JUNE 5, 2016 - TENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

I give thanks to God for the gift of the Sacrament of Confirmation. This past Thursday evening, Bishop Joseph Tyson from Yakima confirmed teens and adults from both St. Michael Parish and the parishes of Lewis County. Fr. Maurer, their pastor, was also present along with sponsors, parents and families. It was a wonderful moment of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. I thank all of the catechists, the Life Teen Core Team, Elizabeth Lyons, the Life Teen Band, Michelle Clinton and all the other sta¦ and volunteers who assisted in any way for their talent and e¦orts to make this holy moment possible.

An invitation from the Building Committee: This coming Tuesday, June 7 at 1PM after the noon Mass, the Building Committee invites your input on plans they have been working on for renovations of the Downtown Church and Gathering Space. Hearing from you will be important. Please join us for noon Mass if you are able. You may wish to bring a light lunch. The Prime Timers will be having a potluck lunch. We will begin the presentation about 1:30PM in the church.

An invitation from your Pastoral Council: All parish leadership and parishioners are invited on either Wednesday, June 8 from 7-9PM or Saturday, June 11 from 10AM-12PM in the Parish Center Multipurpose Room to hear a pre-sentation about the Strategic Planning Process and the results of the input and distillation of information received from leadership and parishioners. Come to hear, learn and become excited about the future of our parish and the strategic initiatives that we pray will lead us into a future full of hope, growth and evangelization for the Kingdom of God. See you there.

An invitation from your Parish School: This Friday, June 10 we are celebrating the achievements of our 8th Grade Graduates. We join with graduates and their parents and families together with the entire school student body and sta¦ for Mass at 9AM to give thanks to God for all that they have experienced, learned and achieved throughout their time here at St. Michael Catholic School.

At. 7PM they all will gather for their Graduation Ceremony in the church. Please know that you are all most welcome to come and honor their outstanding achievements.

Together with their principal Connor Geraghty, I personally invite you to these wonderful events. The gift of St. Michael Parish School is amazing. These children have been nurtured in a faith-filled environment, some for nine years. Their families have supported them. Their teachers have educated, formed, guided, challenged and uplifted them with all the skill, talents and faith that make them such outstanding educators. In so many ways, these graduates are our children as well. As a parish community we have dedicated our time, talent and treasure to their lives. They are the fruits of so much labor and love. It is a joy to send them forth with blessings and prayers, rightly proud of all they have accomplished and looking forward to all that they will achieve as disciples of Jesus Christ.

Please pray for seminarian Je¦rey Moore, who will be ordained to the transitional diaconate on June 18 at 11AM at St. Bernadette Parish, 1028 SW 128 St., Seattle, WA. 98146. Please know that you are most welcome to join in this wonderful celebration.

Please pray for Fr. Charles. He is taking a well-deserved vacation and returns June 18. His final weekends will be June18/19 at the Westside and June26 Downtown. We will have Spiritual Bouquet cards available for you to o¦er prayers and wishes for him. Please join me in thanking him for his ministry with us this past year. The Archbishop has yet to announce his new assignment.

Thank you for all that you do to make St. Michael Parish such a blessed community of faith. Let us all be mindful and welcoming to visitors throughout the summer. Let us welcome them with open arms and open hearts. We are all ministers of hospitality.

In Christ, I love you,

JUNE 5, 2016 - TENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

The late Msgr. Thomas McGread, pastor of St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Wichita, Kansas for more than 30 years, and is called by some the “Father of Stewardship,” said as he looked back on his experiences supporting and forming stewardship in his people, “The real success of stewardship in our parish is found in the hearts of the people. Without a conversion of heart, no one is able to give of themselves as Christ has asked us to do.”

In today’s Second Reading from St. Paul’s Letter to the Galatians, Paul speaks of his conversion, a change of heart that provided him with the inspiration and the strength to become the apostle and evangelist he was. We are called to conversion by stewardship but it does not have to be as dramatic as Paul’s experience.

Nevertheless, conversion influences us to be good stewards, and living stewardship translates into a lifestyle of service. Msgr. McGread recognized that serving rather than being served could be challenging for people. He said, “Steward-ship is a spiritual way of life and that is never easy, but any-one I have ever known who became committed to being a steward never went back. Once they adopted that way of living, they were in it for the duration, for life.”

We must understand that to be a disciple of Christ, to actually be one of His followers, requires not just conversion, but action, doing something to serve others. There are many opportunities for service right here in our parish and in our communities.

END OF OUR PASTORAL/FISCAL YEAR! JUNE 30, 2016All our families are a blessing to Saint Michael Parish and their financial support makes ministry possible. Our income goal for the past 12 months has been to receive $2.9 million in the Sunday o¦ertory. We are so close! More than 63% of our parishioners have donated $2.7 since last July -- that’s 1,496 families! We have used these funds to support our parish mission and the many ministries of our parish! None of this good work can be done without the support of all 2,338 families in our parish. With everyone’s support we be can a strong Catholic pres-ence in all of Thurston County and respond with mercy to the “least of my brothers”.

