Michaelmas Term

Merton College Chapel
Merton College was founded by Walter de Merton on 14
September 1264. Worship has been offered in the College Chapel
for over seven hundred years. Today the Chapel is home to a
lively and diverse Christian community which continues this
faithful offering of worship with daily services during term.
Visitors are welcome to join members of the College at all our
services.
The Chapel is part of the Church of England, within the world-
wide Anglican Communion, and the Archbishop of Canterbury
is the College’s Visitor. All those who are communicant
members of their own church are welcome to receive Holy
Communion with us.
As part of the 750th celebrations, most of this year’s Sunday
evening preachers are Mertonians. The Revd Dr Nicholas
Cranfield (19 October) read Modern History at Merton, and also
completed a DPhil in Ecclesiastical History. Formerly Dean of
Chapel of Selwyn College, Cambridge, he has been Vicar of All
Saints’, Blackheath, in the Diocese of Southwark, since 1999.
The Revd Professor Alister McGrath (26 October) was a Senior
Scholar at Merton from 1976-1978, combining research for his
DPhil in Chemistry with study for the Final Honours School in
Theology. He has held academic posts in Cambridge, London
and Oxford. Earlier this year he became the first Andreas Idreos
Professor in Science and Religion at Oxford. Sir Martin Taylor
(26 October) became the fiftieth Warden of Merton College in
2010, having been previously Professor of Pure Mathematics at
Manchester University and a Vice-President of the Royal Society.
The Revd Mark Eminson (9 November) matriculated in 1999. He
read Modern History at Merton and stayed on for an MSt. Mark
3
was the College’s first MCR welfare representative and was
confirmed in the College Chapel. Having served his curacy in
East Grinstead, he has been Vicar of St Thomas à Becket,
Pagham, in the Diocese of Chichester, since 2012.
A twenty-four hour Peace Vigil will be held on 10 and 11
November. It will begin with a shared meal at 7.00pm on
Monday 10 November in the MCR and conclude with the
Requiem Eucharist for Armistice Day. If you would like to be
involved, please email [email protected].
The College Choir sings on Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays,
its music enriching our worship. Members of College and
Friends of the Choir can purchase the Choir’s recordings from
the Chapel Administrator ([email protected]).
Copies are also available from the Porters’ Lodge. An important
feature of the 750th anniversary is the performance of pieces
commissioned for the Merton Choirbook. This term sees the first
performances of a number of Choirbook commissions. We are
very grateful to those whose generosity has made this possible.
Please contact me or Ben Nicholas if you would like to support
this exciting project.
The Chapel supports a number of charities. Our collections this
term will be donated to the Oxford Food Bank
(www.oxfordfoodbank.org), the Embleton Parish Church
Development Project, the Oxford Parent Infant Project
(www.oxpip.org.uk), and the Oxfam Iraq Crisis Appeal.
