Welcome A Message from Msgr. Joe Just over a month ago we were s ll celebra ng the Christmas season. In another few days we will begin the season of Lent. This sec on of Ordinary Time is quite compressed. But it gives us enough me to complete the first chapter of Mark, which we do today. We meet the leper who, cured of his leprosy, cannot keep quiet about what Jesus did for him. He provides an example of the believer tes fying to Christ’s power. May this image serve as the goal of Lent and journey to Easter as we experience in our Lenten prac ces of prayer, fas ng and almsgiving the mercy, healing and forgiveness of God may our hearts not grow cold in the face of a world cast in shadows of darkness and hate, but burn brightly in God’s love. As we begin our Lenten prac ces as a community you are invited to par cipate in collec on throughout Lent that will be dedicated to our local sisters and brothers who are s ll homeless due to the recent tragic fire at Griggs Farm. Our parish will be sponsoring a homeless family by contribu ng the addi onal expense of housing un l they are able to move back home. A por on of our Ash Wednesday collec on will go towards this project and a collec on box will be able in the ves bule of the church throughout Lent. The idea is giving up something each week of Lent and go place that amount in the box. We join in a World Day of Prayer for Marriage and ask the Lord’s blessing on all those of our
Lectio Divina: Praying with Scripture Lec o Divina is the prac ce of praying with scripture; it combines reading the text in its context, listening to phrases that speak out to us, medita ng on the text, and engaging with God in prayer over it. Through the richness of God’s Word, we are calmed, refreshed, and strengthened. Join us for an hour of praying with scripture every Tuesday, 7:30 – 8:30 p.m. in the Conference Room in the Parish Center. No prior prac ce or prepara on necessary. Eucharistic Adoration Eucharistic Adoration is each Friday following the 8:15 am Mass until 5:00 pm in the church chapel. Monthly 24 Hour Extended Adoration on the first Thursday into first Friday from 9:00 am to 8:00 am in the Parish Center, Mercy Chapel. Please consider spending some time before the Eucharistic presence of the Lord by signing up for a period of time. The sign‐up sheets are located in the vestibule. The church is open daily until 9:00 pm for private prayer.
Centering Prayer Group The Centering Prayer group will meet every Saturday at 9:30 am in the Mercy Chapel. Altar Server Ice Skating Party Our Parish Altar Servers are invited to an Ice Ska ng Party on Saturday, Feb. 24 at Mercer County Park off of Hughes Drive. There will be opening ska ng at 5:00‐7:00 pm and 8:00‐10:00 pm with dinner served at 7:00‐8:00 pm. Snacks and drinks will be available throughout the evening. Altar & Rosary Society The ladies of our Altar & Rosary commit to praying the Rosary to Our Lady for our parish community and inten ons. They gather monthly for prayer and mee ng. Bereavement Ministry The Bereavement Ministry seeks to assist families at the me of the passing of a loved one with the details of planning a funeral liturgy. Child Care/Nursery Ministry During the 10 am Sunday Morning Mass child care is provided by professionally trained staff for children six months of age to four years old. Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) Are you interested in learning more about the Catholic faith and how to become a member of our community? Do you need to complete your Sacraments of Ini a on? Then RCIA is a process for you. Contact Deacon Frank 516‐316‐2500.
Food for the Hungry When you are shopping, please remember those less fortunate. Only one can or box will make a difference and is important (no glass containers please). Items can be le in the containers at the Church entrances. Some items needed include: Boxed cereals, canned or dried soups, coffee, tea, canned meat and fish, canned vegetables, salt, macaroni and cheese dinners, cake mixes, flour, household and paper products, canned fruits, spaghe and pasta, sugar and rice.
Knights of Columbus The Knights are looking for some men ages 18+ to join us in serving our parish and the community. We do many different things, so there is something for everyone. We provide help to the needy, support various family ac vi es such as movie nights, and soup and salad for the parish on Fridays during lent. We also support various “Respect Life” events. The Light Ministry The Light Ministry offers help to anyone whose life, family or friends have been affected by alcoholism, drug abuse and other addic ons. We are available to listen, confiden ally, in a nonjudgmental way, to provide a safe support network and to offer referrals to assistance groups and agencies. Spiritual Direction Tending the sacred rela onship
Spiritual direc on is an on‐going rela onship between a “directee” (person seeking) and a “director” (qualified person giving guidance) wherein a sacred space is created for the explora on and deepening of the spiritual life. Through conversa on and reflec on, the directee becomes more a uned to God's presence and can respond more fully to the Divine as it is revealed in all areas of life. Direc on typically takes place in a confiden al one‐on‐one se ng and may include some form of prayer experience to increase awareness of the movement of the Spirit in the directee’s life. Faith Formation A Message from John Michael McGuire If you surf the web, you’ve seen a Catholic meme that says, “Ash Wednesday is St. Valen ne’s Day, and Easter is on April Fool’s Day. 2018 is going to be a weird year for Catholics.” If you think about it, isn’t every year weird for Catholics? Our faith is countercultural, and our priori es are different than most. When we turn on the television we are des ned to see scores of commercials encouraging us to buy gold in case of a financial meltdown. If these were made by the Church, they’d be telling us to store up treasures in heaven, where they can’t be destroyed by moths and rust! Society becomes hung up on youth and beauty. While they are focused on that, we go to Church on Ash Wednesday and have ashes smeared on our face in the shape of a Cross, and hear “remember you are dust, and to dust you shall return.” On its face, this seems pre y depressing. However, as we enter into the Lenten season, and redouble our efforts in prayer, fas ng, and giving alms, we’re reminded that there is something greater to strive for! So as we prepare to celebrate Ash Valen ne’s Day, maybe the best gi we can give our loved ones is a commitment to walk together in faith. As we live this life worrying less about the expecta ons of the world, and more about the salva on of our loved ones, we should find a special joy in our rela onship with Jesus. That might make us seem like fools on April
first, and every other day, but when they see our light, what the world deems foolish, may just become contagious! This week, let’s pray that more people find the joy that comes in following Christ, and that we can be be er partners to our loved ones on their walks. God Bless, and have a great week!

