Series 70 ePanel™
Maximize Reliability With ePanel™The LayerZero Series 70 ePanel provides a means to distribute
power in a selective trip coordinated; safe manner.
Inspired by NFPA-70E, the Series 70 ePanel™ remote power panel
is ideally suited for today’s high density always-on data-processing
environments.
The Series 70 ePanel increases reliability in two ways:
• Utilizes Finger-Safe Panel Board
• Provides Selective Trip Coordination Up to 25kAIC
With its SafePanel™ advanced design, there are no live parts
exposed when the deadfront is open and you can add a branch
breaker safely. Selective tripping eliminates the catastrophic
problems associated with the tripping of the panel board
main breaker in the event of a fault in the distribution system
downstream of a panel board branch breaker.
The panel board of the ePanel is designed for maximum
operator safety with its fully enclosed molded plastic bus and
non-conducting screws. Designed for wall-mounted application,
all feeder and branch connections can be installed & thermal
scanned fully front of the Series 70 ePanel.
Panel board section has a Category 0 PPE requirement, per the
requirements of NFPA-70E

LayerZero Designs For Long-Term Performance
The Series 70 ePanel is constructed to be strong and exceptionally reliable, both
electrically and mechanically.
Designed for safe and easy maintenance, the shape of the SafePanel™ on the ePanel
significantly reduces the probability of operator error, helping to ensure maximum uptime.
Operators are less prone to make mistakes when working with a finger-safe panel. Design
details such as breaker bolts that are not live and insulated buswork also help increase
reliability by putting less stress on operators.
As a part of standard manufacturing quality assurance, each branch breaker undergoes
branch breaker undergoes one controlled thermal trip and two controlled instantaneous
trips to ensure that the branch breaker performance is within design tolerance.
Maximize Reliability With Selective Trip Coordination
The trend toward higher power density designs in modern data centers has created new difficulties in establishing proper circuit
breaker coordination. Higher capacity power distribution transformers with lower per-unit impedance has elevated fault current
levels and placed increasing coordination pressure on all downstream protective devices.
Main circuit breakers in series with traditional zero crossing branch circuit breakers may not permit proper selective trip coordination
at elevated fault current levels.
Selective trip operation via proper coordination is achievable at very high prospective fault current levels by using fault current
limiting (fast acting) branch circuit breakers.
Current limiting branch circuit breakers substantially ease the coordination design process, improve overall system reliability and
yield measurable uptime improvement for the mission critical facility end user.

True mission critical performance is achieved when ePanel
components are designed to trip selectively; AND have the
property of fault current-limiting or high-speed tripping.
Fast Acting Circuit Breakers
The circuit breakers in the Series 70: ePanel are plug-in, high-speed, fault current limiting, 25kAIC; designed for selective tripping. A
bolted fault on the output of one branch circuit breaker is interrupted in less than 4 milliseconds. This fast tripping action limits the
magnitude of the fault current; ensuring that the main breaker does not trip. Consequently, the other circuits in the panel boards
remain unaffected.
The voltage interruption on the main bus is less than a quarter cycle.
The panel board designed with fault withstand rating of 25kA for robust performance in a dynamic environment.
• Computer loads cannot
withstand an outage greater
than 20 milliseconds (roughly
1.25 electrical cycles), per ITIC.
• When a fault occurs downstream of
a branch breaker, it impinges zero-
voltage on the main bus of the panel
board until the breaker is able to trip
open and clear the fault.
• A conventional zero crossing breaker draws the entire available fault current for a half-cycle. This can result in the trip of the feeder breaker; resulting in a wholesale outage of the
panel board
• This means that the panel board
main bus experiences an outage
that loads cannot tolerate before
the fault is cleared.

An arc can form as two live conductors are separated – such as the removal of a circuit breaker from a panel board.
The SafePanel design ensures that a potential arc would be contained in the connection well.

To support the total needs of an increasingly information centric critical power distribution environment, the Series 70 ePanel may be optionally equipped with a branch circuit level and panel board main circuit power monitoring. The Panel Board Branch Power Monitor allows site management to monitor power consumption. This provides information that is increasingly vital to the revenue model of many data processing units.
In addition to measuring the main bus voltage of the panel board and delivering Waveform Capture upon anomaly of main bus voltage, the power monitor measures the following parameters for each of the 42 branch circuits in a given panel board:
