Sermon Topic: “Why Listen to Him?”

Sermon text: John 10:14-21

Last Thursday, May 7, I had the privilege to participate in a Zoom Webinar, sponsored by many

of our local hospitals titled “Race & Place: COVID-19, A Candid Conversation with our African

American Community, Dispelling the Myths and Misconceptions.” This Webinar was a

reminder that there are many voices clamoring for our time and attention – leaving us at times

questioning who should we listen to. (If you are interested in viewing the Webinar click on this

In Jesus day, there were some Jews who challenged those who received Him, with the question –

“Why Listen to Him?” The sermon this week invites us to reaffirm why it is important for us as

people of faith in a world clamoring for our time and attention to listen to Jesus through His

Word in the Bible. Why Listen to Him? Join us as we debunk myths and misconceptions that

have led many away from Jesus and faith in God.

First Reading: Acts 17:16–31 (Paul in Athens)

Epistle Reading: 1 Peter 3:13–22 (Suffering for Christ)

Holy Gospel: John 14:15–21 (The promise of the Holy Spirit)

Greetings people of God! Though our lives are dominated by the Pandemic COVID-19, The New Life Version

of the Bible offers us Acts 17:28a, with these words; “It is in Him that we live and move and keep on living.”

The more familiar New International Version Bible translate Acts 17:28a in this way, “For in him we live and

move and have our being.” This Good News reminds us that no matter what (Pandemic or otherwise) we are

confronted with as God’s children our lives are secured by the presence and power of the Lord that keeps and

sustains us in life and even death. When the Apostle Paul wrote these words he was seeking to help believers

and skeptics center their faith and lives on Him who is the author and creator of all – our sovereign God and not

to allow the power of sin and secular things to confuse and confound them. May every day that God give us be

filled with the simple and profound news that in Him, not the Coronavirus we “live, move and have our being.”

Drive-in Worship and Holy Communion

Thank you to everyone who came out last Sunday, May 10th for our Mother’s Day worship with Holy Communion. We were truly blessed by God through our worship and fellowship – as we practiced social distancing from our cars. The use of the FM radio transmitter allowed me and others to engage you in the comfort of your vehicles. This Monday, May 18, 2020 the Board of Trustees will meet to help us determine how often each month we will offer drive-in worship and Holy Communion; once or two, three or four times each month? If you would like to weigh in on the decision, please contact Pastor Wiggins, John-Curtis Cogdell, Board Chair, or leave a message on the church office phone. May God bless all of our efforts as we strive to be faithful to Him and edify one another.

Although I/we do not have a specific date, week or

month when we will be able to return to our normal

(or should I say new-normal) way of worshipping,

gathering and serving…I am thankful to announce

that we are putting together a “SPLC Re-opening

Team.” This team will help assure that when the time is right we will be able to

open with all the proper safety protocols in places.

Ms. Evelyn Story has agreed to serve as the coordinator of the re-opening

team. If you are interested in helping or serving please contact her at 904-955-

be a part of this important team in your prayers as we anticipate the day when

SPLC Helping Those Who Hurt During COVID-19

Thank-you for your Donations to Lutheran Social Services of Jacksonville

COVID-19 has caused many people through no fault of their own to be without basic necessities like food, clothing and shelter. Many are unemployed and uncertain about their future. But thanks be to God, that you, and other members and friends have generously given so that we can help make a difference through

Lutheran Social Services (LSS) and Clara White Mission. Last week we sent a donation to Clara White Mission and this coming week we will send our donations to LSS. May God continue to bless us so that we can help others in their time of need.
