These two nights at Montmartre are a celebration of the universe that Bill Evans was part of creating, indeed inspiring almost all living pianists today, and definitely placing Evans among the greatest jazz pianists ever. His mu- sic continues to resonate and Thomas Clausen Trio is a beautiful chance to hear the famous compositions and standards immortalized by Bill Evans. JAZZ, TANGO AND A TASTE OF ITALY PAOLO RUSSO SOLO & TRIO Paolo Russo (piano and bandoneón / IT), Klaus Hovman (bass / DK), Niclas Bardeleben (drums / DK) Italian pianist and bandeneón player Paolo Russo is among Europe’s new great jazz personalities and we are now feeling the musical benefit of having his talent on our doorstep after he decided to move to and live in Copenhagen. On this evening Paolo draws on his large repertoire rang- ing from unique interpretations of Piazolla over jazz standards to his own beautiful compositions, performing both solo and in trio with bass veteran Klaus Hovman and the young drumming phenomenon Niclas Bardeleben. An evening for those who love Piazolla, tango and jazz with a taste of Italy. ONE OF DENMARK’S BEST JAZZ COMPOSERS WITH THE YOUNG VOCAL TALENT EMBORG GROUP FEAT. MALENE MORTENSEN Malene Mortensen (vocal / DK), Jørgen Emborg (piano / DK), Hans Ulrik (sax / DK), Paul Hinz (bass / DK) , Niclas Campagnol (drums / DK) We are not afraid to call Jørgen Emborg one of Danish jazz’s most interesting composers in the jazz genre. In the last 20 years he has composed countless beautiful and endear- ing songs that are much appreciated by a large and enthusiastic audience. We especially remember his brilliant collaboration with Danish jazz singer Mona Larsen, Emborg Larsen Quintet, which quickly became known as the best vocal ensemble at the time. Today Emborg is assembling all his successful compositions in a new collaboration with another promising Danish singer, Malene Mortensen. With virtuosity Malene Mortensen adds an extra spark of intensity and delivers just the right amount of sensitivity to the numbers. THE GREAT SWEDISH VOCALIST WITH HER QUARTET LENA ERICSSON QUARTET Linda Ericsson, (vocal / SE), Ole Kock Hansen, (piano / DK), Bo Stief, (bass / DK), Aage Tanggaard, (drums / DK) Sweden has a long tradition of producing some of the best singers, whether it is jazz, pop or folk music. Lena Ericsson rightfully belongs to this category with a beautiful and pure Nordic sound, just like we know it from great singers like Monica Zetterlund, Lisa Nilsson and Victoria Tolstoy. Lena Ericsson might not be a strong name in Denmark (yet), but she is a singer out of the ordinary; her collaborations with a range of Scandinavia’s most impressive and influential musi- cians, among others Arne Domnerus, Svend Asmussen, Östen Warnebring, Jan Lundgren and ABBA put strong emphasis to her name and tell about quite an impressive career. MONTMARTRE CLASSIC DEXTER NIGHT KIRK LIGHTSEY – ALEX RIEL QUARTET Kirk Lightsey (piano / US), Alex Riel (drums / DK), Tomas Franck (tenor sax / SE), Thomas Fonnesbæk (bass / DK) Montmartre was Dexter Gordon’s club, no more no less. He loved playing here. Dexter’s time at Montmartre set the highest standards possible and one who carries Dexter’s legacy till this day is Alex Riel, Dexter’s friend and favorite drummer in Europe. When Dexter Gordon returned to the US in the 70’s, it was with Kirk Lightsey on piano, and it is unique that two of Dexter’s favourite musicians now have the opportunity to give us an evening inspired by him. Adding to the quartet is Tomas Franck, probably the European saxophonist who comes closest to Dexter’s incredible feeling and ability to tell a story with the melody in the center. Add to that Thomas Fonnesbæk, a most luminous exam- ple of NHØP’s musical heritage among the new generation of bassists. A classic Montmartre evening. TWO JAZZ MASTERS IN RARE DUO CONCERT KIRK LIGHTSEY - JESPER LUNDGAARD THE DUO Kirk Lightsey (piano / US), Jesper Lundgaard (bass / DK) Kirk Lightsey is one of the great pianists today; some say he is probably the last great post-bop piano player and he is also known as the superb accom- panist for the legendary Dexter Gordon. In Kirk’s playing you always find the melody in the center and he plays with both great energy and an engaging swing that maintains the listener’s attention. Together with Jesper Lundgaard, Kirk Lightsey is touring the major European jazz scenes and captivating old and new audiences with his remarkable music. Montmartre is next! One of Denmark’s finest bass players Jesper Bodilsen presents his most personal and heartfelt project to date, Short Stories for Dreamers. In these compositions and arrangements by Bodilsen, unspoken poetry and imaginary images blend together into a soundscape of short individual stories that are seperate yet related, just like when we dream. The tone is warm, open and inviting, disclosing places Bodilsen has been too, whilst at the same time the music is still beautifully rooted in Scandinavian soil. No matter if you are a jazz lover or you just like good music, this evening of a dream trip will be like fresh air to your ears. Already in the 50s he was part of the famous West Coast scene with musicians such as Chet Baker, Bill Holman and Art Pepper, with whom he also recorded several albums. After moving to New York for a while he continued on to Europe where he landed a Montmartre performance in the mid-60s with help from Stan Getz. "We came on after Bud Powell, so on our first night we played with him," recalls Herb Geller who ever since has been a sought-after soloist in both Europe and America. With him are 3 of Denmark’s finest musicians, who have among others played with Chet Baker and Stan Getz. It does not get much grander. BO STIEF / FREDRIK LUNDIN & PLAYGROUND 2011Bo Stief (bass / DK), Fredik Lundin (tenor saxophone / DK)+ new talents from the jazz playground 2011

