Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Decimonoveno Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario
THE PRESENCE OF GOD After the miracle of Jesus walking on water, the disciples
exclaimed, “Truly, you are the Son of God” (Matthew 14:33).
Most Christians will probably never experience such a dramatic
miracle. Like Elijah, we await the manifestation of God in other
moments. Perhaps the biggest challenge for the believer is to
be constantly attuned to the possible presence of God in the
everyday events of life. This is a stance that takes some people
years to develop. Others seem to find the Lord easily in the
simple things. As the week unfolds, let us look for the presence
of God in the little things around us. Perhaps, like Elijah, we will
be surprised at what we find. And, like the disciples, we can add
our voice to the confession, “Truly you are the Son of God.”

LA PRESENCIA DE DIOS Después del milagro en que Jesús camina sobre el agua, los discípulos exclaman: “Verdaderamente, tú eres el Hijo de Dios” (Mateo 14:33). Es probable que la mayoría de los cristia-nos nunca vivan un milagro tan dramático. Igual que Elías, esperamos la manifestación de Dios en otros momentos. Tal vez el más grande reto para el creyente es estar en constante sintonía con la presencia de Dios en los sucesos de la vida diaria. Es una postura que toma años desarrollar. Otros parecen encontrar al Señor con facilidad en las cosas simples. A medida que transcurre la semana, busquemos la presencia de Dios en las pequeñas cosas que nos rodean. I do not know what will happen to me; I only know one thing for certain, that the Lord will never fall short of His promises. “Do not fear, I will make you suffer, but I will also give you the strength to suffer,” Jesus tells me continually. “I want your soul to be purified and tried by a daily hidden martyrdom”… “How many times,” Jesus said to me a little while ago, “would you have abandoned me, my son, if I had not crucified you”.

This Gospel narrative contains rich symbol-ism and makes us reflect on our faith, both as individuals and as an ecclesial community, also the faith of all of us who are here today in the Square. Does the community, this ecclesial community, have faith? How is the faith in each of us, and the faith of our community? The boat is the life of each one of us, but it is also the life of the Church. The wind against it represents difficulties and trials. Peter’s invocation — “Lord, bid me come to you!” — and his cry — “Lord, save me!” — are very similar to our desire to feel the Lord’s closeness, but also the fear and anguish that accompany the most difficult moments of our life and of our communities, marked by internal fragility and external difficulties. At that moment, Jesus’ word of reassurance, which was like an outstretched rope to cling to in the face of the hostile and turbulent waters, was not enough for Peter. This is what can happen to us as well. When one does not cling to the Word of the Lord to feel secure, but consults horoscopes and fortune tellers, one begins to sink. This means that the faith is not very strong. Today’s Gospel reminds us that faith in the Lord and in his Word does not open a way for us where everything is easy and calm; it does not rescue us from life’s storms. Faith gives us the assurance of a Presence, the presence of Jesus who encourages us to overcome the existential tempests, the certainty of a hand that grabs hold of us so as to help us face the difficulties, pointing the way for us even when it is dark. Faith, in short, is not an escape route from life’s problems, but it sustains the journey and gives it meaning. This episode offers a wonderful image of the reality of the Church throughout the ages: a boat that, as she makes the crossing, must also weather contrary winds and storms which threaten to capsize her. What saves her are not the courage and qualities of her men: the guarantee against shipwreck is faith in Christ and in his Word. This is the guarantee: faith in Jesus and in his Word. We are safe on this boat, despite our wretchedness and weaknesses, especially when we are kneeling and worshiping the Lord, like the disciples who, in the end, fell down before him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God!” (v. 33). How beautiful it is to say this to Jesus: “Truly you are the Son of God!”. Shall we say it together, all of us? “Truly you are the Son of God!”.

