On one of the cable channels, there was a series that
featured interviews with great artists, musicians and
designers of all kinds. It was a fascinating look into
their lives, their work and their view of their craft.
While each one had a unique life story, there were
several things they had in common: the need to be
creative, the importance of a good teacher and role
model and the necessity of lots and lots of practice.
No one had a shortcut to greatness!
The Apostles are intrigued by Jesus. They are with
Him as He preaches, heals and forgives. His mes-
sage of love and faith appeals to them, so they ask
Him to increase their faith. But Jesus can do no such
thing because there are no shortcuts to faith, no sim-
ple road to take that makes the way easy. Doing
what is required is but the first step. Then it is the
spirit of sacrifice, dedication and service that allows
faith to grow stronger and deeper.
But God does not leave us helpless. St. Paul tells
Timothy that it is the Spirit that “makes us strong,
loving and wise.” These are the tools that we need
to grow in faith and holiness, the tools that help us
to persevere, to see God in all we do and to choose
to follow what is good. The Spirit will lead us,
guide us and help us. It is up to us to practice what
the Spirit teaches and remain faithful to what we
learn.

October 6 ~
Twenty-seventh Sunday of Ordinary Time
In today’s second reading, St. Paul reminds us of our
responsibility as disciples saying, “Stir into a flame the
gift of God that you have…” When we feel that we do
not have the courage to speak about Christ to others,
Paul also reminds us that “God did not give us a spirit
of cowardice but rather of power and love. ..” When
the disciples were worried about their mission they
turned to Jesus and asked for increase of faith. How
about us? Will we take God’s word to heart and share
it with courage?
