The Country Quilterie Carriage House Square, Office and Re-tail Complex located at 2785 Route 115, Effort, PA 18330 has been hon-ored for being one of only seventy featured sites, in the entire Unit-ed States and Canada (and one of only six in the State of Pennsyl-vania) for it’s unique and interesting design, function and use of green space “designed with nature and for people”, in the new-est edition of “Rural By Design”, a detailed reference guide book for architects, plan-ners, and everyone in-volved in planning the towns and open spaces
in America. Written by renowned author and lecturer, Randall Arendt, this reference book is used in librar-ies and universities throughout the United States. This book is rec-ommended for “the essential planning li-brary” by the Ameri-can Planning Society and is required read-ing for the AICP exam. Mr. Arendt traveled throughout the Unit-ed States and Canada, gathering research for this book, and nar-rowed his selection down to just seventy properties, includ-ing Carriage House
Square! Mr. Arendt’s “Rural By Design” reference book features five photographs and two pages of text on Car-riage House Square, an eight unit Office and Retail complex, featuring six units in the main bulding (in the front) and two units in the second building (set back, and to the right of the parking field, which is located behind the main building). Designed and
owned by Arthur and MaryAnn Kwant of Effort, Carriage House Square fea-tures a rear parking field, creekside deck (overlooking Pohopo-co Creek), with park benches, picnic tables and photo spots, plus several out build-ings, including San-ta’s Workshop, the Woodcarver’s Cottage and the lde Quilding School. The main building’s six units are occupied by Pennsylvania State
House of Representa-tive Jack Rader (176th; Legislative District), Occasion Reflections (locally made crafts
and gifts), the Quilting Academy (Quilting School), Be You Tiful (girl’s day spa), Cox Claims Group (inter-
national insurance claims office), Effort-less Communications (Motorola business Continued on Page 3
The CountyryQuilterie
Cont. From Page 2two-way radios), and Fairhaven Properties (residential apart-ment, condo and town home rentals) The second build-ing’s two units is oc-cupied by the Coun-try Quilterie (fabrics, quilts, quilting sup-plies and home decor), and Carolina Quilt-works (online fabrics, patterns, quilts and quilted accessories). For fifteen years, Santa’s Workshop,
at Carriage House Square, opened it’s doors every Thanks-giving weekend to the local children and their families, and were greeted by Santa and Mrs. Claus who listened to their Christ-mas wish list, posed for pictures, and gave each child a special little gift. (Mrs. Claus was owner MaryAnn Kwant’s mother, Anna Weber of Gilbert, PA). For seventeen years, Carriage House Square held the larg-est Arts and Crafts
Festival in the Pocono Mountains, three times a year, on Me-morial Day, Labor Day and Columbus Day weekends. This huge Festival, with over one-hundred twen-ty-five crafters, from all over the United States and Canada, featured live music, live demonstrations, delicious Pennsylva-
nia specialty foods, like Philly cheese steaks and funnel cakes, and live en-tertainment. Hosted by owners Art and MaryAnn Kwant, the festival drew thou-sands of visitors to the Pocono Mountains, from New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Delaware, and boosted sales of local
merchants, eateries, gas stations and lodg-ings.

