Page 2 Fifth Sunday of Easter Dear Friends in Christ,

Happy Mother’s Day. We pray for all mothers this weekend. May the Lord bless and reward them for showing us the path to God’s love. On this Fifth Sunday of Easter, we continue to hear from the Gospel of St. John. Jesus says to His disci-ples “Do not let your hearts be trouble.” These words can speak to our hearts, especially during this time of COVID-19 pandemic. What does it mean to 'let not our hearts be troubled'? It means 'Stop being trou-bled in spirit. Set your heart at ease. Keep on believing. Keep on trusting in the Lord. Keep looking up to Him. Don't give up hope.' Jesus gives three things that would help them and us to stop being troubled.

(Excerpted from: The Sunday Website at St. Louis University):

I. Our Eternal Home in Heaven, With Jesus Jesus said: 'In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there you may be also.' Isn't it exciting and encouraging to look forward to the time when Jesus will return and take us to heaven to live with Him forever? Doesn't this give you the security you need to cope with any difficulties you may have to endure here for a while? This comforting thought can remove any fear or anxiety you may have about your immediate future.

II. Our Privilege to Know God, through Jesus Whenever our hearts are troubled, it is always encouraging to know that there is someone we can turn to for help. And the best person who can help us is God Himself. But this assumes that you can find God. Jesus plainly tells us how to know God; He did not say, 'I'll show you to way to the Father.' He said, 'I AM the Way.' He did not say, 'I'll teach you the Truth that you need.' He said, 'I AM the Truth.' And He did not say, 'I'll give you life.' He said, 'I AM the Life.' And be-cause He is the way, the truth and the life, He is the only means of reaching the Father. There is no other way to God but through Him. III. Be encouraged through prayer Whenever we are fearful about anything, we will also usually feel quite powerless to do anything. During these times, there are tremendous opportunities for us to do great things for God. And these become revealed and manifested only as we pray. If you feel down this week for any reason, because of COVID-19 pandemic, some sickness, some disap-pointment or some problem you face, don't be paralyzed by fears or feelings of helplessness. Find a place where you can be alone and pour out your heart to God. And you will soon notice a great difference. You will find comfort and as-surance as you pray. And then, as you entrust all your cares and problems to the Lord, you will find the strength and courage you need to go on, and to take whatever necessary steps you should take. Through the words of comfort Jesus gave His disciples, we have seen that we can be encouraged by the security we have of our eternal home in heaven with Jesus. We can also be encouraged by our personal relationship with God through Jesus, and God is the best help that anyone can have in times of need. And finally, we can be encouraged through prayer to be strong and to do great things for Jesus. In Christ, Fr. Godwin

St. Matthias Memorial Day: May 14th

According to Acts 1:15-26, during the days after the Ascension Peter stood up in the midst of the brothers—about 120 of Jesus’ followers. Now that Judas

had betrayed his ministry, it was necessary, Peter said, to fulfill the scriptural recommendation that another should take his office. “Therefore, it is necessary that one of the men who accompanied us the whole time the Lord Jesus came and went among us, beginning from the baptism of John until the day on which he was taken up from us, become with us a witness to his resurrection” (Acts 1:21-22). They nominated two men: Joseph Barsabbas and Matthias. They prayed and drew lots. The choice fell upon Matthias, who was added to the Eleven. Matthias is not mentioned by name anywhere else in the New Testament. What was the holiness of Matthias? Obviously, he was suited for apostleship by the experience of being with Jesus from his baptism to his ascension. He must also have been suited personally, or he would not have been nominated for so great a responsibility. Must we not remind ourselves that the fundamental holiness of Matthias was his receiving gladly the relationship with the Father offered him by Jesus and completed by the Holy Spirit? If the apostles are the foundations of our faith by their witness, they must also be reminders, if only implicitly, that holiness is entirely a matter of God’s giving, and it is offered to all, in the everyday circumstances of life. We receive, and even for this God supplies the power of freedom.

St. Patrick Catholic Church Parish Registration - Do You Need to Register?

ARE YOU: (1) New to the parish; (2) Moving back; (3) Just Married; (4) Attending mass but never officially regis-tered? (5) Even if you grew up in St. Patrick, you (as an adult—18+) need to register independent from your par-ents.

Please do not take your church registration for grant-ed. Attending Mass is not enough; there must be an offi-cial record of your membership in the Parish. Parish reg-istration is essential for many reasons. It becomes im-portant when you or your family members are receiving the Sacraments - First Communion, Baptism, Confirmation and Marriage. Registration is also required for those wish-ing to become a Baptism or Confirmation sponsor. In addi-tion, becoming a member of a parish gives one the identity of belonging to a family—the parish family of St. Patrick Catholic Church.

If you are not officially registered with the parish, please do so as soon as possible. All you have to do is contact the parish office at 815-385-0025 or stop in during office hours and request a registration packet. Registration packets are also available on the parish website at www.stpatrickmchenry.org—just click on Registration at the top of the home page.

As we all continue to navigate through social distancing and a focus on staying healthy, the impacts reverberate throughout our own lives, our local community and our country. Many of us have been unable to work due to

temporary business closures and/or our chil-dren being home from school. As we support our loved ones and friends through phone calls, social media con-tact and our prayers, you may wonder how you can also support others in our community. St. Vincent de Paul greatly appreciates your donations through GiveCentral; all donations go directly toward helping those in our com-munity who are struggling with utility, housing, medical bills as well as with food shortages. Proverbs 22:9 “Whoever has a bountiful eye will be blessed, for he shares his bread with the poor.”

HELP OUT OUR ADVERTISERS Our Sunday bulletin is an important way for us to communi-cate with you, especially during these days of the Coronavirus pandemic. It might be the only way that we can reach some of you. Every bulletin that you receive is paid for through the generosity of the businesses that you see advertised on the back cover. Most of these advertisers are members of our local community, and many belong to our parish. We urge you to think of them when you decide to have a meal or other item delivered to your door. Tell the business owners that you appreciate their support of our parish through their advertise-ments in the bulletin. This is one small way that we can work within our own community to weather the challenges that we face. Together we can help each other make it through. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc
