New Things: Looking Ahead as WWCCR Continues to Grow

by Debora Johnston

What a privilege to be a part of WWCCR as we celebrate 40 years of ministry in the Seattle Archdiocese. Sharon Fox, Board President, shared the history of our first 35 years as a ministry in the last issue of GLEANINGS. Well, the most recent five years have been full and blessed and the Holy Spirit is certainly moving. St. Peter Damian said it well, “as the soul is the life of the body, so the Holy Spirit is the life of our souls.” As we learn to be docile to the Spirit, the still, small voice guiding, directing and inspiring the ministry, we are constantly in awe at the glory of God made manifest in His people and His favor for WWCCR.

In 2012, a desire to reach out and bring healing in a fresh new way was conceived and the ministry of Dwelling Place began to take shape. The name “Dwelling Place” reminds us that we are all temples of the Holy Spirit and God dwells within each of us. After six months of spiritual formation under the direction of Misty Tougas, Mitch Roberts and Kerry McMahon, deepening team members’ practice

of the awareness of the presence of God, Dwelling Place Healing Nights launched at St. Stephen the Martyr parish in Renton. Then, in 2015, St. Pius X parish in Mountlake Terrace became the second site for these powerful encounters with the Father’s infinite love. The mission of Dwelling Place is rooted in the words Jesus prayed to the Father:

“Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven” (Matthew 6:9-10). The team seeks to create opportunities of encounter with the living God, both for themselves and for those coming to receive.

Where is the Lord leading us? Where are we going? How can we be ready to move in the way of the Spirit?

In July, twelve people from the NW traveled to Pittsburgh to celebrate with 7,000 other people at the Jubilee Conference, “Rivers of Living Water.” Michelle Moran used the river image from Ezekiel 47 to describe the unfolding of a worldwide move of the Holy Spirit that is calling us out into the deep water (where we must be fully surrendered to the flow of the current). She spoke of the present moment as an opportunity that leaves little time for delay. In her article in the Spring 2017 issue of Pentecost Today she wrote, “I believe the Holy Spirit is leading us in surprising ways. I believe he’s saying to us, ‘Be ready,’ and I believe he’s saying to us, ‘Be prepared.’ […] I believe the Lord is saying to us, ‘Think in bigger ways, ask my Spirit to expand your horizons.’ And I believe that the Lord is saying that the next few years are going to be years we could have never dreamed of. We don’t have a road map, my friends, this is very exciting.” What we do know is that we want to be in that place of faith where He leads us forward, in His ways, in His faith, and in His truth.

The Board of Directors began a time of discernment

over a year and a half ago to set a Strategic Plan for the next 10 years of WWCCR ministry. We hosted listening sessions that many people and key leaders attended. We shared the Plan with some priests who are close to WWCCR. Some trends in our discussions started to come to the forefront. All of this input was gathered together to form our current version of the Strategic Plan. We will be sharing the next steps with you in the next few months. Pray, pray, pray that each step is completely in harmony with the ways and truth of the Spirit.

Are we ready for the Lord to show us something new? We are getting things in place. We want to invite you to prepare with us for a mighty breakthrough in the Holy Spirit. We can miss it if we are distracted or

diverted. I have been praying the Surrender Novena and I invite you to join me. It is in a place of total surrender that the Holy Spirit will be able to move us into this new season, this new way of teaching and preaching about the kingdom. These are the important days of preparation as we prepare to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of WWCCR. We will be celebrating all year beginning on November

3rd and 4th. Look for a Special Anniversary Edition of GLEANINGS in October. You can register online now for this epic celebration! God bless you richly with His Holy Spirit in abundance! Pray often, “Jesus I surrender all to you, take care of everything!”

disease has been cured and confirmed through medical testing. Realizing God’s call is new every day, the team continues to grow, learn, share and invite others on the journey. If you feel called to this life-giving work of God, contact [email protected] for more information.

