JOHN THE BAPTIST At a school open house a woman could be overheard introducing her husband to some of the other parents. “Oh, Bill, I’d like you to meet Johnny’s father. And over here, this is Marie’s mom; you know, the little girl from our Ellen’s soccer team.” With satisfied resignation Bill introduced himself not by name: “I’m Ellen’s Dad.” It’s good to know who you are. Be it someone’s father or mother, son or daughter, husband or wife, it’s important to embrace the full meaning of our various roles. John the Baptist knows who he is. And who he is not. He is not the Christ. Nor Elijah. Nor like any other prophet God’s people had ever seen. John the Baptist knows his mission is divine. He’s more than satisfied to be the one to announce the coming of God’s reign. The Christ is near. Make straight your paths.

JUAN EL BAUTISTA En una casa abierta de la escuela se escuchó a una mujer presentando a su marido a algunos de los otros padres. “Oh, José, me gustaría que conozcas al padre de Juanito. On this Third Sunday of Advent, called the “Sunday of joy”, the liturgy invites us to welcome the spirit with which all this happens, that is, precisely, joy. Saint Paul invites us to prepare for the coming of the Lord, by assum-ing three attitudes. Listen carefully: three attitudes. First, constant joy; second, steadfast prayer; third, continuous thanksgiving. Constant joy, steadfast prayer and continuous thanks-giving. The first attitude, constant joy: “Rejoice always” (1 Thess 5:16), Saint Paul says. This means always being joyful, even when things do not go according to our wishes; but there is that profound joy, which is peace: that too is joy; it is within. And peace is a joy “at the ground level”, but it is a joy. Distress, difficulties and suffering pass through each person’s life, we are all familiar with them; and so often the reality that surrounds us seems to be inhospitable and barren, similar to the desert in which the voice of John the Baptist resonated, as today’s Gospel passage recalls (cf. Jn 1:23). But the very words of the Baptist reveal that our joy rests on a certainty, that this desert is inhabited: “among you” — he says — “stands one whom you do not know” (v. 26). It refers to Jesus, the Father’s envoy who comes, as Isaiah stresses, “to bring good tidings to the afflicted; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound; to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor” (61:1-2). These words, which Jesus will speak in his discourse at the synagogue of Nazareth (cf. Lk 4:16-19), clarify that his mission in the world consists in the liberation from sin and from the personal and social slavery that it produces. He has come to the earth to restore to mankind the dignity and freedom of the Children of God — which only he can communicate — and thereby to give joy. The joy which characterizes the awaiting of the Messiah is based on steadfast prayer: this is the second attitude. Saint Paul says: “pray constantly” (1 Thess 5:17). By praying we can enter a stable relationship with God, who is the source of true joy. A Christian’s joy is not bought; it cannot be bought. It comes from faith and from the encounter with Jesus Christ, the reason for our happiness. And when we are rooted in Christ, the closer we are to Jesus, the more we find inner peace, even among everyday contradictions. For this reason a Christian, having encountered Jesus, cannot be a prophet of misfortune, but a witness and herald of joy. A joy to share with others; an infectious joy that renders the journey of life less toilsome. The third attitude Paul points to is continuous thanksgiving, which is grateful love towards God. Indeed, he is very generous to us, and we are invited to always recognize his beneficence, his merciful love, his patience and goodness, thus living in unceasing thanksgiving.

