PRESIDENTS NOTES
On August 31st there was a Ribbon Cutting Caravan at ve new businesse
starting downtown at 9:00 a.m., then one in the middle of the community aMeMas opened as the operator of the Blue Devil Deli at KCK CommunitCollege, then two more on Leavenworth Road and a nal ribbon cutting late i
the day at Legends Toyota at Parallel and 435. There are several messages
those ve ribbon cuttings. First, the entrepreneur spirit is alive and well in KCK
Second, people know there is business to be done throughout the communityThird, most of these businesses are family owned or have melded different parof family businesses into them.
One of the businesses, an automotive repair shop on Leavenworth Road habeen a life-long dream of someone who had always worked for someone elsMeMas is the third operation of the third generation family owned businesAnd the team at Legends Toyota includes family members of the former Roge
Smith Toyota, a former long time KCK business.
Finally, a few days later I discovered a sixth ribbon cutting we should have donthat day. There is a new ofce on Parallel Parkway called Byers Manageme
ofce. This is a new/old business is the next step for long time architect Ra
Byers. Ray, a well know architect, was the principal of Byers, Gunn & Har
who retired from his practice after putting a stamp and look on many buildingnot only in KCK, but throughout the metropolitan area for many years.
Rays new business will be taking care of the properties he has owned andor managed for many years in KCK. Ray has shaped many parts of the city the way business is done, buildings are built, and people helped. He not only ra
a business for customers, but has given back as well in so many ways throughis church, Kiwanis, his efforts at Presbyterian Manor, and as a friend.
The ve new businesses are more than just a business; they are already a pa
of the community. They give back. They employ people and they are or arbecoming family. I can only think it is in great part because theyve followe
Ray Byers example and the one he continues to set in our community.
Congratulations to all of these new businesses! Thanks for being here an
being part of our business community!
A couple of other notes I want to share. First, we have some new leade
in our community to welcome Dr.. Doris Givens, new president at the KCKCommunity College, Randy Nyp, interim CEO at Providence Medical Centeand Mi Ah Parrish, new publisher for the Kansas City Star.
And in our own ofce, we said good-bye to long-time sales director Jan
Reed in June, welcomed BRAND new Director of Sales Shelby Rogers wh
began her duties the rst week of September, and will be bidding a sad farewe
to our Afternoon Receptionist Carolyn Robinson at the end of the month. Wwish Janet and Carolyn well and hope you will all assist Shelby as she workwith us to grow the KCK Chamber.

A New Approach to Worksite Wellness
How many times have employers heard about the benets of worksite wellness? What stops businesses from
starting a wellness program when they know it results in healthier and more productive employees? What preven
employees from participating in wellness initiatives or improving their health on their own?
For companies, the issue may be that they tried a weight-loss competition or walking program with minim
interest or results. For individuals, the problem is generally busy schedules, which lead to unused gym membership
and fast food meals.
Humana, the Chambers health plan partner, heard these challenges and launched a program that helps employe
take control of their health by identifying their risk factors,
supporting their goals and motivating them to adopt new
behaviors.
The program is called Humana Vitality, and it has a simple,
three-step approach:
1) Know Your Health To get healthier, employees spend time using the health measurement tools to bett
understand their current health.
2) Improve Your Health Employees use the web-based tools and vast network of wellness and tness suppo
partners to reach lifestyle and tness goals.
3) Earn Rewards Employees are rewarded for getting CPR certied, donating blood, exercising, or stoppin
tobacco use. Rewards include everything from movie tickets to travel.
Humana Vitality is different from other work site wellness programs because it offers more than 30 actions f
employees to improve their health status and earn rewards. Anyone can participate, even if they cannot spend hou
at the gym.
Each action is automatically uploaded to the Vitality system, which saves employees time, but it also ensure
monitoring is accurate. Individuals can see the direct link between their actions, health status and incentive
Incentives are selected by the employee and include music downloads, electronics, tness gear and vacatio
discounts.
Engaged employees can have a signicant impact on annual health costs. Individuals who did not participate sa
an increase in annual health costs of nearly 15 percent, while those engaged in Vitality witnessed a less than tw
percent increase. Plus, engaged employees have fewer doctors visits and lower costs associated with treatment
chronic conditions which can mean lower costs for employers.
For more information on Humana Vitality or other worksite wellness options, contact your health benets broke
If you dont have a health benets broker, call the Chamber at 913-371-3070 for a complete list of Chamb
member brokers participating in the health benets program.
