THE TRANSFIGURATION OF THE LORD EYEWITNESSES

Today, the Feast of the Transfigura on of the Lord, is a day of eyewitness accounts. The first, a vision reported by the prophet Daniel, was well known to Jesus and his apostles. The vision account was wri en in quite mys cal and figura ve language. It is a vision of heaven, powerful and memorable. There are flames of fire, burning wheels, the Ancient One, and a Son of Man. Clearly, Daniel saw something. But was it a dream? Was it real? Was it merely a clever myth?

Peter wants no such confusion about his vision! We are told in Ma hew’s Gospel what he and his friends James and John saw when they went up on the mountain with Jesus one day. Jesus warned the three witnesses to tell no one un l “the Son of Man has been raised from the dead” (Ma hew 17:9). Lest readers of one of the Gospels discount the story or simply write it off as a pious myth, Peter gives his own account of the Transfigura on of Jesus in his second le er to the church. He writes with authority, as an eyewitness. He reports this message from God concerning Jesus: “This is my Son, my beloved, with whom I am well pleased,” and he assures us that the message is “altogether reliable” (2 Peter 1:17, 19). Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ:

The Church in Africa has a rich and long history going back to the first century. Many of us are very familiar with the names of the African saints: Augus ne of Hippo, Mark the Evangelist, Clement of Alexandria, Perpetua, Felicity and Catherine of Alexandria. Africa con nues to bless the world with beau ful examples of the faith, especially by way of modern day saints like: Charles Lwanga, Josephine Bakhita, Daniel Comboni and Charles de Foucauld.

The Church in La n America and the Caribbean forms one of the modern day and missionary aspects of the Catholic Church. Compared to the long history of the Church in the Middle East, Europe and Africa, the La n American/Caribbean Church is barely 500 years old. From Saint Rose of the Lima, the first person born in the Americas to be canonized a saint, to Blessed Oscar Romero, the Church in La n America shines through the vibrant faith of the people.

On August 12 and 13 our Diocese will have a special collec on for the Church in La n America, the Caribbean and Africa. We join in our support of both the ancient church as well as a modern, missionary church. In many ways the parish is the one enduring and stable ins tu on in many of the villages and towns of Africa, the Caribbean and La n America. Your financial support allows these parishes to effec vely minister to all in the community.

With gra tude for your con nued generosity and every prayerful wish, I am Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend Gerald M. Barbarito Bishop of Palm Beach

OUR LADY OF PERPETUAL HELP– All are invited to join us every Monday, to pray the Novena to Our Lady of Perpetual Help, immediately following the 8 AM Mass.