En este tercer domingo de Adviento, llamado «domingo de la alegría», la liturgia nos invita a entender el espíritu con el que tiene lugar todo esto, es decir, precisamente, la alegría. San Pablo nos invita a preparar la venida del Señor asumiendo tres actitudes. Escuchad bien: tres actitudes. Primero, la alegría constante; segun-do, la oración perseverante; tercero, el continuo agradecimiento. Alegría constante, oración perseverante y continuo agradecimiento. La primera actitud, alegría constante: «Estad siempre alegres» (1 Tesalonicenses 5, 16) dice san Pablo. Es decir, permanecer siempre en la alegría, incluso cuando las cosas no van según nuestros deseos; pero está esa alegría profunda que es la paz: también eso es alegría, está dentro. Y la paz es una alegría «a nivel del suelo» pero es una alegría. Las angustias, las dificultades y los sufrimientos atraviesan la vida de cada uno, todos nosotros lo conocemos; y muchas veces, la realidad que nos rodea parece ser inhóspita y árida, parecida al desierto en el que resonaba la voz de Juan Bautista, como recuerda el Evangelio de hoy (cf Juan 1, 23). Pero precisamente las palabras del Bautista revelan que nuestra alegría se sostiene sobre una certeza, que este desierto está habitado: «en medio de vosotros —dice— está uno a quien no conocéis» (v 26). Se trata de Jesús, el enviado del Padre que viene, como subraya Isaías «a anunciar la buena nueva a los pobres me ha enviado, a vendar los corazones rotos; a pregonar a los cautivos la liberación, y a los reclusos la libertad; a pregonar año de gracia de Yahveh» (61, 1-2). Estas palabras, que Jesús hará suyas en el discurso de la sinagoga de Nazaret (cf Lucas 4, 16-19) aclaran que su misión en el mundo consiste en la liberación del pecado y de las esclavitudes personales y sociales que ello produce. Él vino a la tierra para devolver a los hombres la dignidad y la libertad de los hijos de Dios que solo Él puede comunicar y a dar la alegría por esto. La alegría que caracteriza la espera del Mesías se basa en la oración perseverante: esta es la segunda actitud. San Pablo dice: «Orad constantemente» (1 Tesalonicenses 5, 17). Por medio de la oración podemos entrar en una relación estable con Dios, que es la fuente de la verdadera alegría. La alegría del cristiano no se compra, no se puede comprar; viene de la fe y del encuentro con Jesucristo, razón de nuestra felicidad. Y cuanto más enraizados estamos en Cristo, cuanto más cercanos estamos a Jesús, más encontramos la serenidad interior, incluso en medio de las contradicciones cotidianas. Por eso el cristiano, habiendo encontrado a Jesús, no puede ser un profeta de desventura, sino un testigo y un heraldo de alegría. Una alegría a compartir con los demás; una alegría contagio-sa que hace menos fatigoso el camino de la vida. La tercera actitud indicada por Pablo es el continuo agradecimiento, es decir, un amor agradecido con Dios. Él, de hecho, es muy generoso con nosotros y nosotros estamos invitados a reconocer siempre sus beneficios, su amor misericordioso, su paciencia y bondad, viviendo así en un incesante agradecimiento.

St. Michael Youth Ministry started the liturgical season by spending time with Jesus on Tuesday, December 1st. We appreciate the 62 teens who joined us in prayer that evening. As a result of the Covid-19 Pandemic, with profound sadness we want to communicate that there will be NO Magi Tree this year. We will NOT receive any requests or applications. Please DO NOT call the church office or Helpline with any requests. If you would like to help SVDP continue their mission of helping those in need this holiday season, you can purchase a Walmart gift card ($20 or $25) and place it in the Collection Basket OR the Holiday Mailbox located in the church office. These cards will be used at the discretion of SVDP.

Society of St. Vincent de Paul Activities Report for 2020 Informe de Actividades de la Sociedad de San Vicente de Paul para 2020

Despite a tumultuous year with our economy devastated by Covid-19, our SVDP Conference of St. Michael the Archangel praises God for our charitable accomplishments this year. Heartfelt appreciation to our membership, parishioners and our benefactors for generously supporting the following activities:

• Through Home Visitation and Food Pantry, we have positively impacted 4,157 lives in our community. • 2,790 food bags, valued at $83,700 • 90 Christmas Gift Bags to the elderly. • 75 filled backpacks to Scott Johnson Middle School. • Numerous Food Pantry Deliveries to the homebound and ill during this unprecedented Covid year. • Through a private donation, six families in need received a complete Thanksgiving dinner. • 72 Christmas Gift Cards given to children in need. This effort is ongoing as our parishioners continue their

generous donations of gift cards (placed in collection baskets or in mailbox in church office). With great humility and appreciation it is a privilege to have been able to serve the Lord this year. God is love.