Family Life Days As you will recall from the Parent Information Orientation at the beginning of the year, according to diocesan policy, all children enrolled in a religious education program are to attend a Family Life Program. St. Paul is sponsoring two retreats one on Saturday, February 24 for 1st to 4th grade and on Saturday, March 10 for 5th to 7th grade. Both retreats start at 9:00 am and end at 12:00 pm.

Vacation Bible Camp Save the date. St. Paul Parish will host our annual VBC from Monday, July 9 to Friday, July 13 from 9:00 am un l 12:00 noon. All children from 3 1/2 to 9 years old are welcome to par cipate as campers, and teens are welcome as volunteers. This year’s theme will be Cool Kingdom Party: Mary Leads Me Closer to Jesus. Sacrament Policy Reminder It is expected that children begin preparing for the Sacrament of First Reconcilia on/First Holy Communion in first grade, and that young people begin preparing for Confirma on in seventh grade. This policy allows for a child to receive an adequate amount of prepara on and catechesis in order to experience and understand the sacraments they will be celebra ng.

A Message from Dr. Ryan Killeen A common thread that appears so o en in my conversa ons with parents is the fast pace of life. Even with a concerted effort we all suffer the effects of over scheduling, especially our children. Some mes it truly is the simple things that make the biggest difference. One such example is the family meal. Gathering together around the dinner table can be a challenge but certainly worth the effort even if it
can’t happen every night. While I believe cooking together as a family can be an excellent extension of the experience and skill builder for our kids, dining out and ordering in are great too. Engaging in meal me conversa on builds family unity, fosters vocabulary development and bolsters intellectual curiosity. Anne Fishel, co‐founder of The Family Dinner Project points to evidence that regular meal me can be a stronger indicator of posi ve high school performance than doing homework or playing sports. Children are more likely to develop healthy ea ng habits and con nue those habits as adults if they regularly eat family meals. Addi onal studies have shown improved over all health in children and a reduc on in symptoms of chronic health condi ons. The family meal is o en the most cri cal rela onship builder in a family each day. It gives us all a chance to breath, share, connect and hopefully laugh. Sharing together in a meal can open conversa on and strengthen connec ons beyond meal me. Grace before meals and refec on on the blessings of the day and having food on our table is the perfect way to begin. Throughout the meal engage your kids in conversa on with open ended ques ons about school and friends. As kids transi on into teens, while their inclina on may seem to be to distance from family ac vity, they need the experience even more. Children who regularly have family meal me are significantly less likely to engage in high risk behaviors such as drinking and drug use and show lower instances of anxiety and depression. There is also evidence that family meal me also reduces stress for adults as well. We all need to build me into each day to be genuinely present with one another. Yes, that means no phones at the dinner table. While we all need to be realis c, understanding it probably won’t happen every night, we can all make it a priority as much as possible.

