One had to be old as Methuselah, riddled with old archaic language that people rumbled, stumbled, and bumbled trying to pray with it. Nobody there wanted to use that booklet. The other booklet I had a particular disdain, in my view, I thought it to be too fluffy filled 1970’s feel good language that really did not speak to the spirit and give good meaning to each particular station. Again, it was just my opinion, but I sensed that the people grew a wee bit tired of it since it was used for decades. I took a shine to Pope John Paul II’s version of the Stations. Each station would begin by announcing what the station was; then genuflect saying “We adore…”; then read a scripture passage that relates closely to that station; then a short reflection; then pray a chunk of a psalm; and finally sing the Stabat Mater on the way to the next station. I really liked the format of that version. Only one fly in the ointment: only seven of the traditional stations were used and other stations were inserted that reflected a more biblical account on Jesus’ journey to the cross. For example, in the JP II booklet, the first Station was “The Agony in the Garden.” That is very much part of Jesus’ journey to the cross as he makes that final step to do God’s will. Some of the traditional stations have no reference in any of the Gospel accounts. No one will find in Matthew, Mark, Luke, or John a passage saying Jesus falls on three different occasions, of Veronica wiping Jesus face. Even though one might think that JP II was on to something when that booklet was published, what parish in their right mind would go to the trouble and expense to change what they have on the wall to satisfy a booklet? In liking the format of the JP II booklet, I decided to take it upon myself to make my own version, taking out the stations and inserting the traditional stations back in. I did, however, use the “Agony in the Garden” as a sort of preparation to get us in the mood before we went to the fist station. For the traditional stations not used in the JP II booklet, I selected scripture passages and psalms that I thought would reflect well to the particular station, and wrote a brief reflection. For Jesus falling and Veronica, I used logical necessity to account why those stations are there. The folks at Saint John Vianney expressed how much they like what I did. In fact, the school principal challenged me to come up with a children’s version, which I did. Since I held onto the Publisher file, I used it to make it special to Saint Pius V and Saint Joseph and printed out booklets. We will use these booklets this Friday at Saint Pius V. FROM FATHER STAN 3

Wednesday is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of our annual journey through Lent. While it is a time of prayer, fasting and penance, it is also, and primarily, a time to prepare to renew our baptismal vows. In the early centuries of the Church, almost all baptisms were performed at the Easter Vigil, and the season of Lent was the final intensive period of preparation for that.

As a child, Lent meant a time to give up something, usually candy, for six or seven weeks. The big payoff of an Easter basket came after observing Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and the Easter Vigil. Sometimes as a family we would add some prayer, such as a rosary in the evening. But mostly Lent was a time to get through. Now I see it more as an opportunity. It is a time to reconnect with being baptized, a baptismal retreat that takes us from the ashes of Ash Wednesday, to the waters of Easter, and launches us toward the fire of Pentecost. It is a time to reflect on how I am doing in upholding the covenant I have with God. It is time to welcome new members, and to go deeper into reconciliation with others than I usually do. It is a time for additional prayer, and fasting, and almsgiving. But perhaps most of all for me, it is a time to be transformed more and more into Christ.

Lent gives us time to focus on something that needs transforming within ourselves. We can refrain from what harms us, and delve into things that will fill us up. It is here where fasting and almsgiving (sharing) are especially important. We need to fast from that which causes us harm, or harms those around us. We can share of ourselves or our resources to help those who need it. Perhaps we can fill ourselves with better things in this season of Lent.

Here are some quantifiable things I will fast from during Lent. These aren’t evil things, but I spend too much time doing them: watching TV, and doing the Sudoku puzzle, and more recently, online quizzes.

I don’t watch much TV before 10:30 at night, but then sometimes I will drift through 90 minutes or more of reruns, reality shows, and other fodder as I watch three and four shows at a time. It is practically useless, and cuts into prayer time, reading or writing time, and sleep time. It also shows little choice, little use of free will, just accepting what is there. It would be better to go to movies, responding to a real interest. As I cut myself off from TV, as I have for about 10 years now, I

have to be careful to replace that time and relaxation with good things. I can’t just substitute surfing the Internet or playing computer games. Reading, a nightly walk, prayer, or sleep is what I have to choose to do.

