Scholarship Day Creative Component Idea Starters

William Ernest Henley, English poet

Out of the night that covers me, Black as the pit from pole to pole, I thank whatever gods may be For my unconquerable soul. In the fell clutch of circumstance I have not winced nor cried aloud. Under the bludgeonings of chance My head is bloody, but unbowed. Beyond this place of wrath and tears Looms but the Horror of the shade, And yet the menace of the years Finds and shall nd me unafraid. It matters not how strait the gate, How charged with punishments the scroll, I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul. Have you ever faced personal jeopardy but found the strength to persevere?

Excerpt from “The Dash” Linda Ellis

Author, speaker, poet www.lindaslyrics.com

“While it still amazes me, a simple poem I wrote one

afternoon in 1996 forever changed my life...Titled sim-ply The Dash, these 36 lines have touched millions of lives and have literally taken on a life of their own by

traveling all over the world.”

The Dash is a poem about the little line (the dash mark) located between the date of birth and the date

of death on a grave marker.

“So when your eulogy is being read With your life’s actions to rehash

Would you be proud of the things they say About how you spent your dash?”

How will you live the dash?

He makes it look so easy, shedding hair after hair as they slide to the surface and oat across the couch, not even noticing the bits of himself coming loose.

Some changes are bright and boisterous.

Other changes are fairly subtle.

How have you grown through your years in high school?

How will you change in college?

Michael Jordan Basketball superstar

Mother Teresa Catholic Nun, Nobel Peace Prize winner

“I don't claim anything of the work. It is his work. I am like a little pencil in his hand. That is all. He does the thinking. He does the writing. The pencil has nothing

to do with it.”

Matt Groening Creator of The Simpsons “I thought I was going to make crazy cartoons for the rest of my life. I didn’t think I’d ever get paid for it, didn’t think I drew well enough, but I knew it made me happy.”
