CANDID INTERVIEW

SAKET KRISHNA MBA 2012-14

With Sunil Bhaiyya

Avichal Sinha & Akashdeep Makkar interviewed our very own Sunil Bhaiyya

Avichal: Please tell us about your experience at SCIT.

It is almost 10 years I have been at SCIT. I have seen it growing and feel very proud about it. I love my work here. Initially there was not much infrastructure in the college. Now all the classes are well equipped with facilities. This college is like my family and I feel very good here. I am sure it will be a world class college one day.

Akashdeep: What has been the most memorable moment here?

The day I received the best staff award. I went very emotional for that.

2

Akashdeep: How has been your relation with students, faculty and other staff

members here?

Faculty

Corner Reflections Dec 2012

Students are very supportive here. They are one of the most important part of the college. They have come here from far places. I wish they get good placements and fulfil their dreams. Faculty and staff members are like family members. They are very good. I feel the sense of responsibility and attachment when they ask me to do anything.

Avichal: How do you maintain your family life -work balance?

I work in shifts and so there is no problem adjusting my family life with work. I take my work as if I am working for my family. It has never been tiring. I have always enjoyed working here.

Avichal: Any message for the college

I heartily wish that this college reaches heights and students go across the world and everyone knows about the college for its quality education.

It was the usual after dinner banter time on a pleasant winter evening for a group of SCIT students near the cafeteria in SIC, but only this time, their faces looked glum. There were no jokes and no laughs. The campus that day looked silent and shocked. It was the day when the shocking news of the horrendous Delhi Gang Rape had broken. The minds and hearts of these students of Symbiosis were distressed and anguished when they came to know the horrifying details of the dreadful act. The Awakening: The discussion among students soon picked up as everyone started expressing their disgust and choler towards the incident. They decided that something must be done to awaken the slopping governance in Delhi and to show the government of India that the youth of the country stands together and will not tolerate such acts of inhumanity going away unpunished. After a lot of brain storming among friends they decided to organize a Protest Candle March. The Accordance: With their aggravated souls, the students quickly got into action; mails were sent to all the three colleges in the campus. The SSR cells of each college got into action and soon a huge flock of volunteers gathered in support to organize the candle march. The next day, the activities of Poster making, funds collection and managing other logistics started. Students went to Kadam Sir to take permission for the march who also helped the students in clearing the permission formalities with the Hinjewadi Police Station. Many posters were made with Slogans such as “My Body My Right, My Country My Fight”. And “Crime against Women is a Crime against Nation”. The posters were pasted at many places in the campus. A lot of students came forward with generous donations for the funds to organize the candle march and amount to the tune of Rs. 5000 was collected within a span of few hours.

Media Attention: SCIT’s very own Director Dr. Raman Sir helped the students to get some media contacts by connecting them to Symbiosis’s official media cell in the Symbiosis Lavale campus. Digital and Print Media news agencies of the likes of TV Today Network, Times Of India and Lokayukt, came with their camera crew to cover what was named as The Symbiosis Candle March. Saturday, 22nd Dec The day of the protest march had come. The time was set to 7pm and candles were given to all the students. As many as 550 students gathered near the SIC’s main gate, all dressed in black to show their dissent. The march commenced with a short speech by Kadam Sir. All the students of junior and senior batches from all the three colleges joined hands in protest; many slogans were shouted during the march demanding Justice For Woman. Many photos, and interviews were taken along the way of the march by the media agencies and the students demanded justice and protection for women. The March headed till Hinjewadi Chowk and then back to the campus, captured the attention of many local residents and IT professionals along the way, some of whom even joined the students in the March and slogans. After returning to the college, the students put all the posters and candles at one place near the mess, and observed a silence for 2 minutes to pray for the speedy recovery of the divested victim.

Reflections Dec 2012 Cover Story

Getting a platform to showcase your talent is always a feeling which can’t be bounded in words although we can elaborate it a little. My experience at Colours-of-youth was awesome, as Isha Koppikar and Subir Malik not only selected among those numerous performances but also complimented my performance by saying its the best, it’s her greatness .Well, I sang my all-time

favourite song “teri deewani” and as MTV was taking separate short interviews of those selected, and was really very nice experience hearing “camera rolling …..Action” and guess what when the camera is seeing you. You feel proud when the name of SCIT roars among the crowd when you perform and moreover you not only perform but enjoy your own performance as well. Thanks Varun for giving me an opportunity to share my experience and thanks to all “Reflections” team for bringing such interesting edition every month.

