    Second Sunday of Easter

  • Divine Mercy Sunday 2020

With all the shut downs, the season of Easter brings a strange feeling. The

usual celebrations are not possible. We may be missing the BBQs with our

friends, holiday meetings with our family, grandparents and grandchildren

and the like. For that we will have to wait till this pandemic is over. What

are most cherished now are the care for the sick and the needy and quality

    time with the immediate family.

We need to keep our spiritual lives strong and meaningful in these times.

While we cannot attend Mass physically we must continue to keep our

prayers and our Catholic values alive. It is possible to view Masses on

various social media platforms, which many of us are already doing.

I take this opportunity thank each and every one of you for the support and

encouragement given to our last two Sunday masses streamed in the

Facebook and YouTube. We had a wonderful feedback from you all and

around the world. More than thousand people have been already viewed our

parish website masses. Thanks to everyone who helped us to make this a

reality. In a special way I thank Daniel Martinez, the videographer for his

dedicated service for recording and editing it. Also I thank the flower

decorator Cindy Bovell, Bernadette Scharf and Kerry Troost for supplying

us with music and liturgical resources. We shall continue this online service

till we get another direction from the diocese and government.

I invite for those people who are free to join in praying as a community at

    certain times during the day:

    • Mass at 7.30am

    • The Angelus at 12 noon

    • The Divine Mercy Chaplet at 3pm

    • The Holy Rosary at 7 pm

Praying as a community, whilst being at home or in isolation, means that we

are connected to each other with the Covid-19 affected people through our

prayers. I wish to assure you that we are praying for you all, particularly

during our private Masses and prayers. Happy feast of Divine Mercy!

    Fr. Johny Arattukulam, OCD

  • There is a beautiful sentence from the central character 'singer' to the

crippled girl in Calvin Miller's poem The Singer : "You will find my

child that love reaches out to the sick with a broken hand." When we

reflect on this sentence we realise that all loving hands that save us are

always wounded. Christ's hands are wounded. The scar of that wound

remains in his hands even after the resurrection. It is a visible sign that

how much he loved the disciples and us and how much he suffered for

them. But look at the words of Thomas. The man who said "let us also

go and die with him"(Jn 11:16) now tells, "unless I see the mark of the

nails in hands and put my finger in the mark of the nails, I will not

believe."( Jn 20:25). Those piercing words would have made Jesus'

heart sad and angry. But does he become angry? No. He is so loving

and compassionate. He knows that Thomas is like an obstinate child

who says- others saw it and I also wanted to see it.

Jesus understands that childlike character. That is why He appears a

second time specially for Thomas and shows him his wounded hands.

Now look at the proclaiming response of Thomas: My God and My

Lord(Elohim and Adonai). He proclaims that Jesus is the God of this

creation and the Lord of his life.

My dear friends we are going through a difficult time. We are being

questioned and criticised for our faith in God. More than that we are

personally undergoing moments of suffering, sadness, loneliness, pain,

anguish and depression. But remember that Jesus personally cares for

us as he cared for Thomas. His wounded hands are the source of

strength and grace for us. As we are celebrating this Sunday as the

Divine Mercy Sunday let us hold on to Jesus. He will cover us with his

wounded hands, the source of grace and strength for us. Let us also

remember the words of St. Peter: "Cast all your anxiety on Him,

because he cares for you."( 1 Peter 5:7)

  • First Reading Acts 2:42-47 A reading from the Acts of the Apostles The faithful lived together and owned everything in common. The whole community remained faithful to the teaching of the apostles, to the brotherhood, to the breaking of bread and to the prayers. The many miracles and signs worked through the apostles made a deep impression on everyone. The faithful all lived together and owned everything in common; they sold their goods and possessions and shared out the proceeds among themselves according to what each one needed. They went as a body to the Temple every day but met in their houses for the breaking of bread; they shared their food gladly and generously; they praised God and were looked up to by everyone. Day by day the Lord added to their community those destined to be saved.

