Stewardship: A Way of Life

The Presentation of the Lord

“...they took him up to Jerusalem to present him to

the Lord…” Luke 2:22

How seriously do you take being a Catholic? Is “being Catholic” something I just do when I attend Sunday Mass or attend one of my parish functions? It’s easy to be Catholic then, it’s harder to be Catholic when I am out in the world. Would someone recognize you as a Catholic by the way you act, dress and talk? How do you present yourself to the Lord and to others?

Please keep these parishioners and family members in your prayers:

Pray for the Sick

WORD OF LIFE: “When parents say ‘yes’ to life for their child, they are saying ‘yes’ to the most loving and healing path for all involved. When God invites us to draw close to him by following his commandments (Jn 14:15), he does so because he wants what is best for us. By saying ‘yet’ to life for their child, which is morally good and right, parents are placing their trust in God and embracing their child and the life their child has been given for as long as it is given.”

Pride, envy, anger, sloth, greed, gluttony and lust: these “seven deadly sins”

are patterns of dysfunction that keep us separated from God and ultimately

lead to unhappiness. Join us as we embark on Fr. Robert Barron’s explora-

tion of these seven sinful patterns and also learn how practicing countervail-

ing virtues can break the cycle of sin.

On February 2 through March 22, immediately following 8:30 a.m. Mass at

St. Mary in the Ark Library, we will begin the Seven Deadly Sins and Seven

Lively Virtues program. This 8 session study is appropriate for teenagers and

adults. Cost is $15 for the study guide. Scholarships are available.

To find out more information, please contact Vicki Kersten at 868-3337 or

stop by the parish office to sign up.

A Note from Our Pastor ...

+St. Mary’s is considering significant changes to the

building complex, in particular the parish offices and

the parish center, which are south and north of the

church, respectively. The church is fine, and we have

no plans for change on that part of the building. The offices are the old

rectory, and they have structural weaknesses and are not well suited for

use by parish staff. The center also has structural problems as well as

ailing heating and cooling systems. The center has been used for faith

formation, but there are challenges with conducting classes there. We

are currently looking at a report from architectural company PRA and

their recommendations, including the pastoral council, finance council,

and capital improvement committee in the discussions. I am pleased so

far by everyone’s grasping of the importance of this matter. There are

many things to consider, so please pray with us for God’s guidance.

+Bishop Hying is moving our diocese and each parish to undertake an

evangelization initiative (see his columns in the Catholic Herald Nov 28,

Dec 12, 19). As St. Joseph’s and St. Mary’s prepares to participate in this

endeavor, the pastoral council and finance council will be discussing

the book “Forming Intentional Disciples” by Sherry Weddell (2012, Our

Sunday Visitor Press). This will give everyone some common reference

points as we go forward. If anyone else would like to buy a copy of that

book for $12, please inform me or the business administrators at our two

churches by Feb 17. We will order one for you.

+St. Joseph’s has a scheduled time for confessions right after the

Saturday Mass, starting at 7:05 and continuing until everyone has

gone. Starting this weekend I will change the location to the north

confession booth in the church. I ask that you use only the room on the

right-hand side.

+This week we have Eucharistic Adoration at both churches: St. Mary on

Wednesday, and St. Joseph on Friday (first Wednesday at the former, first

Page 13: Saint Mary of the Immaculate ... - stjoeedgerton.org€¦ · 01.02.2020  · Saint Mary of the Immaculate Conception & St. Joseph Catholic Church The Presentation of the Lord February

MEN!! MARK YOUR CALENDARS ………….. FEBRUARY 7: Bishop Donald J. Hying, Bishop of the Diocese of Madison will be coming to St. Mary of Pine Bluff to launch the “St. Joseph Strong” challenge, calling all men to enter into the 33 Day Consecration to St. Joseph (February 16–March 19, Feast of St. Joseph). All men who attend will receive (FREE) Fr. Calloway’s book, CONSECRATION TO ST. JOSEPH, along with a (FREE)

“ST. JOSEPH STRONG” CHALLENGE COIN. • 6:00 p.m. – Adoration, Confessions,

Solemn Vespers (led by the Knights of Divine Mercy Schola Cantorum)

• 7:00 p.m. – Bishop Hying’s inspirational talk on “Calling Men to Be St. Joseph Strong”

• 7:45 p.m. – Chanted Chaplet of Divine Mercy, Benediction

• 8:15 p.m. – Fraternal Social with Bishop Hying in St. Mary’s gym

Friday at the latter). It runs for one hour after the morning Mass. We

follow the order on the inside back cover of the missalette. At St. Joseph

we pray the Litany to the Sacred Heart, with booklets, at the start. The

hour ends with Benediction (10:00 at St. Mary, 9:30 at St. Joseph). In this

hour of silence, I encourage us to adore the Lord, who is really present

with us in the Eucharist. I also encourage us to pray for God’s blessing on

our evangelization initiative, which will start later this year. It will really

help us to start praying for it now.

+This weekend I invite everyone who is interested to receive the blessing

of the throat after Mass. We will line up as we do at Communion. We do

this on the weekend closest to the feast day of St. Blasé (Bishop in Asia

Minor, modern-day Turkey, martyred around 315). Blasé was able to

save the life of a child who was choking on a bone, and so he has

special intercession for throat conditions.
