Commodore’s Comments for September Newsletter 2015

Welcome to the 2015/2016 sailing season!

September is the beginning of our Rum Races, Lemon Point sails, and in October we will do our 2nd biggest event, the Around the Lake Race. I’m excited and hope you are too! Cooler and breezier weather will put a smile on our collective faces for sure.

We will have our socials as usual, the Buccaneer night at Logan’s Steakhouse in Ocala and a not so usual weekend potluck/meeting called Margartaville, hey why be normal?  Sounds like fun.

There will be opportunities to visit and support nearby clubs and their regattas. This month the Sanford Fall Regatta is on our calendar. It would be great for us to let the Lake Monroe Sailing Association know we sail regattas! You show me your sails and I’ll show you mine kinda thing.

We had a good turnout for our August meeting. We do need to shore up our calendar a bit. We need volunteers for October and November potlucks. Let us know if you can host.

So there you have it, simply said let’s go sailing!

Your Commodore, Herb Moore

Minutes of August 20, 2015 for September Newsletter

Commodore Herb Moore thanked Mary Schneider for hosting the event. It is noted that she made some special pies for the occasion.

There was a 50/50 raffle which split the collection of $46 with Ed Sims, the winner of $23.

Herb acknowledged the birthdays that members had over the summer. Members with Birthdays in June, July and August are:Lynn Barrett 6-2, Mark Ciraco 6-22, Jan Cole 7-24 Terry Davies 7-6, Juan Guerra 7-21, Lori Guerra, 7-21, Sandra Harton 8-9, Gloria Jaffess 7-8, Bernie Linnartz 8-11, Daniel Mendonca 8-16, Aristid Mendonca 8-14, Randall Moring 7-24, Kathy Olbeson 8/31, Jan Schumacher 8-18, and Lynn Sims 8-7

The Official Meeting was called to order at 8 PM Our Webmaster, Jan Schumacher asked how our website was working with the membership and if members were able to get the August Newsletter download from the site. Prior to the meeting there were some reported problems, but at the meeting no one complained. September’s Newsletter is going to be created on a different application with hopes that it down loads faster.

Jan Cole reported the balance for the August 20th meeting to be $3037.07. It was approved.

There was no July meeting and thus no minutes to report or approve.

The floor was opened for Old Business: There was a mention of Larry Moore’s Memorial and the July Kayaking trip with the alligators.

The Floor was open for new Business: There was a review of the year’s event calendar and it was noted that volunteers for hosts were needed for October and November to be resolved. September’s calendar was reviewed noting the Buccaneer’s night to be at the Logan’s Roadhouse 9/3 @ 6:30 pm, Rum Race # One 9/12 @11:30 am, Lemon Point Sail 9/13 @ 1 pm, and Margartaville 9/19 @1-8 pm.

There was a call for a volunteer for the Racing Commodore, Bob Cole accepted after Ed Sims declined the offer.

The Regular Meeting adjourned at 8:45 PM

There was a colorful OBRS Meeting that followed: Jim Edens presented the Gavel to Bob Cole for the audacity of paddling in the company of ailing alligators and mean-spirited reflections of queuing turtles. Then Jim presented Ed Sims with a case of beer and a miniature reproduction of the gavel that Jim handily crafted.

THE POTLUCK DINNER MEETING AT MARY’S

Our first official OSC meeting of the 2015-2016 season was brought to order Aug 20that Mary Schneider’s beautiful home on Sunset Harbor by Herb Moore our new com-modore. Lots of good food, especially Mary’s delicious pies, energized the members to discuss such things as the new schedule of events and the consequences of paddling among Florida’s tropical environment . “You had to be there” or, read the minutes.

LMSA IS HAVING A REGATTA

Sailors It's that time of year again, time to start thinking about the LMSA hosted Sanford Fall Regatta, the weekend of

September 26th and 27th.

If you haven't already registered, please do so. The online registration link can be found at

Regatta Network: http://www.regattanetwork.com/event/10560#_home

This year's event is looking to be very well attended. We already have heavy interest from the Lightning, Flying

Scot, Windmill, and San Juan fleets. I'm expecting over 40 boats. We have two PRO's lined up to run two courses, and

the Power Squadron to bring their fleet for marks and safety.
