SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME • JANUARY 20, 2019

We of St. Clement of Rome Parish, with the Power of the Spirit, welcome, embrace and unite all the many faces of
Christ who worship with us. As a family, we deepen our faith and seek God in the community,
through prayer and good works.

Sunday of every month in

From the Parish Office:
If you have been issued
envelopes from the parish
office, please use these
envelopes. It helps when
posting contribution amounts to
your account.
MCREST Guests Arrive Today
Even though the guests arrive on Sunday, the MCREST team can still
use your help. You can go to the St. Clement webpage, look for the
MCREST 2019 button and sign up for the spots that are open or you can
contact Jeanne at 586-219-1150 or Rhonda at 586-651-8959.
Any cash, check or gift card donations should be brought to the church
office and will be greatly appreciated. Checks should be made payable
to St. Clement MCREST.
Please pray for the MCREST guests and for our volunteers - that we
have a safe, compassionate, joyful and loving week.
Dear God, watch over your children, especially those with no homes to
return to at the end of long and weary days. For the volunteers who give
their time, talent and compassion. Protect them from all harm and keep
them from despair. Open the hearts and eyes of those of us with blessings to
share. Unite our voices in a call for justice: So that no man need ever lay
down for the night on a wooden park bench because he has no home; So
that no woman need ever tuck her children into the backseat of her car
because she has no home; So that no child need ever wonder, “Where will I
feel safe?” because he has no home; So that all those who wander and all
who are in need, find shelter this week at St. Clement and the peace they
seek. Amen
Thank You from SS. John and Paul Parish
I am writing on
behalf of SS. John
and Paul Parish to
thank St. Clement
Parish for donating
the fried chicken
dinner during our MCREST week.
Your donation of the dinner, which
was delicious, was enjoyed by eve-
ryone, and assisted us greatly in
serving our guests. It is through
the generosity of churches in our
community, like yours, that
allowed us to host MCREST and
serve our guests. The fried
chicken dinner is always a hit.
Thank you again for your
donation. I call and you always
come through and we appreciate
your support. Wishing you the
very best in 2019.

A Family Perspective
At Cana we get a
good insight into
Mary’s parenting style.
She did not plead,
argue, demand or manipulate. She
merely pointed out the situation and
trusted her son would make the best
decision. ~ Bud Ozar

RSVP’s Phone Reassurance Program is a lifeline for
older members of the community who would like the
comfort of a friendly phone call. Trained volunteers provide social
connection and ensure the well-being of isolated and vulnerable older
adults through consistent phone calls at predetermined times. Calls may
be made solely to check on a participant’s safety, for the purpose of
socializing, or both! For more information on how to enroll, please call 248

Tips for Preventing the Flu
1. Wash Your Hands - Think of all
the things your hands touch over
the course of the day: A grocery
cart, the handle on the door, that
$10 bill in your wallet. It’s
important to wash your hands regularly to prevent the spread of dis-
ease. If you are unable to use soap and water, use an alcohol-based
hand sanitizer. Proper handwashing is one of the best things you can
do to protect yourself and others from illness.
2. Rest up, Eat Healthy - A good night’s rest can allow your body to
build up its natural defenses against disease. And your body is fueled
by the food that you eat, so quality nutrition can help you fight off the
flu virus.
3. Sick? Stay Home! -Your body is telling you to stay home in bed, so
why not listen? Staying home and resting is preferable to struggling
through the daily routine, as it helps you recover and prevents the
spread of the disease to your coworkers and their families.
4. Cover up Coughs and Sneezes - The flu is a droplet-borne illness, so
those coughs and sneezes spread diseases. Cough into a sleeve, elbow,
or tissue that you throw away immediately, rather than into your
hands.
5. Clean Frequently Touched Surfaces - Sanitizing surfaces like
doorknobs, desktops, keyboards, and other often-touched items can
prevent them from becoming vectors of disease.
6. Take Your Antiviral Meds - If your doctor has determined that you
could benefit from these medications, take them as directed. They can
both shorten the duration of your illness and prevent serious
complications from the flu.
7. Get a Seasonal Flu Shot - A flu shot can offer excellent protection
from illness. It’s the best way to avoid or minimize the severity of the
flu.

The Hospital Window: A Short Story by Unknown Author
Two men, both seriously ill, occupied the same
hospital room. One man was allowed to sit up in
his bed for an hour each afternoon to help drain
the fluid from his lungs. His bed was next to the
room’s only window. The other man had to spend
all his time flat on his back.
The men talked for hours on end. They spoke of their wives and families,
their homes, their jobs, their involvement in the military service, where
they had been on vacation.
Every afternoon, when the man in the bed by the window could sit up, he
would pass the time by describing to his roommate all the things he could
see outside the window.
The man in the other bed began to live for those one hour periods where
his world would be broadened and enlivened by all the activity and color of
the world outside.
The window overlooked a park with a lovely lake. Ducks and swans
played on the water while children sailed their model boats. Young lovers
walked arm in arm amidst flowers of every color and a fine view of the city
skyline could be seen in the distance.
As the man by the window described all this in exquisite details, the man
on the other side of the room would close his eyes and imagine this pictur-
esque scene.
One warm afternoon, the man by the window described a parade passing
by. Although the other man could not hear the band — he could see it in
his mind’s eye as the gentleman by the window portrayed it with descrip-
tive words.
Days, weeks and months passed. One morning, the day nurse arrived to
bring water for their baths only to find the lifeless body of the man by the
window, who had died peacefully in his sleep. She was saddened and called
the hospital attendants to take the body away.
As soon as it seemed appropriate, the other man asked if he could be
moved next to the window. The nurse was happy to make the switch, and
after making sure he was comfortable, she left him alone.
Slowly, painfully, he propped himself up on one elbow to take his first
look at the real world outside. He strained to slowly turn to look out the
window besides the bed. It faced a blank wall.
The man asked the nurse what could have compelled his deceased
roommate who had described such wonderful things outside this window.
The nurse responded that the man was blind and could not even see the
wall.
She said, “Perhaps he just wanted to encourage you.”
Epilogue: There is tremendous happiness in making others happy, despite
our own situations. Shared grief is half the sorrow, but happiness when
shared, is doubled. If you want to feel rich, just count all the things you
have that money can’t buy. “Today is a gift, that is why it is called The
Present .”
Civil Rights Day
In Catholic social tra-
dition, "rights" corre-
spond to the treatment
every person deserves not because
of background or individual merit,
but by virtue of being created in
the image and likeness of God. As
followers of Christ, we are called to
a concern for our brothers and sis-
ters. This means that, in acknowl-
edging rights, we also acknowledge
responsibilities.
St. John Paul II writes, "every
man is his 'brother's keeper', be-
cause God entrusts us to one an-
other" (“Evangelium Vitae,” 19). In
our complicated world, it can be
easy to get overwhelmed by public
policy. However, we are not ex-
empt from engaging in public life.
Today, we remember that we are
all called to work to ensure that
social structures uphold human
dignity and support true human
flourishing.
