“Carmel Legends”
Written in 1987 & 1988, and previously published in The Pine Cone
You have probably wondered how JAKESTOCK’S famous band got its name, “AbaloneStompers.” It happened one night in 1942 at“The Oasis” in Salinas. For its own amusement, the band started playing some impromptu blues.“Who-ee!” said the piano player, “that soundslike a lonely abalone calling its mate!” A lady, much impressed, asked the name of the piece.“That’s the Abalone Stomp,” said Jake, and eversince they’ve been The Abalone Stompers. Jakewas born in Savannah, Georgia in 1910, son ofa clarinetist in the hotel orchestra. When Jakewas 5, the family moved to Ohio, where Mr.Stock organized a 45-piece brass band, soldsewing machines, ran a pool hall and took on afarm near Columbus. Jake learned from himand became an excellent sight-reader, whichstood him well. In 1929, after 2 years atDennison University, he moved to Montreal andplayed with bands in hotels, theatres, resorts andclubs. In 1935 he came west to L.A., driving aused Packard across the country. He playedmany clubs and met his wife, Grace, onCatalina Island when she filled in for a reluctantpianist. “Best jazz pianist I ever knew,” saysJake, and he proposed, not once but 4 times!“You don’t want me,” said she, “because i want10 kids!” So did Jake, so he grabbed her, Theyfell a little short, only had 9, all but one ofwhom are living and doing well. Jake kept thekids in food and shoes by daylighting on otherjobs, becoming a journeyman brick mason.Stories about him are legion, unbelievable, andtrue! He has been honored by the U. S.Congress, the people of Monterey and others, honor he says “make me uncomfortable. Catchhim at the Hilton Inn on Sundays, or the RiverInn, Beach Club, Aquarium, etc. And expect tobe thoroughly entertained!