In October 2016, the next “new thing” came into view. It began as a desire to gather God’s people together, worship and give praise. With no other agenda in mind but to have our eyes and hearts focused on Christ, intercessors began praying into the vision and asking how this might play out. WWCCR would be coordinating the nights but we would also need a worship team to lead. I then attended a Dwelling Place formation night and was introduced to two missionaries, Gabby Herndon and Tess Magin, who were leading worship. Wow, such a powerful encounter! Seeking the heart of Christ through music seemed so natural to them. I knew God was setting the stage for something powerful. Then, in another “God encounter,” I met two more very talented musicians, Tony and Pat D’Angelo, who are brothers with a passion for Christ, the Church and worship! Through patient perseverance and abundant prayers, God paved the path and the meeting of these two groups convened. It was a holy, Spirit-filled afternoon of worship in the basement of a church and God was there. The musical group soon added a drummer, Trey Caldwell. After prayer, they decided on the name “Heights of Zion,” and they are currently recording their first album. Heights of Zion is responding to the call of God to serve and has been leading worship for the ministry of WWCCR. (If you are interested in learning more about this phenomenal group of musicians, you can contact them at: [email protected].) God is good! Next, the Spirit revealed the location: Immaculate Conception in Seattle. What would we call these nights? Simply, “Night of Worship.” The date, April 1st, would mark the first of what has become monthly Nights of Worship. God’s plans for His people are so much better than we can imagine.

Over the years, WWCCR has received many prophetic words for the ministry. Unsure really what to do with them, we waited. Always praying and discerning, asking God, “What is it that you’re telling us?” Over time it became clear: teaching would be an

intentional avenue God was leading the ministry toward. In the past, we have brought in speakers, teachers and leaders from around the world. At the same time, God was preparing local leaders Misty Tougas, Gloria Soto and myself, to step up and answer the call to teach, share and equip others on the spiritual gifts. In 1 Corinthians 14:1 it says, “Pursue love, but strive eagerly for the spiritual gifts, above all that you may prophesy.” We offered multiple teachings and workshops: “How to Pray a Prophetic Blessing,” a 12-week “Introduction to the Prophetic Gifts” and “Developing Your Prophetic

Gift.” Always with a hunger for more, we move onward seeking the face of the Lord and planning as the Spirit moves. The most up-to-date places to find classes currently being offered are through the WWCCR website, signing up for our weekly emails, and GLEANINGS. As we grow in the gifts

and understand the need to grow even more, we believe the words spoken by Jesus in John 14:12, “Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever believes in me will do the works that I do, and will do greater ones than these.” And so we press on.

“What’s coming next?” you might ask. More growing, learning, listening, teaching, and sharing! We believe that, at the foundational level of this ministry, in addition to baptism in the Holy Spirit, there is a call to “equip the holy ones for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ” (Ephesians 4:12).

In the coming year look for classes, workshops, and retreats on Called & Gifted, UNBOUND, Born of the Spirit, prophecy, words of knowledge and more.

We believe something big is happening in the Northwest and that WWCCR is a part of it. But more importantly, we want you to be a part of it, too. And by the way, when we refer to WWCCR we are collectively referring to all of God’s people in the Northwest touched by the work of the Lord happening in and through Western Washington Catholic Charismatic Renewal. Let’s all live intentional lives, docile to the Spirit, hungry for holy encounters, loving one another as Christ has loved us, growing in the gifts and watching God’s kingdom come on earth as it is in heaven! The best is yet to come!

In October 2016, the next “new thing”

came into view.

4 September/October 2017

Often when people share their testimony of how the Lord intervened in their life with a “Before and After” story, I find the dramatic shift in their story fascinating. It has a ring to it like a commercial: “Before, when I would wash my clothes, they would come out a dingy grey. Then, my friend introduced me to Ultra Grey Away and now my clothes are brighter than ever!” For some, this may definitely be the case in their experience of baptism in the Holy Spirit or their moment of conversion. For me, it has been a gradual unfolding like a beautiful flower with moments and movements of intense growth and quiet development.

I am the youngest of six children, fortunate to have been born into a family where faith, love, and prayer, along with service and concern for the poor, were integrated into daily life. This doesn’t mean we didn’t have our challenges, rough edges and sorrows. But it does mean that I knew about the Lord Jesus and grew in my personal relationship with him from a very young age.

Two of the growth moments for me where I felt the Lord’s grace and presence in profound ways occurred when I was a teenager in 1970 and again when I was a young mother in my early 30’s in the mid-1980’s.