Bo Stief is perhaps the greatest storyteller we have in Danish jazz. He man-ages like no other to combine the tradition of the legendary Montmartre era, of which he himself was an important part of in the 60’s, with today’s trends. To mark the occasion of receiving this year’s Ben Webster Prize during the Copenhagen Jazz Festival, he will play host together with Fredrik Lundin, and present a selection of new young talents, by inviting them to become part of the long Montmartre tradition of young and new playing with the experienced cats. This will be an evening of high class music and true to the Ben Webster spirit. Line-up will be announced on our website.

DANISH-SWEDISH SWING SUMMIT

CHRISTINA VON BÜLOW TRIOWITH JAN ALLAN Jan Allan, (trompet / SE), Christina Von Bülow, (alto sax / DK), Jacob Fischer, (guitar),Jens Skou Olesen, (bass / DK) Only a very few can make the classic jazz repertoire come alive as does Christina Von Bülow. Her exceptionally beautiful tone and extraordinary sense of melody make her a unique artist and very popular among many jazz fans. Christina Von Bülow elegantly combines the American jazz tradition with a Scandinavian lyrical vein, a trait she picked up from her mentor, Stan Getz. Yet she remains her very own. Looking to our neighbouring country Sweden, Christina von Bülow meets up with an old collaborator, fellow Scandinavian, the master trumpeteer Jan Allan. Together they create unbelievable beautiful moments that are hard to find other places in the world than at Montmartre.

A TRIBUTE CONCERT TO CLARK TERRY & BOB BROOKMEYER

Henrik Bolberg, (trumpet / DK), Steen Hansen, (trombone / DK, Anders Chico Lindvall, (guitar / SE), Graig Earle (bass / CA), Janus Templeton (drums / DK)

Clark Terry and Bob Brookmeyer was the legendary duo of the 60’s that took out time to play at their favorite club in New York just for the fun of it. This resulted in several recordings where the joy of playing and the strong melodies shined through. Henrik Bolberg and Steen Hansen is a similar duo; both great soloists, but as a team they demonstrate a truly superior swing. This will be an evening going straight into the bloodstream of those who love good arrange-ments and swinging jazz performed with humor and the joy of playing.

With a muscular tone, yet a lyrical phrasing saxophonist Kenny Garrett has captured not only audiences worldwide but also the respect of cool jazz legend Miles Davis who was often quoted saying: “There are a few young guys out there who are developing their own style. My alto player, Kenny Garrett, is one of them.” The legend list of Garrett’s music collaborations has continued ever since as well as placing himself at the top of the jazz world with his own projects. In contrast to his last Montmartre visit, this time Kenny Garrett presents a more acoustic set-up, though still with his signature eclectic and vibrant approach that will put our intimate jazz club on fire for sure!