    Responsorial Psalm:

Give thanks to the Lord for he is good, his love is everlasting. 1. Let the sons of Israel say: ‘His love has no end.’ Let the sons of Aaron say: ‘His love has no end,’ Let those who fear the Lord say: ‘His love has no end.’ R. 2. I was thrust, thrust down and falling but the Lord was my helper. The Lord is my strength and my song; He was my saviour. There are shouts of joy and victory in the tents of the just. R. 3. The stone which the builders rejected has become the corner stone. This is the work of the Lord, a marvel in our eyes. This day was made by the Lord; we rejoice and are glad. R. Second Reading 1 Pt 1:3-9 A reading from the first letter of St Peter He has given us a new birth as his children, by raising Jesus Christ from the dead. Blessed be God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who in his great mercy has given us a new birth as his sons, by raising Jesus Christ from the dead, so that we have a sure hope and the promise of an inheritance that can never be spoilt or soiled and never fade away, because it is being kept for you in the heavens. Through your faith, God’s power will guard you until the salvation which has been prepared is revealed at the end of time. This is a cause of great joy for you, even

  • though you may for a short time have to bear being plagued by all sorts of trials; so that, when Jesus Christ is revealed, your faith will have been tested and proved like gold – only it is more precious than gold, which is corruptible even though it bears testing by fire – and then you will have praise and glory and honour. You did not see him, yet you love him; and still without seeing him, you are already filled with a joy so glorious that it cannot be described, because you believe; and you are sure of the end to which your faith looks forward, that is, the salvation of your souls. Gospel Acclamation Jn 20:29 Alleluia, alleluia! You believe in me, Thomas, because you have seen me; happy those who have not seen me, but still believe! Alleluia! Gospel Jn 20:19-31 A reading from the holy Gospel according to John After eight days Jesus came in and stood among them. In the evening of that same day, the first day of the week, the doors were closed in the room where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews. Jesus came and stood among them. He said to them, ‘Peace be with you,’ and showed them his hands and his side. The disciples were filled with joy when they saw the Lord, and he said to them again, ‘Peace be with you. ‘As the Father sent me, so am I sending you.’ After saying this he breathed on them and said: ‘Receive the Holy Spirit. For those whose sins you forgive, they are forgiven; for those whose sins you retain, they are retained.’ Thomas, called the Twin, who was one of the Twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. When the disciples said, ‘We have seen the Lord’, he answered, ‘Unless I see the holes that the nails made in his hands and can put my finger into the holes they made, and unless I can put my hand into his side, I refuse to believe.’ Eight days later the disciples were in the house again and Thomas was with them. The doors were closed, but Jesus came in and stood among them. ‘Peace be with you’ he said. Then he spoke to Thomas, ‘Put your finger here; look, here are my hands. Give me your hand; put it into my side. Doubt no longer but believe.’ Thomas replied, ‘My Lord and my God!’ Jesus said to him: ‘You believe because you can see me. Happy are those who have not seen and yet believe.’ There were many other signs that Jesus worked and the disciples saw, but they are not recorded in this book. These are recorded so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing this you may have life through his name.

  • Our Lady’s Assumption Parish Bible Study

The Parish Bible Study Group are just about to complete The Bible Timeline Program and will move on to study Matthew: The King and His Kingdom. The current Program was completed online and the next Bible Study is intended to continue online until the current COVID19 restrictions are lifted.

While it is recommended that new participants commence their study with the Bible Timeline prior to progressing to Matthew: The King and His Kingdom, participants who choose to progress directly to Matthew: The King and His Kingdom will not be disadvantaged in any way as Jeff Cavins does a good job in filling in the gaps from the Bible Timeline Study. A synopsis of each program can be found below.

The Parish will order the Books for both programs, but participants need to pay for their individual Study Books directly to the Parish Office, before they are ordered. Please register your interest for either The Bible Timeline or Matthew: The King and His Kingdom by emailing Viv at the Parish Centre – [email protected] by Friday 1st May 2020.

The Bible classes usually run once a week from 7pm – 9pm (online) and the commencement date of each course will be confirmed once numbers are finalized.

Participants require a Catholic Bible preferably NRVS edition and a catechism of The Catholic Church plus the study book for the program.