Pastoral Hispana Mensaje del Padre Miguel Valle VI Domingo Ordinario. Marcos 1:40‐45 El evangelio cuenta la sanación de un leproso que para san Marcos es señal del poder irresis ble de Jesús. Sanar a un leproso equivalía a resucitar a un muerto. La lepra incluía enfermedades de la piel, como acné y soriasis, que a veces se podían curar; pero era una enfermedad que inspiraba terror, casi como el SIDA y el cáncer en nuestros días. Los leprosos vivían solos y aislados; inspiraban miedo y horror; nadie se les podía acercar. A veces los leprosos vivían en los cementerios, porque eran considerados como muertos en vida. La curación de un leproso era algo inaudito; algún profeta había sido instrumento indirecto del poder de Dios sobre la lepra (Eliseo en la sanación de Naamán el sirio). El leproso, hasta que se encontró con Jesús solamente había conocido el rechazo, injurias y desesperación. En Jesús encontró, compasión, acogida, amor y esperanza. Jesús inspiraba acogida y compasión, por eso el leproso "se le acerco," contra todas las reglas; a Jesús no le daba miedo la regla de que "quien a leproso toca, leproso queda. “La sanación que hizo Jesús produjo un cambio radical en la vida personal, social y religiosa del sanado; fue un renacer a la vida, ya que
desde entonces el hombre se veía a si mismo limpio, podía ser una vez más miembro ac vo de la comunidad, y podía asis r al templo en las fiestas y en las funciones religiosas. Los Santos Padres de la Iglesia nos dicen que todos somos de algún modo leprosos, y que la lepra es el pecado. Jesús nos sana de esa lepra para que cambiemos nuestra vida personal, para que convivamos en la comunidad cris ana en los sacramentos, y para que nos acerquemos con confianza a Dios nuestro Padre. La Campaña Católica Diocesana El próximo domingo 18 de Febrero tendremos esta campaña la cual se realiza cada año para ayudar con los diferentes programas de evangelización diocesana. Lenten Regulations: Fast & Abstinence With the beginning of the Lent, the Church proclaims anew Christ’s call to penance and conversion of life. Joined with the universal Church as a sign to the world to heed the call of penance and conversion, we embrace
the Lenten prac ces of fas ng, almsgiving and prayer. Lent from Ash Wednesday to Holy Thursday is a me for self‐denial, charity and prayer. The specific discipline of the Church in the United States regarding peniten al days is: The days of fast and abs nence are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. The other Fridays of Lent are Days of Abs nence. Those between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast. By this obliga on, the individual is permi ed only one full meal a day. At the age of 14, people are obliged to abstain from the ea ng of meat, but not eggs, milk products or condiments of any kind, even though made from animal fat. The obliga on to observe the laws of fast and abs nence substan ally or as a whole is a serious obliga on. The failure to observe one peniten al day in itself is not considered serious.
It is the failure to observe any peniten al days at all, or a substan al number of days, which must be considered serious. The obliga on of receiving the Eucharist at least once a year should s ll be fulfilled during the period from the First Sunday of Lent, February 18 to Trinity Sunday, May 27.

Next weekend is Pledge Sunday for the Annual Catholic Appeal throughout the Diocese of Trenton. Each year, the Bishop seeks the support of all of the members of the diocese to further the work of our ministries. Each of us has a vital part in all we do in Christ’s name,
and each of us can share in all we do with a gi to the Annual Catholic appeal. Our single Act of Faith propels the works of love
that build up our Church. You make that happen with a generous gi to the ACA. This year, St. Paul’s share of the goal is $ 151,000 As the people of the Diocese of Trenton, you have an opportunity to help others see Christ working in our midst. Please take a moment and truly reflect on any help you can give. We truly need everyone to par cipate. This year, we again are striving to reach our goal of $7 million, of which, our parish will receive 15%.
