Front cover illustration
The image shows features on the sea bed between the Faroe and Shetland islands in water depths ranging from approximately 400 to over 1000 m. The image has been compiled from commercial 3D seismic datasets originally acquired between 1990 and 2000 for hydrocarbon exploration of the area. It has been artificially illuminated from the top right (NE) in order to emphasize the subtle relief of the sea bed. Prominent in the image are debris lobes, incised (sometimes partially-infilled) linear gullies and overlapping basin floor fans. It is suggested that these features developed during the redistribution of large volumes of sediment from the shelf to the adjacent
slope and basin floor during periods of glaciation. The gullies are 25 km long, several hundred metres wide and up to 30 m deep. They were probably cut by downslope high-energy semi-liquid sediment flows. Individual fans occur at the distal end of each gully and are typically 15 km wide and 20 m high. The gullies and fans have a restricted areal occurrence and their location may be linked to the presence of an ancient ice stream on this part of the West Shetland Margin. (See Bulat & Long 2005. Images of debris fans and other deep-sea sediments on the sea bed of the Faroe-Shetland Channel based on 3D seismic data. Scottish Journal of Geology, 41, 81-86)
