Second Sunday of Advent—December 10, 2017

Advent Lessons & Carols Please join the Saint Mary and Joseph parish community to welcome the Christ of Christmas in story, song and prayer on Friday, December 15, 2017. Our annual Advent Lessons and Carols is a cherished tradition in our parish. This year’s program will include the participation of the full community in singing of carols and hymns of the season, as well as quiet time for prayer and reflection. Our parish music ministries have come together to prepare this year’s program of readings and carols. In the midst of the “busyness” of the holiday season, come and recapture the true spirit of joy and hope of Christmas by being part of this year’s Advent Lessons and Carols. The service will take place at Saint Joseph Church beginning at 7 p.m. And plan to join us, following the service, for refreshments in the Family Room.

Fr Mark had a wedding one Saturday morning. The guests were gathered and the bride was present. But something seemed to be holding things up. Eventually, the bride went to Fr Mark in tears. It seemed her groom was stuck in Al-bany – no flights due to a snow storm. She wept at her disappointment and asked the priest if he would announce it to the congregation. “Tell them the reception will go on as planned.” There was no use wasting what they had paid for. Fr. Mark did indeed let the congregation know that the groom was delayed, but that they could move right along to the festivities. The people did go and enjoyed the meal, dancing and fun. It seemed everyone had a great time, even without the bridegroom. It seems that Christmas has become much like that. We have a bridegroom, Jesus. He invites us into a time of waiting and preparing for Him. But we are swept up with the glitter of tinsel and lights, food and drink, sales – sales and more sales! Have we forgotten the Special Guest? Did we remember to include HIM in our merriment? This, the second week of Advent, we celebrate faith - faith that will keep Jesus at the center of our season. Let us gather our families for a celebration that is about the new born king, not just things that are silver and gold. We can prepare our hearts as we anticipate the coming of Jesus in Glory. The bride weeps because her Bridegroom is delayed. Jesus is Emmanu-el, God WITH us. It’s a wonderful time of year to celebrate - let’s just not forget the guest of honor. Justine Dufour

Cluster Advent Penance Service Please consider joining the other parishioners in the area as we have an opportunity to prepare our hearts and souls for Christ’s rebirth. On Sunday, December 10 at 2:00pm, St. Matthew Parish in Windham, NH, will be offering the sacrament of reconciliation. All are welcome!

Our Lady of Guadalupe

December 12, 2017 The word awesome has lost its zing. “Webster’s dictionary defines awesome as ‘anything that leaves you in awe and wonder.‘ Like winning the lottery - twice,” comedian Bill Engvall once said. “That would be awesome. Getting a phone call from the IRS saying you’ve been audited and they owe you $50,000. That would be awesome.” Know what else would be awesome? Seeing an apparition of Mary, then having her grow roses in the middle of winter to prove it to the archbishop, then converting 9 million Aztecs within seven years. That would be - wait - that was awesome.https://cruxnow.com/faith/2014/12/12/four-awesome-facts-about-our-lady-of-guadalupe/

18-Hour Eucharistic Adoration Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament flows from the sacrifice of the Mass and serves to deepen our hunger for Com-

munion with Christ and the rest of the Church. Holy hours are the Roman Catholic devotional tradition of spending an

hour in Eucharistic Adoration in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament.

Please join us between 6:00pm, Friday, December 15 and Noon on Saturday, December 16. Sign-up sheets are avail-

able at church entrances, or contact Pat at 247-5649 or [email protected]

Pray for our parish, the greater Salem community, and your personal intentions.

Youth Happenings

What’s Happening at KidsChurch December brings us: Joy To The World! Candle, Candle burning bright, shining in the cold winter night. Candle, candle burn-ing bright, fill our hearts with Christmas light.

Light the Advent Candle One. Now the waiting has begun. We have started on our way. Time to think of Christmas Day. Last Sunday the little ones heard/acted out the Bible story focusing on how we need to get ready for Jesus. Jesus' cousin, John the Baptist, was excited because Jesus was com-ing. He told everyone to get ready for Jesus. Here are a few things John told people they needed to do to get ready for Jesus: Use good actions toward other people, and do what's right. God's king is coming. Get ready now, tonight! Forgive others! Share what you have. Get ready for Jesus's coming. Praise God alone! The people who heard John speak knew that they needed to get ready for Jesus. John gave them many examples to help them be kind to others. John also told them that only Jesus could make their hearts really clean. We need to get ready for Jesus, too! December 10th: Good News Mary! (You will name him Jesus) Dawn Pavlini, Director of KidsChurch [email protected]

Ministry Matters Christmas Spirit Coordinator Volunteers needed to help hang Christmas lights, set up the crèches and general holiday decorating out-side both the MQP and St. Joseph campuses. You can contact Kay Barretto at the parish office for both opportunities, and you will be asked to fill out a volunteer application.

HELP Religious Communities “Your generous contribution helps us to care for our retired sisters and enables our younger sisters to continue in active ministry,” writes a religious sister. Your gift to today’s collection for the Retirement Fund for Religious helps provide medications, nurs-ing care, and more for thousands of senior sisters, brothers and religious order priests. It also helps ensure younger members can continue the good works of their elders!

Food Pantry Acknowledgment Kellie Lavoie, our Food Pantry Director, would like to thank the Salem Exchange Club, the North Salem Elementary School and the Salem Cooperative Bank for their

food drives. Due to their generosity, many more people have been helped during the Thanksgiving holiday. Many blessings are wished for all of your employees and students who helped!

Caroling to our home-bound Saturday, 12/16 O come, all ye faithful -- we're heading out to visit our home-bound parishioners and sing Christmas carols for them. All who wish to par-ticipate should gather at 5:15 pm on Saturday, December 16th in the Family Room under St. Joseph church. After caroling, we’ll return to the Family Room for hot chocolate and goodies. Dress for the weather, as we’ll be outside at times. It would be good to have some larger vehi-cles so we can consolidate carolers in as few cars as possible. Flashlights can be handy; also GPS for navigation. Come, and spread Christmas joy!

Jesus Matters! Congratulations on your 34th Anniversary as our Deacon, David!! 34 years ago, on December 10, 1983, David Costello was ordained as a permanent deacon. How blessed we are to have Deacon David in our midst! Congratulations and best wishes for many more years of living the Gospel Message!!

During this Second Week of Advent, in your prayer and re-flection, picture God as the Shepherd Isaiah describes. See yourself as part of his flock. Allow yourself to be fed and nourished by him. Ask for the grace to become more com-fortable in the midst of our changing diocesan landscape and to grow in trust that the Good Shepherd is carrying you and all of us close to his heart and leading us with care. In our prayer and preparation this week for Christmas, and as we continue to envision the transition, the changing physical terrain and the shepherding image of Isaiah 40: 1-5, 9-11 can help us put what we are thinking and experiencing into a deeper, clearer, faith-filled perspective. Like the people of Israel, we are moving from one landscape to another as a dio-cese. Isaiah reminds us that in the midst of change we are to give comfort, to speak tenderly and to prepare the way for the Lord to enter more fully into our hearts and lives.
