Primer domingo de Cuaresma Santo evangelio según San Mateo 4:1-11 En aquel tiempo, Jesús fue llevado al desierto por el Espíritu para ser tentado por el diablo. Y des-pués de ayunar cuarenta días con sus cuarenta noches, al fin sintió hambre. El tentador se le se le acercó y le dijo: “Si eres Hijo de Dios, di que estas piedras se conviertan en panes”. Pero él le contesto, diciendo: “Esta escrito: “No solo de pan vive el hombre, sino de toda palabra que sale de la boca de Dios”. Entonces el diablo lo lleva a la cuidad santa, lo pone en el alero del templo y le dice: “Si eres Hijo de ángeles que cuiden de ti, y te sostendrán en sus manos, para que tu pie no tropiece con las piedras”. Jesús le dijo: También está escrito: “No tendrás al Señor, tu Dios”. Des-pués el diablo lo lleva a una montaña altísima y, mostrándole los reinos del mundo y su adora. Entonces le dijo Jesús: Vete, Satanás, porque está escrito: “Al Señor, tu Dios, adoraras y a él solo darás culto”. Entonces lo dejo el diablo, y se acer-caron los ángeles y le servían.

FIGHTING TEMPTATION “Blessed are those who persevere in temptation, for when they have been proved they will receive

the crown of life that Jesus promised to those who love him.” –James 1:2 The tempter seeks to divert Jesus from the Father’s plan, that is, from the way of sacrifice, of the love that offers itself in expiation, to make him take an easier path of success and power. The duel between Jesus and Satan takes place through strong quotations from Sacred Scripture. The devil, in fact, to divert Jesus from the way of the cross, sets before him false messianic hopes: economic well-being, indicated by the ability to turn stones into bread; a dramatic and miraculous style, with the idea of throwing himself down from the highest point of the Temple in Jerusalem and being saved by angels; and lastly, shortcut to power and dominion, in exchange for an act of adoration to Satan. These are the three groups of temptations and we too, know them well! Jesus decisively rejects all these temptations and reiterates his firm re-solves to follow the path set by the Father, without any kind of compromise with sin or worldly logic. Note well how Jesus responds. He does not dialogue with Satan, as Eve had done in the earthly paradise. Jesus is well aware that there can be no dia-logue with Satan, for he is cunning. That is why Jesus, instead of engaging in dia-logue, chooses to take refuge in the Word of God and respond with the power of this Word.

COMBATIR LA TENTACIÓN "Bienaventurados los que perseveran en la tentación, porque cuando se les demuestre que recibirán la co-

rona de la vida que Jesús prometió a los que lo aman". –James 1: 2 El tentador busca desviar a Jesús del plan del Padre, es decir, del camino del sacrificio, del amor que se ofrece en la expiación, para hacerlo tomar un camino más fácil de éxito y po-der. El duelo entre Jesús y Satanás se lleva a cabo a través de fuertes citas de la Sagrada Es-critura. El demonio, de hecho, para desviar a Jesús del camino de la cruz, pone ante él fal-sas esperanzas mesiánicas: bienestar económico, indicado por la capacidad de convertir las piedras en pan; un estilo dramático y milagroso, con la idea de arrojarse desde el punto más alto del Templo en Jerusalén y ser salvado por los ángeles; y, por último, atajo al poder y al dominio, a cambio de un acto de adoración a Satanás. Estos son los tres grupos de tentacio-nes y nosotros también, ¡los conocemos bien! Jesús rechaza decisivamente todas estas ten-taciones y reitera su firme resolución de seguir el camino establecido por el Padre, sin nin-gún tipo de compromiso con el pecado o la lógica mundana. Note bien cómo responde Je-sús. No dialoga con Satanás, como Eva lo había hecho en el paraíso terrenal. Jesús es muy consciente de que no puede haber diálogo con Satanás, porque él es astuto. Es por eso que Jesús, en lugar de entablar un diálogo, elige refugiarse en la Palabra de Dios y responder con el poder de esta Palabra.