As a teen, I went on a retreat with my youth group. I didn’t want to go on this retreat. I muddled my way through the weekend until Sunday morning when something extraordinary occurred. All of us were gathered in a cabin sitting on our sleeping bags around a low, makeshift altar. We were sleepily making our way through Mass. Suddenly, as the Eucharistic bread, Jesus, was held up for us, the room became filled with light emanating from the host! The energy in the room was electric and full of intense joy. I sat up tall and looked around to see if anyone else was experiencing this phenomenon, but everyone seemed to be maintaining their sleepy postures.

I recall that this intense presence stayed with me during a very difficult time of transition that followed for our family. It was a time that my dad was laid off from his job, our family sold most of our belongings and we moved to another city, in another state, where we started over with very little. I recall that there were times of great disappointment and grief, yet there was also an underlying peace and joy that remained. I remember singing songs of praise as I painted walls, while being alone in an old rental house that we were going to live in for a few months. It

was a time of great uncertainty for our family as well as a time of deep trust. As I entered into young adulthood, my thirst for knowledge of God deepened as I transitioned from wearing the faith of my parents to putting on the faith of my own response to God’s invitation.

As a young mother in my early thirties, I became concerned about my sister. She had experienced baptism in the Holy Spirit at a prayer meeting and it was really affecting her life. She was making some unexpected changes in her life. She was praying more, talking about Jesus, changing her career path, and seeking healing. It was all a bit much. But after a while, I responded to the invitation to “come and see” and I began to attend the prayer meeting too. I was drawn in by the familiarity of the Spirit of the Lord. The songs of praise and prayers for healing were an invitation to receive the great love and grace that Jesus has to offer us. And the invitation was not just to experience healing for ourselves but also to equip us to be witnesses and help others to come to know the grace and powerful presence of Jesus. Inner healing leads to action toward justice and mercy for ourselves, others and our world.

And so I became vulnerable enough to ask for prayer to also receive baptism in the Holy Spirit. The grace received is like fanning into flame the gift of God that we already received at our baptism. It is the same Spirit, yet with a new vigor. For me, it opened up prayer, Scripture, a thirst for the things of God, an increase in compassion and willingness to be used by God for healing and teaching. It expanded my desire for knowledge of God toward a deeper, personal experience and relationship with God. And it also increased my courage to act in accordance with the Gospel.

Hardships and sufferings come for all of us, yet joy and courage and healing is also available to us. I offer praise and gratitude to our God every day for the gift of presence and possibility, for the grace to participate and co-create with Jesus to live into the Gospel in our world. The gift of the Holy Spirit works through us, empowers and guides us, resides in us. Intercessory Prayer Network (IPN)

The Intercessory Prayer Network (IPN) is comprised of all who have offered to pray regularly for God’s will to be accomplished through the people and programs of WWCCR. We know that prayer changes things!

Please pray for God to bring about His desires through the work of preparation and the events you see in this newsletter, and also …

· for a joyful kickoff celebration of our 40th year as a ministry in November, and for fruitful clarity about how to steward our gifts and resources to fulfill our mission and serve the spiritual needs of the people of Western Washington.

· that the Unbound training bears great fruit in the Kingdom by equipping participants to pray with others to be released from fear, anger, and unforgiveness and step into their identity as beloved sons and daughters of God.

· for the ministry of Dwelling Place, that the power of the Holy Spirit is upon it in such extraordinary measure that people are awakened to their true identity in Jesus Christ, and experience the healing power of God’s miraculous presence physically, emotionally and spiritually.

· for the Board of Directors, staff, and volunteers of WWCCR.

WWCCR has been an incredible blessing in my life. I attended my first WWCCR conference at the Tacoma Dome in 1992. Someone came up to me with a Word of Knowledge which totally came true!

WWCCR sent me and three other priests to an incredible International Retreat for Priests in Ars, France. Words cannot describe that amazing experience.

I pray for a spirit of gratitude to fill our hearts as we celebrate 40 years and many more blessings from the Lord who is so generous in pouring out the Holy Spirit to those who ask for His gift.

WWCCR has been and continues to be a huge support and blessing to me as I

serve as a priest in the Archdiocese of Seattle.

Thank you!!!!
