Assemblyman Rocky Chavez and his chief of staff Michael Hadland were kind enough to offer the first real explanation we have ever received regarding not being able to get a ferret bill introduced these past eight years:

What we learned in 2018…
The Assemblyman and I discussed the legislation and we spoke with representatives from the committees the bill would go through, Dept. of Fish and Wild-life and the Governor’s office.
The reason this bill has not gone forward in years past is Governor Brown has said he would VETO the bill upon arrival to his desk. Apparently, members in the past sessions have approached the subject and received the same line from the Governor.
I know this is disappointing news, but the good news is there will be a new Governor next year and one who will be much more likely to sign a bill of this nature.
I can still come to your event and would be happy to speak to your group if you would still like, but the office will not be able to introduce the bill this year.

We did a Public Records Request Act for Governor Brown’s office and got nothing except an email from Fish and Game’s Legislative Director to one of Governor Brown’s legislative analysts saying “Oh Boy! Latest from Pat Wright’s newsletter"
and a notice that they withheld info that reveals the deliberative process of the Governor or his staff (how cloak and dagger).
On a disappointing note, I think we got Michael Hadland and Rocky Chavez in trouble. They were scheduled to speak at last year’s Ferret Round Up but didn’t return calls prior to the event and did not show up.
As of this writing the 2018 election is underway. Gavin Newsom is very likely to be our next Governor. We dearly hope he won’t put up a wall against ferret legalization as Jerry Brown did, but it isn’t looking promising.
We must keep building our organization and show California lawmakers that
Legalizing ferretsis the right thing to do foreveryone.

The effort to get this proclamation saw everything fall into place. A city councilwoman, Kristine Alessio who was on the board of TICA, The International Cat Association and a Savannah cat enthusiast. Also on the board is Bill Baber, a genuine small government advocate. They managed to convince the mayor and two other city council members to support the proclamation.
We thought we were on a roll but efforts in Culver City, Santa Clarita, Encinitas and El Cajon were not as successful. We did manage to get a similar proclamation from the Suisun City Council, because we have a friend on that city council.
Efforts for ferret legalization changed from ferret-friendly city efforts to the 2018 election and a whole new batch of legislators.
If we aren’t able to recruit a legislator in 2019 to introduce a ferret legalization bill we will be back in front of city councils taking our appeal to the local level. But I have a different route in mind.

Welcome to the 2019 edition of the LegalizeFerrets.org Calendar. We’ve been producing a calendar since 2010.
Every year we have a theme. And the 2019 theme came into my head, as do so many others, while cleaning the house. And for people who have ferrets, house cleaning takes longer.
But it is also more fun with the ferrets “helping”.
And on one such house cleaning morning, playing with the ferrets it dawned on me, some of my best friends are ferrets.
I have the best time with my ferrets while cleaning the house. Ferrets are interactive pets, even if some of the interaction is, shall we say (hoping no Fish and Game is present) destructive?

Astro seems to have a thing for attacking feet.
But house cleaning; trying to make the bed, mop the floor, or any other chore, these guys are joyous!
And for the hour or two the house stays clean it's good times!