“Singing is not what I do …..It’s who I am.” - Ishan Mishra

It was an excellent experience for me. The platform was really big and very versatile. It was very fortunate for me to be there with so many talented persons. It was not so easy to perform in front of so many people and excellent judges like Isha and Subir, still I gave my best and got selected through the round. I am really glad that it was my first time to be on such a big platform and to experience it with success is really something I would cherish. After all I would like to thank my institute SCIT to give us opportunities to nourish and cultivate our passion. Mighty mighty SCIT – Ritwika Naskar

Super 9 Cricket Tournament @ Lavale Campus:

Two teams from SCIT participated in the tournament. Both the teams won their first match against Indira College and SITM respectively. Both the teams performed really well and won convincingly with 7 wickets in hand. But second round was not in favour, and unfortunately both the teams lost their respective matches in it.

Inter-University 50 overs Cricket tournament – West Zone (held at Baroda): Three players from SCIT (Anupam Prasad (2011-13), Malav Mankad (2012-14) and Abhishek Maid (2012-14)) out of 16 players got selected for representing SIU Cricket team from 21st Dec to 27th Dec at Baroda. The team cleared their first two rounds against Bhopal University and Bhartiya Vidyapeeth University. Pre-Quarter final (3rd round) match summary against Ajmer: Ajmer won the toss and decided to bat first. They scored 230 runs in 50 overs. SIU got the target of 231 runs in 50 overs. SIU’s inning started with an initial fall of wickets, but then Danish Shadab (SLS –UG student), managed to control the situation and started playing sensibly. With due course of time, our team lost 5 wickets at around 80 runs. Then Anupam came to bat with Mohit (SIMC-UG student) and carried forward the score with decent partnership. Suddenly Mohit lost his wicket due to playing half volley shot giving an easy catch to covers fielder, leaving team again in a position of hardships. Then Malav came on ground to bat with Anupam. Both the players batted well and took the score near to 180 runs, and then Malav lost his wicket at an individual score of 20 runs while trying to play the sweep shot. Now the team is in trouble, because they have to chase the huge target with only 3 wickets in hand and runs required are almost approaching the number of balls left. From this situation, with tailanders left, Anupam started striking the ball hard but the series of losing players

from the other end didn’t stop leading to 9 wickets loss at the score of 208 runs. And finally we lost the match by 22 runs. Individually: Splendid performance behind the stumps by Abhishek Maid (Vice captain cum Wicket-keeper), Malav Mankad (scored 20 runs and good performance with ball as well) Anupam Prasad (scored 72 (6 – 4s and 4 – 6s) out of 59 balls and took 2 wickets in 5 overs) In the end, it was an amazing experience that we shared in the stated time period and our journey came to an end on 24th Dec. Irene asked, “Why are you always so suspicious? “, to which Sherlock Holmes answered, “Should I answer chronologically or alphabetically?”; and then laughter filled the assembly hall at SCIT. These were some of the few dialogs which made the assembly hall turn into a full-fledged movie theatre. It was Saturday, 29 December, 2012, and we were all watching Sherlock Holmes, the consulting detective, lay down tracks to hunt down Blackwood, the most dreaded criminal in the history of England (fictitious character from the Novel “Sherlock Holmes”). The movie was arranged by the Drishtikon club of SCIT, a unique initiative in itself; and was the last movie being showed for the students in the year 2012. It was a stress buster for the all exam stricken students; a dose of full entertainment where the audience sat awestruck by the innovative tricks used by Mr Holmes to track the culprit. Two weeks before that, a list of some entertaining movies were floated to all the students to vote for the best among them and in the end Sherlock Holmes was a clear winner among them. Students were excited and were looking forward to watch a movie, that too of their choice, in the same assembly hall where they attend lectures daily. The ambience of the hall seemed so different that day. The audience sat in ‘pin drop’ silence when Mr Holmes was solving the case with one step at a time while at other times, his witty humour made the audience laugh out loudly. Sitting in the dark, the audience was quietly enjoying the eccentric detective’s acts. The entire duration of movie had one interval where audience were posed some questions by the Drishtikon team based on the movie and people were on their feet yelling to answer them to grab a chocolate as a prize. Students enjoyed the entire fun-filled event conducted by our Drishtikon club thoroughly. Looking forward to more of them in 2013! Drishtikon rocked the night!

