi secretly and ascertained from them the time of the

star's appearance. He sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search

diligently for the child. When you have found him, bring me word, that I too

may go and do him homage.”

After their audience with the king they set out. And behold, the star that they

had seen at its rising preceded them, until it came and stopped over the place

where the child was. They were overjoyed at seeing the star, and on entering

the house they saw the child with Mary his mother. They prostrated

themselves and did him homage. Then they opened their treasures and offered

him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. And having been warned in a

dream not to return to Herod, they departed for their country by another way.
