Maria Arenas,

2o DOMINGO DEL TIEMPO ORDINARIO/ 2ND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

©LPi

SANTA TERESA CATHOLIC CHURCH - BRYAN, TX. JANUARY 19th, 2020

GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE On the cusp of fame, power, or influence, would you turn it down? Today’s Gospel again features John the Baptist. Controversial but popular, John has gathered quite a group of followers. He has disciples. People come from near and far to be baptized by him. Pharisees and government leaders are drawn to his preaching. If John was another man, a lesser man, he would have claimed his own greatness. Instead, John the Baptist is a witness to humility. “The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him and said, ‘Behold the Lamb of God … he is the one of whom I said, “A man is coming after me who ranks ahead of me.”… the reason why I came baptizing with water was that he might be made known.’” Rather than point to himself, John points to Christ. John could have grasped at what he had accumulated. He could have seen Jesus as a Messianic competitor. Instead, John knows who he is. He knows his place as forerunner. Because John knows who Jesus is. “I have seen and testified that he is the Son of God.” A life of humility, a life for others, can be challenging to live. So much of our culture is built around achievement and individualism. We can justify it, too, in pursuit of “greater goods” and higher ideals. In the process, however, we might miss our own participation in the kingdom of God. John, for all of his humility, was not an afterthought. In another Gospel passage, Jesus calls him “the greatest prophet,” even the greatest of men. Why? Because he fulfills the mission given to him by God: to announce the coming of the Messiah. We too are prophets and forerunners. Our witness to the Gospel is meant to point people to Jesus. Consider your own mission this week. To whom are you called to announce the good news of the Son of God? LIVE THE LITURGY - INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK Our relationships ground and define us. Understanding where we come from, who matters to us, and to whom we have an allegiance all frame and direct our lives. One unchangeable about who we are is that God formed us in our mother’s womb. Unless understanding of ourselves begins with this solid fact about ourselves, our knowledge will always be incomplete. John the Baptist and Jesus knew who they were and where they came from. This allowed them to understand their purpose and express their identity. To whom do you matter? If your primary answer is God then you are on your way to knowing who you are. Each of us has a purpose and mission to fulfill. See God as your strength and get about the business of meeting life’s challenges. QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK - WE INVITE TO ALL PARISHIONERS TO REFLECT AND RESPOND TO SCRIPTURE First Reading Isaiah spoke of God’s desire to have his “salvation reach to the ends of the earth.” What would the world look like if this happened? Second Reading Today’s reading is the opening greeting of Paul’s First Letter to the Corinthians. Here and in other letters, Paul speaks of believers as being “called to be holy.” Who are some people you consider “holy” in your life? Gospel Reading John the Baptist spoke of Jesus metaphorically as “the Lamb of God.” What do you think this image means? ©LPi

Page 9: SANTA TERESA · SANTA TERESA CATHOLIC CHURCH -BRYAN, TX. JANUARY 19th, 2020 DEL ESCRITORIO DEL PASTOR/ FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK Staff/ Personal Clergy/Clero Rev. Víctor Mayorga Pastor/Párroco

2o DOMINGO DEL TIEMPO ORDINARIO/ 2ND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

God's Eyewitnesses Scripture: Then John gave this testimony: "I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him. I have seen and I testify that this is the Son of God." John 1:32,34

It is important for us to keep up with what is happening in the world, isn't it? One of the best ways to keep up is by watching the news. A typical news broadcast may have several live, on-the-scene reports. The announcer might say something like, "Fire de-stroyed a downtown business today. Channel 13 Eyewitness News reporter, Marci Brown, is at the scene. Marci?" Marci would say, "Thank you, Bob. I am talking to Caleb Smith who witnessed the fire. Caleb, can you tell us exactly what you saw?". The eyewitness would then tell everyone what he saw. It really helps us to understand what happened when we have an eyewitness report, doesn't it? Even though there was no TV during the time that Jesus lived, eyewitness reports were still very important. One day John the Baptist saw Jesus coming toward him. He said to the people with him, "Look! There is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. He is the one I told you about. I didn't know he was the Messiah, but when I baptized him, I saw the Holy Spirit coming down from the heavens like a dove. It came down and landed right on his shoulder. I saw it with my own two eyes and I tell you, this is the Son of God." When the people heard John's eyewitness report, it helped them understand and believe that Jesus was truly the Son of God. Okay, great job being eyewitnesses. You can stop making glasses now. Most people come to know about Jesus because someone else tells them about him. Perhaps it’s their parents, a Sunday school teacher, a pastor, or a good friend. Who is someone who has told you about Jesus? Maybe your parent, a friend or a teacher. These people whom you named have given an eyewitness account of how Jesus changed their life. God wants all of us to be a part of his "Eyewitness News Team." What would you tell someone about what Jesus means to you? Whatever Jesus has done for you, tell others so they can know Him too. Dear God, thank You for sending Your Son. Help us be witnesses so that others will come to know Your love as we do. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen.
