Respect Life Ministry
As Catholics we believe Jesus Christ has entered our broken world to conquer sin and restore us to new life. Throughout every age
he continues to invite all women and men to follow him through his Church, to whom he has entrusted his teaching authority, so that
all can know and follow him.
~USCCB, 2012
July 25, 2018 marks the 50th anniversary of Humanae Vitae. This papal encyclical, written by Blessed Pope Paul VI in 1968,
provides beautiful and clear teaching about God’s plan for married love and the transmission of life. Visit usccb.org for more
information.
July 22-28, 2018 is National NFP Awareness Week: Generations of Love Natural Family Planning Awareness Week is a nation-
al educational campaign of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. The dates of NFP Awareness Week highlight the an-
niversary of the papal encyclical Humanae Vitae (July 25) and the feast of Saints Joachim and Anne (July 26), the parents of the
Blessed Mother. More information is available at usccb.org or www.fallriverfaithformation.org/marriage/natural-family-planning.
Respect Life Prayer Intention:
For engaged couples and couples discerning marriage; that they may welcome the Lord God into their relationship to discern His
will for them and their relationship.

From the Pastor
HOLY PENANCE
Once the priest has given the penance to the person, he or she should ask the priest any questions they may have about
it. If there are none and all is clear, the penitent is then asked to recite an act of contrition. There are several forms of
this prayer, but they must all contain two elements: true sorrow for the sins confessed, and a firm purpose of amend-
ment, meaning that with God’s grace and help, the person firmly intends never to commit the sins again. Without these
two interior dispositions, the priest cannot offer God’s forgiveness. When the penitent has finished the act of contrition,
the priest/confessor is ready to say the words of absolution. (Note: Without being strictly necessary, confession of eve-
ryday faults or venial sins is nevertheless strongly recommended by the Church. The regular confession of our venial
sins helps us form our conscience, fight against evil tendencies, let ourselves be healed by Christ and make progress in
the life of the Spirit. By receiving the gift of the Father’s mercy more frequently through this sacrament, we are led to be
more merciful as he is merciful.)
Saint of the Week 23 July Saint Romula
Saint Gregory the Great wrote about Romula, a woman whom he knew in Rome. She and a friend had become disciples of the hermitess Redempta, and all three had taken the veil. A woman of great patience, obedience, and silence, Romula lived a life of continual prayer. But even though, to the eyes of the world, Romula was a woman of advanced contemplation, God wanted her to become yet more perfect, and so he allowed her to sink into a crippling paralysis. Though bedridden, Romula did not despair. Saint Gregory writes, “the sickness of her body was the health of her soul; for the less she could do in other things, the more she did in prayer and devotion.” When Romula was close to death, she called her two friends to her bedside. As the women entered the room, they were met at once by a blinding light, so that they were forced to shield their eyes. At the same time, they felt the presence of a great many others in the room. A beautiful scent enveloped them. Even after the light faded and the heavenly companions had disappeared, the scent lingered for three days. A priest then came to bring Romula Viaticum, her last Holy Communion. After he left, a choir of angel voices was heard. Romula breathed her last and the sweet aroma faded away.
Saint Romula, pray for us!