Anticipated Price of Books (price depends on number of participants):

    Bible Timeline $46.00 Matthew $38.00

    BIBLE STUDY

The Bible Timeline: The Story of Salvation

Understand the Entire Bible The Bible Timeline study program takes you on a guided journey through salvation history. Presenter Jeff Cavins will show you how fourteen of the Bible’s narrative books tell the biblical story from beginning to end and give you the keys to understanding the amazing story woven throughout Scripture. In this revolutionary approach to Bible study, The Bible Timeline divides the Bible into twelve color-coded time periods that make it easier to follow its narrative thread. Using a unique color-coded chart, you will learn the major people, places, and events of the Bible and discover how they all come together to reveal the remarkable story of our faith. Through its 24 sessions, The Bible Timeline will teach you how to read and understand the Bible and introduce you to the wonderful narrative of the Bible in a way that will transform your life.

The Matthew: The King and His Kingdom study program shows how Jesus fulfills God’s promises to Israel and establishes his kingdom on earth. Through references to the Old Testament promises of God to his people and the messages God sent them through the prophets, the Matthew Bible study program provides the key to understanding the rest of the New Testament and Christ as the fulfillment of God’s plan. Matthew portrays Jesus as the true King who fulfills the Law the people of Israel have failed to keep and who introduces the new law that will accompany the New Covenant. In this 24-part study of the Gospel of Matthew, presenter Jeff Cavins explains how Jesus is challenging and empowering us to a new level of holiness and shows how we must be thoroughly immersed in the kingdom of heaven on earth, the Church, to live it.

  • A Prayer for Healing and Grace

Dear God, We confess our need for you today. We need your healing and your grace. We need hope restored. We need to be reminded that you work on behalf of those you love, constantly, powerfully, completely. Forgive us for trying to fix our situations all on our own. Forgive us for running all different directions when true help and healing must be found first in You. Forgive us for forgetting how much we need you, above everyone and everything else. We come to you and bring you the places we are hurting. You see where no one else can fully see or understand. You know the pain we carry. The burdens. The cares. You know where we need to be set free. We ask for your healing and grace in every broken place. Every wound. Every heartache. You can do far more than we could ever imagine. Thank you for your love that acts on behalf of your children. We reach out to you and know that you will restore and redeem every place of difficulty, every battle, for your greater glory. Thank you that you will never waste our pain and suffering. We love you. We need you today. In Jesus' Name, Amen

    Healing Bible Verses

My son, pay attention to what I say; listen closely to my words. Do not let them out of your

sight, keep them within your heart; for they are life to those who find them and health to a

    man's whole body. Proverbs 40-22

Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress. He sent

forth his word and healed them; he rescued them from the grave. Let them give thanks to the

LORD for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for men. Psalm 107:17-20

Heal me, O LORD, and I will be healed; save me and I will be saved, for you are the one I

    praise. Jeremiah 17:14

He said to her, "Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffer-

    ing." Mark 5:34

Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed.

The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective. James 5:16

  • The following extract reminds us that scripture guides us to reflect on our Amazing God in this time of crisis.

Try reading the recommended scripture while reflecting on each attribute of God. God Is Our Creator

Out of absolutely nothing, God made everything you see (Genesis 1:1). And every time, before God rested, he looked over everything he made and said it was very good (Genesis 1:31). God created us in our mother’s womb (Psalm 139:13). Every little part of you was thought up long ago. God knows everything about us. How many hairs we have on our heads (Luke 12:7) and our every thought (Psalm 139:2). God Is Our Shield

God told Abram in Genesis 15:1 that God was his shield. God is also our shield (Psalm 28:7). God knew we’d need protection. Before sin entered the world, Adam and Eve walked with God. They were safe. But once sin entered the world, things changed (Genesis 3). God provided the protection man needed from the beginning, and he is still our shield (Psalm 115:9). Psalm 18:2 tells us that the Lord is our rock and our fortress; someone we can take refuge in. God Is Almighty

Ephesians 6:10 tells us to be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might? Isaiah 40:28 tells us, the Lord is the everlasting God...He does not faint or grow weary. God invites us to come to him when we are weak and heavy burdened (Matthew 11:28). Colossians 1:11 tells us that we can be strengthened with all power according to God’s glorious might.

