All the destinations highlighted here are easily accessible by transit from the Hyatt Regency Minneapolis your home for the duration of the conference Wersquove designed the tours in such a way that each ldquoexplorerdquo map has at least 10 things to see and do within a walkable area and can be completed in about two hours

us who have spent our lives here or chose to call Minneapolis-saint paul home all we can do is laugh

The truth is wersquore fine dining craft brew drinking museum visiting music loving theatre watching year-round biking cabin going folks who take great pride in all four seasons and love our lake time We also love to take advantage of having no sales tax on clothing in Minnesota with one of the largest malls in the country located in our backyard

The Twin Cities are much more than quiet Midwestern towns they are in the middle of a reurbanization and offer a healthy balance of a cosmopolitan and friendly neighborhood vibes Minneapolis and Saint Paul have rich histories and offer lively vibrant social scenes filled with endless activities for both locals and visitors This book outlines highlights from the region and provides information on specific areas of interest for you to delve deeper into what the Twin Cities has to offer

Parks and a Lake (approx 68 miles) Run the length of the Loring Greenway leading into historic Loring Park Follow the signs for the Walker Sculpture Garden pedestrian bridge and continue through the Sculpture Garden and on to Kenwood Parkway Follow Kenwood for approximately one mile before zig zagging your way to Lake of the Isles Run around the lake and then retrace your steps home

Nicknamed the Mill City Minneapolis was incorporated in late 1860s and led the nation in flour production from

1880 to 1930 earning its moniker settlement began with the establishment of Fort snelling in 1819 as the first military presence in the area along the Minnesota and Mississippi Rivers Rivers continued to influence Minneapolis throughout its growth as the transportation system developed Washington avenue was built parallel to the river instead of the typical north-south east-west grid in the 1870s the streetcar network was introduced throughout the city and beyond operating until 1962 at its peak the system had approximately 530 miles of track and more than 1000 streetcars

Today Minneapolis has developed into a diverse network of neighborhoods Downtown Minneapolis has grown into the economic hub for the state home to companies like Target TCF Bank US Bank Ameriprise Financial and many others The unique skyway system links much of downtown Minneapolis connecting buildings through enclosed pedestrian footbridges across 69 blocks and more than 11 miles Development continues downtown with the recent addition of Target Field (Twins baseball) current renovation of Target Center (Timberwolves and Lynx basketball) and construction of a new Vikings football stadium Nicollet Mall and the Warehouse district serve as the entertainment hubs of downtown filled with bars restaurants music venues and theaters

Minnesotarsquos capitol city began life as a bootleggerrsquos settlement known as pigrsquos eye and only retained its

position as the state capitol because the approved bill that would have relocated the capitol to st peter disappeared

Having survived those early challenges the city grew rapidly to become a busy trading and transportation center It became a major center for beer brewing with the first brewery opening in 1848 While the local brewing tradition appeared to come to end in the 1970s today micro brewers have revived the art within the city Saint Paul was a significant banking and finance center by the late 1800s as it is today with grand new buildings that showcased the cityrsquos growing wealth and prestige Perhaps that wealth led to the reappearance of the cityrsquos bootlegging past early in the 1900s as the city welcomed high-rolling gangsters willing to check in with the police upon arrival avoid serious criminal activity and pay all required bribes However by the Roaring 20s gangsters operated freely and the city became known nationally for its gangster activity Today the city is considerably quieter noted for its historic neighborhoods lively arts community private colleges museums music and hockey

While Saint Paul was originally settled by French Canadians from Quebec they were quickly joined by German and Irish immigrants Later immigrants included the Swedish immigrants of Swede Hollow as well as eastern and southern Europeans who were in turn followed by Mexican immigrants Saint Paulrsquos African American community set down roots in the Rondo neighborhood creating a solidly middle class neighborhood Following the end of the Vietnam War Saint Paul became home to a large Hmong community many of who live at the edges of the old Rondo neighborhood along the METRO Green Line Each group of immigrants left their mark on the city in ways that can still be seen today

The Cathedral Hill area sits on the bluff above downtown anchored by its namesake Catholic Cathedral of Saint Paul This was a breezy largely rural area in 1891 when railroad magnet James J Hill built his home here Saint Paulrsquos elite soon followed erecting fine mansions along Summit Avenue and throughout the surrounding neighborhood Once the finest neighborhood in Saint Paul the area suffered years of decline and neglect before rebounding to become the charming and highly desirable community it is today While the grandest homes line Summit the entire neighborhood is filled with lovingly maintained historic homes The area around Western Avenue has historic homes and gardens lining narrow (sometimes cobblestone) streets Be sure to check out cultural attractions including the Virginia Street Swedenborgian Church and the Indian Hunter and His Dog sculpture Selby Avenue marks the northern boundary of the neighborhood and in recent years has attracted a wealth of shops restaurants bakeries and up-scale barsmdashmany located in historic storefronts with patios along the street or hidden behind Selby Avenue favorites include WA Frost Company Happy Gnome Ninarsquos Coffee Cafeacute Moscow on the Hill and Paper Patisserie Located nearby Grand Avenue also is home to many unique local shops

With downtown and the Xcel Energy Center (home of the Minnesota Wild) nearby the variety bars and restaurants of West 7th are crowded from happy hour until late into the evening Neighborhood hotspots to check out include Cosetta Tom Reidrsquos Hockey City Pub Glockenspiel Burger Moersquos Forepaughrsquos Mancinirsquos Char House or a number of Irish pubs Or go just a bit further to enjoy a pint at Summit Brewing Company The history of the area once a European immigrant community anchored by the former Schmidt Brewery is still evident in its restaurants antique shops galleries and microbreweries Nearby tiny Irvine Park is where Saint Paul was established in 1849 Today it provides a glimpse of a time long past During the weekend you are likely to meet a wedding party stopping by for photos by the fountain but this neighborhood is ideal for strolling at any time While most of the historic homes are private the 19th century home of Governor Alexander Ramsey offers guided tours