You may be looking for a way to make a big di¦erence to help further our mission. If you are age 70½ or older you may also be interested in a way to lower the income and taxes from your IRA withdrawals. An IRA charitable rollover is a way you can help continue our work and benefit St. Michael Parish before June 30 this year.

Benefits of an IRA charitable rollover:

• Avoid taxes on transfers of up to $100,000 from your IRA to our organization• Satisfy your required minimum distribution (RMD) for the year• Reduce your taxable income, even if you do not itemize deductions• Make a gift that is not subject to the 50% deduction limits on charitable gifts• Help further the work and mission of Saint Michael Parish

How an IRA charitable rollover gift works:

• Contact your IRA plan administrator to make a gift from your IRA to us.• Your IRA funds will be directly transferred to St. Michael Parish to help continue

our important work.• Please note that IRA charitable rollover gifts do not qualify for a charitable deduction.

Call Terry Walter at the parish o¬ce if you have any questions about an IRA Charitable Rollover!

LECTORS AND EXTRAORDINARY MINISTERS OF HOLY COMMUNION NEEDEDWould you like to know more about becoming a lector or an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion at Mass? Distributing Communion or proclaiming the Word of God is an opportunity to serve the Body of Christ.

Saturday, June 11, 10 – 11:30AM, Downtown Church and Gathering Space.

We begin with prayer and some theology about the Eucharist and proclaiming the Word, the importance of these ministries for the church, and the practical training you will need to perform in this role. This session will help you discern if this ministry is for you.

To be a lector or an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion in the Seattle Archdiocese, you must be a confirmed Catholic. If married you must have been married by a priest or deacon. At St. Michael Parish we ask that you are part-ners in the mission. This means that you attend Mass weekly and frequent the sacraments, are committed to spiritual growth, contribute financially to the mission and ministries of the parish, and have a sacrificial giving pledge card on file. If you are not already serving in liturgical ministry (Eucharistic Minister, lector, choir member, altar server, or hospitality minister) please call the parish o¬ce at (360) 754- 4667 or email [email protected] to register for this session. It is very important to RSVP!

FPU UPDATE

We are being marketed to every minute of every day with images of people who are so much happier with this gizmo or that gadget that we find ourselves yearning, even needing that item because we think it will make us happier, or thinner or more well-liked. But that rarely works, and we find ourselves repeating the mistake over and over. Try analyzing what is a want and what is a need. Try putting a twenty-four hour delay on major purchases. Try asking yourself, “will what I want now, get in the way of what I want most?”

Financial Peace University is actually a very simple and common sense way of handling personal finances that shows you step-by-step what to do to get out of debt, build for the future and manage your money as a true steward for God.

I had a God moment today as I rushed to the senior center downtown to drop o¦ donations. I hadnt been there for a couple of years and as I wound my way through the parking lot, I encountered the familiar faces of the homeless in Olympia.

I walked toward the entrance and saw a man who looked homeless and hardened. He was wandering toward the entrance at the same time. I purposely reached for a di¦erent door to side step an encounter with him. I was busy, you see, and my day had been disrupted by car repairs and calls from my school kids to come and pick them up. I was relieved to have successfully avoided him.

I finished my business with the senior store upstairs and my mind was on my next errand and how to salvage my day.

Descending the stairs, I noticed lovely piano music playing and thought how nice that someone was playing so skillfully and beautifully for the seniors. I wanted to see who was playing and took a second to turn and look on my way out the door.

It was the homeless man who walked in with me. I stopped and stared at him and listened to his playing. My eyes took in the details of his stained, raggedclothing and his dirty hands that danced lightly across the piano keys.

I exhaled the breath that I hadn’t known I was holding as I realized the beauty of the moment. God had persisted and insisted on my encountering his vulnerable humanity, even though I thought I was too busy and too burdened with my day. And I saw the beauty around me, the gift of this man and the gift of his music.

Thank you Father, for giving me eyes to see You in all of your children.

Isn’t it wonderful how God persists with us?

- Elizabeth E.

Without you, the work of the St. Vincent de Paul Society in Olympia could not happen. Your donations help people to stay in their home and maintain their medical prescriptions. There will be a collection for St. Vincent’s after all Masses next week. Donations can also be delivered directly to St. Vincent’s during o¬ce hours 1-3PM, Monday, Wednesday, Friday. Thank-you for your generous and prayerful support.

PROBLEM SOLVERS NEEDED!People often comment that the tiered landscape walls that run along East-side and 11th Streets are beautiful. It is hard to believe they were constructed almost ten years ago! During those years the walls have been maintained by parishioners who volunteered to care for individual sections. Unlike other land-scape areas on the campus that are mostly flat, the tiered walls require volunteers who are capable of moving up and down the di¦ering levels.

If you enjoy gardening and are agile enough to negotiate multi-level land-scape sections, we invite you to please become a problem solver and join the rich heritage of those who have lovingly maintained our beautiful campus.