  • God Is Our Father

The Bible tells us as a good father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear Him. And the meaning of fear in that verse is reverential trust (Psalm 103:13). Even when we are disciplined in this life, it is out of love (Proverbs 3:11-12). When we trust in what Jesus did for us, the Bible tells us that we become children of God (John 1:12).

    God Answers Prayer

God tells us in Isaiah 65:24 that He will answer before we call and while we are still speaking, He will hear. Psalm 91:14-16 tells us that not only will God set us securely on high, but when we call on Him, He will answer us. In Exodus 3:7, The Lord saw the affliction of His people and was aware of their suffering.

    God Is Our Healer

One of God’s attributes is The God who heals. Jeremiah tells us in Jeremiah 17:14, Heal me and I will be healed…for you are the one I praise. In Exodus 23:25, the people were instructed to worship God and He would take away sickness. In 2 Chronicles 7:14-15 God tells his people to humble themselves and pray. He tells them to seek His face and turn from their ways.

God Is Patient God is not slow about His promise, rather He is patient toward you (2 Peter 3:9). Just like He was patient waiting for us to understand about the cross. Remember when Noah built the ark? God kept waiting in the days of Noah, during the construction of the ark. And He knew only Noah’s family would believe (1 Peter 3:20). God began a good work in us and he will complete it (Philippians 1:6).

God Is a God of Hope When we speak of hope in the Bible it is an expectation. Our hope should be in God. Psalm 39:7 Faith is confidence in what we hope for, without seeing it (Hebrews 11:1). We can exercise our faith by praising Him in all circumstances.

God Is Worthy of Praise But how can we praise God when things look bleak? It makes sense when God answers our prayers. It’s easy to praise when our loved one who is sick recovers. But what about when things are not going as we want them to go...can we still praise God? Oh, if we could just hold onto this truth, it would make all the difference in the world: We are to praise God at all times. Not because of what he does, but because of who he is! When difficult circumstances remain, and we choose to trust God, that is pleasing to him (Hebrews 11:6). Because that takes faith. Faith in God alone, not in what He can do. When Jesus went to see Mary and Martha after their brother, Lazarus died (John 11:41-43), Jesus thanked God for hearing him, before anything happened. That is faith.

  • Mealtime prayER Family Discussion What are some things you believe because you have seen them? What are some things you believe without having seen them? Faith asks us to believe things we cannot see for ourselves. Take turns to talk about the people who have helped build your faith in Jesus. Family Activity Think of people who have helped build your faith in Jesus e.g. parents, grandparents, godparents, sponsors, priests, teachers, friends. Remember these people in your family prayer this week.

  • How to pray the Chaplet of Divine Mercy

Praying the Chaplet of Divine Mercy is a glorious way to enter into the abundant Mercy of God. It only takes a few minutes and can easily be prayed almost any-

where. Using a rosary, follow the guide below to offer this wonderful prayer. It is especially good to pray it at the three o’clock hour.

Using a rosary make the sign of the Cross In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Optional Prayers You expired, Jesus, but the source of life gushed forth for souls, and the ocean of mercy opened up for the whole world. O Fount of Life, unfathomable Divine Mercy, envelop the whole world and empty Yourself out upon us. O Blood and Water, which gushed forth from the Heart of Jesus as a fount of mercy for us, I trust in You! (Repeat three times)

Introductory Prayers Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth, as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our tres-passes as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen. Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death, Amen. I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; He descended into hell; on the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from there He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

Prayed on large bead prior to each decade Eternal Father, I offer you the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Your Dearly Beloved Son, Our Lord, Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins and those of the whole world.

Prayed on 10 small beads of each decade For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.

Prayed after all 5 decades of Chaplet are complete Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Holy Immortal One, have mercy on us and on the whole world. (Repeat three times)

Optional Concluding Prayer Eternal God, in whom mercy is endless and the treasury of compassion—inexhaustible, look kindly upon us and increase Your mercy in us, that in difficult moments we might not despair nor become despondent, but with great confidence submit ourselves to Your holy will, which is Love and Mercy itself.