Esta narrativa evangélica contiene un rico simbolismo y nos hace reflexionar sobre nues-tra fe, tanto como individuos así como una comunidad eclesial, también la fe de todos los que estamos aquí hoy en la Plaza. ¿Tiene fe la comunidad, esta comunidad eclesial? ¿Cómo es la fe de cada uno de nosotros y la fe de nuestra comunidad? El barco es la vida de cada uno de nosotros, pero también es la vida de la Iglesia. El viento en su contra representa dificul-tades y pruebas. La invocación de Pedro —"Señor, déjame venir a ti!"— y su grito —"Señor, sálvame!"— son muy similares a nuestro deseo de sentir la cercanía del Señor, pero también el miedo y la angustia que acompañan a los momentos más difíciles de nuestra vida y de nuestras comunidades, marcados por la fragilidad interna y las dificulta-des externas. En ese momento, la palabra de tranquilidad de Jesús, que era como una cuerda extendida a la cual aferrarse frente a las aguas hostiles y turbulentas, no era suficiente para Pedro. Esto es lo que nos puede pasar a nosotros también. Cuando uno no se aferra a la Palabra del Señor para sentirse seguro, sino que consulta a los horóscopos y adivinos, uno comienza a hundir-se. Esto significa que la fe no es muy fuerte. El Evangelio de hoy nos recuerda que la fe en el Señor y en su Palabra no nos abre un camino donde todo es fácil y tranquilo; no nos salva de las tormentas de la vida. La fe nos da la seguri-dad de una Presencia, la presencia de Jesús que nos anima a superar las tempestades existenciales, la certeza de una mano que nos agarra para ayudarnos a afrontar las dificulta-des, señalando el camino para nosotros incluso cuando está oscuro. La fe, en definitiva, no es una ruta de escape de los problemas de la vida, sino que sostiene el viaje y le da sentido. Este episodio ofrece una imagen maravillosa de la realidad de la Iglesia a lo largo de los siglos: un barco que, al cruzar, también debe capear vientos y tormentas contrarias que amenazan con volcarla. Lo que la salva no son el valor y las cualidades de sus hombres: la garantía contra el naufragio es la fe en Cristo y en su Palabra. Esta es la garantía: la fe en Jesús y en su Palabra. Estamos a salvo en este barco, a pesar de nuestra miseria y debilidades, espe-cialmente cuando estamos arrodillados y adorando al Señor, como los discípulos que, al final, cayeron delante de él, diciendo: "¡Verdaderamente eres el Hijo de Dios!" (v. 33). ¡Qué hermoso es decirle esto a Jesús: "¡Verdaderamente eres el Hijo de Dios!". ¿Lo decimos todos juntos, todos nosotros? "¡Verdaderamente eres el Hijo de Dios!".

These last few months have brought so much uncertain-ty to all of as in so many aspects of our lives, including the financial. For this reason, we are extremely grateful for those who have been able to continue their support throughout the suspension of Masses back on March 13th. For those who couldn’t, we are also grateful that you considered it, even if you were unable to. A HUGE THANK YOU! We want to share with you the contributions received (see below) these last few months, since Masses were suspended. The dollar amounts are less than one-half of our normal monthly collection amount and way below our break-even point. Under normal circumstances we constantly review and reduce expenses wherever it is possible, trying to always be good stewards of your offer-ings. At the present time even more. Unfortunately there are some expenses, such as electricity, that cannot be materially reduced. For example, our cost of electricity in summer is $3,500 to $4,500 per month. Our Lord leads our way, we are confident that together as a Parish, we will move forward and accomplish what-ever He has planned for us.

Por esta razón, estamos muy agradecidos con quienes han podido continuar su apoyo durante la suspensión de Misas desde el 13 de marzo. Con aquellos que no lo hicieron, también estamos agradecidos de que lo hayan considerado, aunque no pudieron hacerlo. ¡MUCHÍSIMAS GRACIAS! Queremos compartir con ustedes las contribu-ciones recibidas (ver abajo) de estos últimos meses, desde que las Misas fueron suspendidas. Los montos en dólares son menos de la mitad del montón mensual que se recibide normalmente y también muy por debajo de nuestro punto de equilibrio. En circunstancias normales, revisamos constantemente y reducimos los gastos en la me-dida de lo posible, tratando de ser siempre bue-nos administradores de sus ofrendas. En este mo-mento aún más. Desafortunadamente hay algunos gastos, como la electricidad, que no se pueden reducir materialmente. Por ejemplo, nuestro costo de electricidad en verano es de $3,500 a $4,500 por mes. Nuestro Señor nos guía, estamos seguros de que juntos, como Parroquia, avanzaremos y logra-remos lo que El tiene planeado para nosotros.