Puzzles are not bad things. They keep the mind sharp, but for me it can become almost an obsession. I don’t believe we are called to be obsessed, at least not with something like that. I’m finding it becomes something I want to do early in the day, before my work. I put it before other more important things, so I need to release myself from it. It isn’t a bad thing, and for most other people it is not something that is a difficulty. But for me it can be. Is there some similar thing for you? It could be coffee, overuse of cell phones, or a hobby that has become a burden, not a joy.

This Lent we will have a stand near the altar to receive your offerings, your Lenten covenant with God. Cards will be in the pews starting on Ash Wednesday. Write something you will do or pray for or share. Be transformed this Lent by renewing your covenant with God. You may find by Easter time that you want to retain this practice in your life. You may find yourself transformed, and entered into a deeper covenant with God.

On Thursday, February 19, St. John the Baptist school will have a presentation about 5th and 6th grade for current parents of children in lower grades in the school, and others who may be interested in attending those grades, or parishioners who simply want to see what is offered in those grades. It begins at 6:30 p.m.

I will be away from the parish much of Thursday and Friday this week, having a physical. (I don’t think anything is wrong, just doing what has become an annual checkup.) There will be no Masses on Friday morning, but there will be Stations at 5:00 pm in New Trier, and 7:00 pm in Vermillion.

At out Parish Council meeting this week we discussed a number of potential projects our parish buildings face. We plan to have a parish meeting about them, with rough figures of costs on Saturday, March 21 following the 5:00 pm Mass. We will provide a sandwich for people to tide them over during the meeting. Please plan on attending.

At our parish council meeting we also approved an extension to our support of active members who send their children to an Archdiocesan Catholic school, such as St. Elizabeth Ann Seton in Hastings or St. John the Baptist in Vermillion. Our parish will give $1,000 per child attending K-6 and $500 toward pre-school at Catholic schools. It is our hope many young families take us up on this opportunity.

We also increased the aid for those attending a Catholic preschool to $500 for next school year. We hope to get people to choose Catholic education at the beginning with this. Tuition at Catholic schools varies widely, but is probably lowest as St. John the Baptist in Vermillion, where in the current year tuition for grade K-6 was $1,900 for the first children, with reductions thereafter. For pre-school it was $1,100 for three-day and $990 for 2 day. Aid from our parish should make it a viable choice for many families. There is free busing from Hampton, New Trier, Empire, Miesville and other places. Please check it out. Call 651-437-2644 for information.

Fr. Stan will be away from the parish much of Thursday and Friday this week, having a physical. There will be no Masses on Friday, but there will be Stations at 5:00 pm in New Trier, and 7:00 pm in Vermillion.

Rosary Leaders Needed: We are looking for Rosary leaders for 8 a.m. Mass starting Jan. 4. Please contact the Parish Office if you would be willing to commit to a Sunday or two a month.

Children’s Liturgy: We are looking for help in leading the Children's Liturgy. If haven't done so, would need to take a Virtus training session. If there are enough volunteers, you should only have to do it once a month.

Money Counters Needed: We are in need of three more money counters to count the collection right after Mass. It takes about 15-20 minutes or less to count and then it is taken directly to the bank drop box. You would only count money once a month.. Please call the parish office if you can help with this ministry.

Lenten Regulations The following Lenten Regulations will serve as a guide in your observance of Lent, which begins on Ash Wednesday, February 18. “Christian faithful are to do penance through prayer, fasting, abstinence and by exercising works of piety and charity. All Fridays through the year, and especially during Lent, are penitential days”. Abstinence: All who have reached their 14th birthday are to abstain from eating meat on Ash Wednesday and on all Fridays during Lent.

Fasting: All those who are 18 or older, until their 59th birthday, are to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Only one full meal is allowed on days of fast. Tow other meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to one’s need: but, together, they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids are allowed. The obligation does not apply to those whose health or ability to work would be affected seriously. People in doubt about fast or abstinence should consult a parish priest or confessor.