Mr. Krishnan opened the lecture by discussing the mutually collaborating forces driving any outsourcing decision. His discussion started with two strategic focuses: 1) How to increase the profitability of the business by increasing revenues, increasing volume and providing value to the customers and 2) How to reduce the costs by increasing efficiency and effectiveness. He explained various complex strategic sourcing models with aid of two case studies- Strategic Outsourcing at Bharti Airtel & Indus Towers: Collaborating with competitors on Infrastructure. interesting question of the students; one such questions with respect to identifying the core competencies of the companies was explained in a simple concept. The conceptual understanding of how companies come across strategic sourcing , and how these models enable organization to generate value for the shareholders was one of the key points of the lecture. When was the last time you shopped without asking someone you know about the product? You hardly remember, right? Yeah, usually there is a certain type of enquiry one always makes before buying an important item. In my case, if I want to shop something when I don’t know where to, I ask the most reliable person in my group who can suggest me both in terms of quality and cost. The person to whom I ask mostly varies as do the items that I want to shop. Did you ever want these suggestions to come from one source? Yes, that’s possible now; that too just a click away with Mr. Arun Purohit’s venture called “www.wic.co.in”. He has created a web based sensation on a ‘Superior’ emotion called ‘Trust’. I happened to hear about this e-commerce based venture from the founder himself Mr. Arun Purohit at one of the amazing guest lectures held by the college. ‘The Creator’ himself shared the story of his Venture. The reason for calling this entrepreneur, a creator, is not only because he initiated the start-up but also because he transformed his Ideas into passion and finally cemented a major ‘foot print’ in the Digital world. He compares Start-ups to Infants; as an infant needs to be taken care of till he grows up, in the same way; a start-up needs to be nourished with care so that it would shape into a healthy future. Mr. Purohit said that his innovation been funded from the Silicon Valley recently by way of real life scenarios. With a mission of creating a place for itself in the Pune first and the then greater Vision of making a sensation in the global digital world, this Entrepreneur also illustrated with an example how he sticks to his ethics by not paying bribe. Some of the actions of Mr. Purohit are listed as explaining the core idea of finding a product at the least possible rate and place at which it is available. The basic idea is to rate the places which are listed as per Trust score, so that it is appropriate for future usage. Challenges like that of setting up a company, patenting the idea, research taken before patenting the idea, getting the effective resources on the board to get the job done, working methodology of the company, marketing strategies like integrating with social media giants like Facebook, twitter to formulate the core idea

of knowing the best availability of product were elaborated upon. He also dealt with a few interesting questions on the technical details of Database maintenance, ways of survey of the data collection, reliability of the data provided, future plans about the company, dealing with the bureaucrats ethically, marketing strategies of the company etc. Mr. Purohit has announced that his company was open for the interns from our college which gave many of us a shot in the arm. The students are looking forward the chance to work with this Creative workspace.

There is a lot of buzz about “Entrepreneurship” but the way Mr. Arun Purohit and Ms. Rajeshwari explained the various challenges using their venture, SimpliBuy, was informative and very helpful for the students at SCIT. WIC (where is cheapest), as the name suggests, is a social way to discover lowest prices in your city. He discussed about “Angel Development” in the current business eco system by giving the example of onion layers; every time investors invest their money, they ask others before making any decision. WIC is a global application emphasized on rich process design and creativity which has very high revenue potential. Its management team too is at high experience level. How people will join a company`s network was explained in a more behavioural way in the form of trust factor; when users join company, it provides a sense of trust to create truth value. This truth value is then socialized and further validate by others to create a web of users with same opinion and success chain. The thought process of the future entrepreneurs made them to ask some informative queries like “what could be the legal issues one may face”; to which Mr.Purohit aptly responded by throwing light on how to register a company to the ROC(Registration of company) after checking the scope of the company and the association of work. This should be done by hiring some good consultant to avoid legal issues. In terms of opportunities; SimpliBuy is offering summer Internship for around 5 students to offer insights of social media marketing, business analysis and creative ideas for optimizing cost of products. The other aspect which is very important for an entrepreneur, as explained by Mr.Purohit, is to create technology rather than using it. One may not get success in initial period but the business should be taken care as a child, as it required proper nurturing and care for growth. When asked about the sustainability, he added, “Success always comes gradually with time”.
