Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

The author of the Book of Wisdom praises the Lord’s power, jus ce and mercy, proclaiming that God’s might is the source of jus ce, that his mastery over all things makes him lenient toward all. By his own example, God teaches that those who are just must show kindness. God’s mercy gives his children hope because he does not judge harshly, but allows repentance for their sins. St. Paul tells the Romans that the Holy Spirit comes to the aid of our weakness be-cause we do not know how to pray as we should. The Holy Spirit intercedes for his holy ones according to God’s will. In Ma hew’s gospel, Jesus relates three parables describing the kingdom of heaven. In the parable of the wheat and the weeds, the farmer allows the weeds to grow alongside the wheat rather than risk pulling out some of the wheat by mistake. At the me of the harvest, the mature wheat will be gathered into the barn while the weeds will be burned in the fire. In the parable of the mustard seed, Jesus describes the kingdom as beginning with the smallest of seeds that grows into the largest of plants, providing shelter for all. In the parable of the yeast which causes the en-

re batch of bread to rise, Jesus shows that the power of God can transform all of crea on and his grace is more than enough for all of human sinfulness.

Pastoral Visits to the Sick & Homebound

The living witness to our hope in Christ, media ng God's presence in the world, is carried out in concrete ways in our world. Our Ministers of Care visit the sick and the homebound, bringing God’s love in their words and prayers and bringing the Eucharist to those who cannot come to Church. In the sacrament of the Anoin ng of the Sick, those who suffer receive the comfort and strength of God’s healing presence. If you or someone you know is sick, homebound or in the hospital, nursing home or rehab, please call the rectory to make arrangements for a visit.

Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 3

From the Pastor’s Desk

Today’s scriptures con nue the theme of hope for God’s people. We hear that God is God alone, and that he has the care of all. We hear that the Holy Spirit con nues to intercede on our behalf (which is why Confirma on is a sacrament that invites us into a life me rela onship of grace with God, not a past “done deal” event). And we hear that God is pa ent, con nually offering us his grace and mercy. Though we may sin and fall short, God gives us the grace we need to seek reconcilia on and healing.

The author of the Book of Wisdom gives us hope that, although God is a God of jus ce, he judges with clemency (mercy) and governs with leniency. God shows us through his own example that we are to be people who are kind and just to others. We have cause for hope because the Lord will permit repentance for our sins.

St. Paul builds on this cause for hope as he tells the Romans that the Spirit comes to the aid of our weakness, and intercedes for us even when we do not know how to pray as we should. St. Paul concludes this reading with the remarkable good news that the Holy Spirit intercedes for his holy ones according to God’s will. He calls God’s peo-ple “holy ones” reminding us that we are in God’s care; and he tells us that the intercession is according to God’s will, meaning that God has our salva on as his goal.

In the gospel, Jesus tells the parable of the wheat and the weeds. Jesus says that the kingdom of heaven is like a field that a good man (God) has sown with good seed (his holy ones). When the servants discover that weeds have grown up among the wheat, they ask the owner if they should pull them out. He tells them no, for they might also pull out the wheat. He says to allow the weeds to grow with the wheat un l the me of harvest. At that me the weeds will be bundled for burning, while the wheat will be gathered into his barn. The evil ones, sown by the devil, will burn at the judgment day; but his holy ones who have remained faithful will inherit eternal life.

In the longer version of the gospel, Jesus adds two more parables, the parable of the mustard seed and the parable of the yeast. The mustard seed, though the niest of seeds, grows into the largest of plants, offering shelter to all. The yeast, in small amounts, is able to leaven the en re batch of flour, allowing the whole batch (about 50 loaves) to rise. The leaven is the power of God that overcomes sin and allows the grace of God to be effec ve in our lives. Both of these parables tell us that the kingdom of heaven is big enough for all who come to believe and share God’s love.

Jesus concludes the gospel with the explana on that at the end me he will send his angels to throw those who cause others to sin and the evildoers into the fiery furnace. But the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their heavenly Father. While God’s jus ce cannot be avoided, our Lord is kind and merciful in his judgment.

The righteous are those who act with kindness and mercy toward others, who do not judge but seek reconcilia on and healing of rela onships within our families, our community and among na ons. Those who forgive are the ones who will be forgiven. Those who show mercy to others will receive God’s mercy. Those who intercede for others will obtain Christ’s intercession at the throne of God. Those who feed the poor will be fed at the heavenly banquet. In short, those who imitate Jesus are the ones who will be transformed into his divine image in his eter-nal kingdom. Those who don’t will be cast into the fiery furnace.

The summer is a me when many people are on vaca on. Historically both Sunday mass a endance and collec-ons drop off significantly during this me. However, the expenses of the parish remain the same. Please remem-

ber to send in your weekly envelopes or use Give Central as a way to make hassle free regular dona ons to the par-ish. Thank you for your con nued generosity and support.

Have a great week. Sincerely, Fr. Neil

Some Public Masses are now being celebrated for parishioners at St. Robert Bellarmine

Our church is reopening with care. You must be in good health, wear a mask, and be pre-registered via the website below to attend. (If you do not have access to the internet, please call the rectory office at 773-777-2666 and we will help you register.) Masses will appear for registration approximately 10 day prior to the mass date. To register, go to the parish website at: srb-chicago.org Choose: Visit the church website Scroll down to: Register for services and choose the mass option If there are slots available for your preferred mass, select: signup: (it will check that box) Under the mass time listings choose: Submit and sign up This brings you to a page to enter your name, email address and phone number After completing that information, choose: Sign up now Once your registration is confirmed we will email you TIPS FOR ALL WORSHIPERS, What to Expect. We ask that you read and review with family before coming to Mass. Please bring and wear your mask in church. Enter only through the Austin Avenue doors and an usher will assist you to your seat. Ushers will guide you throughout the Mass. After the service, leave using only the designated doors. We appreciate your cooperation and patience.

Dear Parishioners, The shelter-in place directives have affected all of us. While we were not able to celebrate Mass pub-licly, we are doing everything we can to provide parish services to you. The cancellation of Mass has lead to significant losses in our offertory income, which is placing all our ministries and operations at significant risk. Many people in our parish and community depend upon your regular, weekly offer-tory contributions and, during this challenge, we need your contributions more than ever. Please consider giving online at https://www.givecentral.org/location/147/event/2790, where you can make regular weekly offertory contributions to Saint Robert Bellarmine and keep our vital ministries and services going. Alternately, you can also text-to-give by texting the word “Sunday” from a smartphone to 847-243-6058. This provides a link directly to the Sunday offerings pages in Give Cen-tral. You can also scan the QR code provided here.

I am asking you to also maintaining your regular weekly donations level or even in-creasing it, if possible, during these difficult times. Thank you for your support of our parish. Sincerely, Fr. Neil
