Length-to-Weight Conversions
&
Identification Guide
for Southern African Angling Species
Chris de Vries
Preface
There are a number of good reasons for the move towards measuring rather than
weighing fish. In the 'good old days' we didn't think that our fishing had any significant
impact on fish stocks. The fish that died waiting to be weighed were regarded as
acceptable losses. This was especially true for cartilaginous species such as sharks,
skates and rays. With a general increase in the awareness of the vulnerability of our
coastal resources came the realization that we as anglers should do everything in our
power to return as many fish alive as possible. Measuring rather than weighing fish
allows just that - the ability to quickly measure and return your catch. There's also the
practicality of it. No need to break your back carrying the scale needed to weigh your
record-breaking catch! Not to mention all the nets, rigging and the gang of fellow
anglers needed to lift it all!
This book contains length-to-weight conversions for 129 bony fish species and 64
cartilaginous species. Also included is information on the current (September 2011)
South African shore angling records, as well as the daily bag and size limits and closed
season for each species.
The calculation of weights based on fish lengths is the result of years of research by
many dedicated scientists. Over the past 5 years I’ve researched scientific publications
with the aim of producing conversions for most, if not all of our angling species. This
publication aims to summarize and collate these efforts into a format that can serve as
a quick and easy reference for anglers.
Typically, scientists doing research on fish would measure and weigh large numbers of
fish and plot the results on a graph. From this data, an average equation is calculated,
which is the basis for the length-to-weight conversion for the specific species. The
more data is available, the more accurate the conversion will be. For many of the
seldom-caught species not much data is available, which influences the accuracy of the
conversions for these species. Accurate measurement is the first step in ensuring that
the estimated weight of your catch is accurate. There are, however, a couple of factors
to keep in mind. Firstly, fish, like humans, can have different weights for the same
length. Other factors that have a more obvious influence on the accuracy of the
weights are factors such as sex, the condition of the fish (sick vs healthy), time of year
and locality.
Bony fish (also referred to as “edible fish” by anglers) are measured in a straight line
from the tip of the snout to either the fork of the tail (known as fork length or FL), or to
the end of the tail (known as total length or TL). In the case of sharks, measurement is
made to the notch just before the start of the tail fin (known as precaudal length or
PCL) or total length. Skates and rays are measured in a straight line across their
'wingspan'. This is known as disc width or DW. There are a number of general rules
that make knowing which length to measure quite easy. For edible species with a
forked tail (such as shad or garrick) measure fork length. For all species that does not
have a forked tail (such as kob or rockcods) measure total length. Sharks with biting
teeth are measured to the notch before the tail fin (precaudal length) while those
without biting teeth (such as smooth-hounds and spotted gully sharks), are measured
to the tip of the tail (total length). For all flatfish (skates and rays) measure the
wingspan in a straight line (disc width).
As mentioned, the data provided in this book is the result of years of research by many
scientists, and special mention should be made of the research done by the Natal
Sharks Board, the Oceanographic Research Institute, Port Elizabeth Museum, South
African Institute for Aquatic Biodiversity and the Shark Research Centre. In particular
the contributions of Ms Sabine Wintner (NSB), Dr Bruce Mann (ORI), Dr Matt Dicken
(PE Museum) and Dr Paul Cowley (SAIAB) are acknowledged. A complete list of the
specific scientific references used to calculate weights is available at
www.shoreangling.co.za/references.html. We are fortunate in South Africa to have
such fine research institutions and individuals contributing to research. It is their
efforts that have made this first-of-its-kind in the world system available to anglers.
I am always looking for more data on actual length and weights. To this end I
encourage you to submit actual length and weight data in order to continuously refine
the accuracy of the conversions. This information you can e-mail to me at
[email protected]. You can also order this book by sending me an e-mail to this
address or by visiting the website: www.shoreangling.co.za
