F isch–ing Lines by Deacon Howard Fischer

Today’s second reading from the Letter of St. James is one of my favorite Scripture passages. To paraphrase, James

says: “If a member of the community doesn’t have enough to eat or doesn’t have sufficient clothes to wear and all you do is say, ‘I hope things turn around for you soon! I’ll be thinking of you and keeping you in my prayers!’ but you don’t do any-thing concrete to help them with their hardship, what good is that? Such a faith is useless and dead.”

To be clear, James does not imply that we shouldn’t offer encour-agement to others or pray for them. Rather, his point is that a true Christian faith radiates itself via concrete acts of charity; it goes beyond mere sentiment and words. Many of us, myself included, are often guilty of uttering nice words and having good intentions but then only infrequently venturing into the hard, messy, time-consuming world of actually DOING something. James is telling us that simply offering “thoughts and prayers” in the face of people’s suffering and in response to the world’s problems is not sufficient. A living faith isn’t confined to one’s cranium or lips; it pours forth in a torrent of concrete action. Consider the following Facebook post that I came across a few years ago:

I was hungry and you formed a humanities club and discussed my hunger. I was imprisoned and you crept off quietly to your chapel and prayed for my release. I was naked and in your mind you debated the morality of my ap-pearance. I was sick and you knelt and thanked God for your health. I was homeless and you preached to me of the spiritual shelter of the love of God. I was lonely and you left me alone to go and pray for me. You seem so holy, so close to God. But I’m still very hungry and lonely and cold. (Author unknown)

The inter-relationship of faith and works in the Christian under-standing of Salvation has always been a thorny one, not because the connection is hard to understand but because it is so easy to distort. Indeed distortions of this doctrine on both sides were a major cause of the division of the Church in the Protestant Refor-mation. First, we must never forget (or dilute) the fact that Salva-tion is totally and completely a gift from God. There is absolutely NOTHING that you and I can do to earn it. All we can do is accept it or reject it. Salvation is accepted by faith – by placing our com-plete love and trust in God and his promises. Too often we think of faith as being the intellectual acknowledgement of certain truths about God. Or we make Salvation a prize we earn by notching enough “Brownie points” for doing good deeds. Both of these ap-proaches are completely wrong.

As St. James teaches, real faith is not merely a mental response to the Gospel (such as accepting the Nicene Creed). Rather, real faith is the response of our entire beings: thoughts, hearts, words, and actions. It is something that must be lived completely and continuously with nothing held back. True faith requires a re-sponse of service and sacrifice. It is how we really answer the question Jesus puts to the Apostles today: “And who do you say that I am?”

Having surrendered to God and grateful for all he has given us, a

living faith channels God’s love into the world through actions. True faith is heart and head and hands together. We need prayer and action. This is a “both-and,” not an “either-or.” Anything less is stunted, lifeless and hollow.

So what about you and me? Do we go beyond expressions of good wishes? Do we limit our efforts to a few prayers and an oc-casional donation of surplus funds to charity? Or do we get our hands dirty by concretely alleviating the suffering of the hungry, the lonely, the homeless, the sick? What are we holding back from the Lord?

May you and I demonstrate a living faith from our works and in so doing magnify the love and compassion of God in a world that so desperately needs it. And may this weekend’s sad remembrance of 9/11 lead us to not only pray for the victims of violence and terrorism, both past and present, but also compel us to concretely demonstrate the love of God triumphing over hate and vengeance. Study and Reflect on the

Sunday Readings!

As followers of Jesus, we want to understand Scripture in a way that applies to our life oday. The Christian practice of lectio divina is a way of ap-proaching the Bible that helps Scripture to come alive. The Lectio Divina Bible Study Groups use a variety of re-sources to explore and discuss

the readings for the upcoming Sunday. Through reading, reflecting and praying, readers trust that God will speak through Scripture when open to its message.

Find new ways to apply the Word of God to daily life and become more effective witnesses to Christ. A richly rewarding way to study the Word of God.

Lectio Divina PM Group Monday evenings from 6:30– 8:00 p.m.

Tuesday afternoon 2:00 – 3:15 p.m. (Due to the current health crisis, sessions are currently being con-

ducted via Zoom)

To join a group or for more information email [email protected] or call the parish office 847-223-0010.

PLEASE PRAY FOR THE SICK: As members of St. Mary’s parish faith community, it is our responsibility to remember both in concrete and spiritual ways those who cannot celebrate Mass with us each week because they are ill. May the God of compassion hold us in the palm of His hand when we feel weary and alone in our suffering. May ours be the look of compassion and the touch of comfort to those who reach out to us in their time of need. And may the blessing of compassion be with us all. P. Celebrate the Season of Creation The Season of Creation is a month-long prayerful ob-servance that calls upon Catholics to pray and care for God's Creation. It starts in September and ends on the feast of St. Francis, October 4th. It's a time to reflect on our rela-tionship with the environment, how we live, and how our lifestyles impact the natural world, humans and other crea-ture inhabiting it. This “time for creation” offers, in the words of Pope Francis, “individual believers and communities a fitting opportunity to reaffirm their person-al vocation to be stewards of creation, to thank God for the wonderful handiwork which he has entrusted to our care, and to implore his help for the protection of creation...". The US Conference of Catholic Bishops reminds us that “we show our respect for the Creator by our stewardship of Creation”. Pope Francis urges us to recognize our connectedness with the natural world saying, "Nature cannot be regarded as something separate from ourselves or as a mere setting in which we live. We are part of nature, included in it and thus in constant interaction with it." (LS 139). Advocating for Creation Care helps safeguard the inheritance the Creator has given us, ... an inheritance essential to our well-being. Pope Benedict XVI told us that protecting this inheritance is a way of fulfilling our role as stewards of Creation.
