Resurrection as “verb”

The prolific and insightful theologian, peace activist and storyteller Megan McKenna writes that resurrection is more than just a mi-raculous coda to the life of Jesus. Resurrection can become a spiritual practice. In her book Not Counting Women and Children: Ne-

glected Stories from the Bible, McKenna recalls leading a parish mission on the story in Luke’s Gospel of Jesus’ raising the widow’s son from dead in the village of Nain: “Someone called out harshly, ‘Have you ever brought someone back from the dead?’ I had been saying that life happens when we are interrupted, and that some of the most powerful acts of resurrection happen to the least likely people; that we are the people of resur-rection and hope, called to live passionately and compassionately with others, to defy death, to forgive, and to bring others back into the community, to do something that is life-giving, that fights death and needless suffering. And then this challenge from the back of the church. “My response was ‘Yes.’ I went on to say, ‘Every time I bring hope into a situation, every time I bring joy that shatters despair, every time I forgive others and give them back dignity and the possibility of a future with me and others in the community, every time I listen to others and affirm them and their life, every time I speak the truth in public, every time I confront injustice– yes– I bring people back from the dead.” The power of resurrection: that the good that exists in something– or someone– given up for dead and consigned to the abyss can be

brought to life and endure. What God has done in raising his Son to life, we can do in seeking to imitate his Son’s Gospel of justice, rec-

onciliation, compassion, and peace. As the Risen Jesus appears to the Eleven “as flesh and bone,” Jesus calls us to be “flesh and bone”

witnesses of His resurrection, to be the “flesh and bone” of His compassion and peace for every soul consigned to forgotten graves and

cemeteries of failure and rejection.

Dear Friends, Christ is risen! Indeed He is risen! I want to thank all who attended the Divine Mercy Service held last Sunday on the Feast of Divine Mercy, as well as all who at-tended our weekly Eucharistic Adoration throughout the season of Lent. What a wonderful way to pray, meditate, offer thanksgiving, to pray for ourselves and our loved ones and for the Church. The Eucharist needs to be the center of our lives; all that we do and all that we are. Please remember the commitment those of you made to our increased offertory commitment. Your generosity helps us to minister and be Christ in our community. Since July 2017, our Pot of Gold drawing has profited the church $5,302.00 so far this fiscal year. Thanks to all who use this enve-lope as an extra fundraiser that helps us with the emergency bills that pop up. It’s interesting to note that a few other parishes have also begun this Pot of Gold drawing. Congratulations to Vincenzo Francisco Palumbo on the occasion of his Baptism. May God bless him and his parents, Vito and Gab-riella Christy Palumbo. Our Festival plans are falling into place. Bill Bancroft and I have come up with some new menu items, relocating and reworking some of our food booths, basket auction, seating and beer booth. We are planning to open the month of May ticket sales with buy 20 tickets and receive 20 tickets free! I am the President of St. Joseph the Provider School. We will hold our annual school Basket Auction here at St. Patrick’s. Many of you have supported our Mission School for the Diocese of Youngstown. The Basket Auction will be held next Saturday, April 21, 2018 in the St. Patrick Church Hall. Tickets can be purchased at the Parish House or at St. Joseph the Provider School. Tickets are $25.00 which includes your buffet meal and opportunity to win a wide assortment of hundreds of prizes. Have a blessed week, Fr. Mike

Thank you to all who have participated thus far.

Your prayers mean so much and are greatly appre-

ciated.

“Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, ‘Peace be with

you.’ But they were startled and frightened…” Luke 24:36-37

Throughout the day we have many opportunities to “see the face of Jesus” in others and to “be the face of Jesus” to others. Do we take that opportunity to provide “peace” to those we encounter or are we afraid of what others will think of us and do nothing? Pray for the strength to live a “God-centered” life and not a “self-centered” life.

Prayer Requests Listed below are members of our Parish Family who have requested our prayers. If you are seeking prayers for relatives and/or friends who are not members of our parish family, please call the Parish House or email us at [email protected] to the attention of Nicole. ** Names remain on the prayer list at the request of parishioners for three months. If extended prayers are needed, please send an email or call. Thank you.
