Back to School Breakfast Gets High Marks

Hulett Environmental Services, in partnership with Bank of America, presented the annual Back-to-School Breakfast, featuring Bill Malone, Superintendent of the Palm Beach County School District.

The Chamber debuted its new Education Guide to the Palm Beaches at the breakfast. Copies are available in the lobby of the Chamber.

Kelly Sobolewski, the Market Manager for Bank of America in Palm Beach County, spoke about the financial institution’s commitment to education.

Hulett Environmental Services’ Greg Rice’s quick wit and one-liners served as the opening act for Mr. Malone.

In his State of the Schools address, Mr. Malone pointed out for the seventh consecutive

year that the School District has received an A rating from the Florida Department of Education, with South Olive Elementary School receiving the highest FCAT score in the District. The District is in compliance with the mandated class-size reduction limits.

The Women in Business Committee donated school supplies that served as the morning’s centerpieces. Immediately following the Breakfast, they were delivered to Belvedere Elementary School. The school, in which approximately 80% of its students are supported by the No Child Left Behind federal program and receive free or reduced meals, was in need of uniforms, which are part of the mandatory dress code. Attendees contributed approximately $500 and a check has been presented to Diane Mahar, Principal.

Dr. Dennis Gallon – Palm Beach State College, Chuck Shaw - School Board Member, Kelly Sobolewski – Bank of America, Karen Brill - School Board Member, Dennis Yuzenas – Oxbridge Academy of the Palm Beaches, Bill Malone – Superintendent, Jenny Prior Brown - School Board Member, Frank Barbieri - School Board Member, Greg Rice – Hulett Environmental, Carey O’Donnell – Chamber Chair.

The Ambassadors, the Chambers public relations committee, is a work-oriented group that assists the Chamber with events, orienting members who have recently joined and recruiting new ones. In reward for their hard work, they were treated to a Happy Hour at The Wine Cellar at Boynton Beach, located at 1500 Gateway Blvd., Boynton Beach. The gracious hosts provided an elegant wine tasting and an opportunity for the Ambassadors to network at a private social event. Ambassador Happy Hours are open only to Ambassadors and special guests. For more information on the Ambassador Committee and hosting Ambassador Happy Hours, contact Kelly Fanelli, Membership Director, at (561) 833-3711 ext 235 or [email protected].

At their August meeting, the Women in Business Committee conducted their annual school supplies drive to benefit the Belvedere Elementary School in West Palm Beach. The items were used as centerpieces at the Back-to-School Breakfast to raise awareness for the school. The guest speaker was The Palm Beach Post’s entertainment writer, Leslie Streeter. If it is about music, movies, nightlife, food, drinks TV or weird celebrity hijinks, she has something to say about it. Ms. Streeter offered her insights into her experience as a pop-culture writer. For information about joining the Women in Business Committee, contact Kelley Burke at [email protected] or (561) 833-3711 (ext. 231).

Members In MotionNetworking!

Top Three DOs and DON’Ts!Do have a plan. Make a list of companies, individuals and business categories with whom you’d like to do business. Look for them at the event and ask your current contacts there if they know any of them.

Don’t go unprepared. Get a professional name tag and business card. Use your logo, colors and branding. Be easy to read, understand and remember.

Do Set Goals. You don’t have to meet everyone in the room, but don’t leave until you get at least five (or the number of your choice) business cards for GREAT contacts.

Don’t try to “sell” at events. This is an opportunity to meet contacts- not make a sales presentation.

Do follow up! Make notes on the backs of the cards immediately after the event to remind yourself of important details.

Don’t network with your hands full of food and beverages. This is network, not net eat and drink. Get your “goal” cards first.

Chef Charles is dedicated to serving delicious ocean-to-table and farm-to-table cuisine that is inspired, innovative and fresh.
