Dear Friends,

Sin has consequences one being that it wounds our human nature. So far, we have spoken of both the Sacraments and Prayer as a way forward, but you may have been surprised at the last way I listed: Fasting. You may have thought to yourself “don’t we usually do that in Lent? Giving up something for 40 days until Easter?” or something to that effect. Yes, this is true, but fasting is not something meant to be practiced only during Lent.

If we’re struggling with sin and its effects, feeling that even with prayer and the sacraments can’t seem to break free, fasting becomes a very powerful instrument in our toolbox to fight back. Why? Be-cause from the very beginning of the Church, we are all called to live asceticism in our lives. Now, often when that word is heard, people begin to think “heavy penance” and other images. But an easier defini-tion to consider is that “asceticism can be loosely defined as selfdenial with the ultimate goal of selfcontrol. And this selfdenial most often takes the form of…fasting.”*

So how do we fast? ** First, start with the basics. Fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, Abstain from meat on Friday’s (or some other foodbased form of penance or sacrifice outside of Lent), and observe the Eucharistic Fast which means No Food or Drink one hour before Communion (note that water and medicine are permitted).

Second, add something more. Once we build a foundation on doing what the Church asks of us, now we can build up our “spiritual muscles” (Please note: I almost added an Arnold Schwarzenegger pun here, but for everyone’s sake, I made a sacrifice not to do so. See? SelfControl!) Here are some ideas for adding something on:

Skip one meal a week Wednesday is a traditional day of fasting, so it could be a good day to do it.

No dessert on one day or more No salt on food No soda Skipping an alcoholic beverage on a particular day(s) Not eating between meals You can also fast from nonfood items, like forms of technology.

Fasting helps in turning away from sin. So as we fast bodily, we have to fast spiritually from the sin that we struggle with. It’s in this way that these lingering wounds that cause us to fall start to find their healing. Joined to the Prayer and Sacraments, God’s healing power starts to become very apparent. We can start to truly make our way forward in the life he has called us to, and find the healing that he wants to share with us.

God Bless, Fr. Jim