Founded in 1989, Pennsylvania MENTOR is a leading home and community-based human services provider serving individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities, as well as emotional, behavioral or mental health challenges. We offer a range of innovative programming to enhance the lives of children and adults in our communities. Life sharing Through Family Living, Therapeutic Foster Care, Respite Services, and Autism Services are a few of our services. We are located throughout Pennsylvania including Brodheadsville, Pittston and Allentown. What is a Mentor? Mentors are independent contractors who open their hearts and their homes to care for a child, adolescent or adult in need. With the support of a specialized team of health and human service professionals, Mentors become trusted guides, tutors and advocates for the individuals with whom they live. Who do Mentors care for? Individuals receiving services include people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, children and adolescents with emotional or behavioral challenges, children with medically complex needs, and court-involved youth. Why Mentors? Our philosophy, which has proven successful for nearly 30 years, is to provide supports to individuals in the least restrictive, most natural and normalized setting possible. For many, this setting is a Mentor home. Who can become a Mentor? Mentors do not conform to any standard profile. They represent a wide range of racial and ethnic groups, skills, education levels, neighborhood settings and family arrangements. One constant among Mentors, however, is their commitment to the well being and personal growth of the individuals they serve. Right now, throughout your community and across Pennsylvania, thousands of children need a warm, safe home and a caring Mentor to guide them. Become a Mentor Foster Parent and you will begin a wonderfully rewarding experience. You will make a positive difference in your community and feel the pride, which comes from helping others. And you will form a lasting relationship, with an individual whose life you helped shape. Call Megan at 877-619-7711 ext 35.

St. Luke’s Universi-ty Health Network has broken ground for the new St. Luke’s Hospi-tal-Monroe Campus, adjacent to Wigwam Road and Route 611, in Bartonsville. This will be the first new hospital in Monroe County in 100 years. Joining members of St. Luke’s leadership team were state and local officials, region-al business leaders, Monroe County phy-
sicians, members of the community, sup-porters and friends. Officials spoke of the new hospital and St. Luke’s commitment to enhance the health care experience in the region. Dr. Charles Saun-ders, Chairman of St. Luke’s Universi-ty Health Network’s Board of Trustees, led the celebration for the milestone so import-ant to St. Luke’s and

Monroe County. “St. Luke’s has been bless-ed by the strong sup-port of people in the community and today is no exception. I feel privileged to witness another tremendous outpouring of com-munity support as we break ground for the seventh hospital in the St. Luke’s University Health Network. As a physician, I am partic-
ularly delighted that it is the physicians in this community that asked St. Luke’s to build a hospital where they could deliver a new standard in the practice of medicine. They have played a key role in the design and organization of this new hospital,” Saunders said. St. Luke’s is invest-ing $80 million into
the 180,000-square foot hospital that will be easily accessed from I-80, Route 33 and Route 611. The hos-pital will have four stories, 108 private pa-tient rooms including 12 beds for critical care patients, a large and efficient emergency room, helipad, oper-
ating rooms, a cardi-ac catheterization lab and the most modern diagnostic technology. The campus, which is nestled in a beautiful, natural setting, will in-clude a large fountain and walking trails. The hospital is expect-ed to open in the Fall of 2016.
St. Luke’s Hospi-tal-Monroe Campus will offer patients some of the world’s most cutting-edge medical technolo-gies to diagnose and treat disease, thanks, in part, to St. Luke’s long-standing clinical relationship with GE Continued on Page 12

Page 11Healthcare. St. Luke’s has been an interna-tional show site for GE Healthcare for more than 15 years. “I would like to end my remarks by saying ‘thank you’ to all those that have helped make today possible,” said Anderson. “The list would be quite long if I thanked people individually, so I will focus on groups. The first group that saw the wisdom in con-structing this hospital is the local group of physicians we view as our partners. The second group is our Board of Trustees
who had the vision to endorse this project and who gave their approval to finance it. And finally, nothing can be done without the cooperation of the regulatory agencies, elected officials and the Stroud Township Planning Commission and Board of Supervi-sors. We thank them for all of their support and confidence.
About St. Luke’s University Health
Network St. Luke’s is com-prised of six hospitals, including St. Luke’s University Hospital – Bethlehem, St. Luke’s Allentown Campus, St. Luke’s Anderson Campus (Bethlehem
Township), St. Luke’s Miners Campus (Coaldale), St. Luke’s Quakertown Campus, all in Pennsylvania, and St. Luke’s Warren Campus in Phillips-burg, NJ. St. Luke’s H o s p i t a l - M o n r o e Campus will be the seventh hospital in St. Luke’s University Health Network.
St. Luke’s Universi-ty Health Network is a nonprofit, regional, fully integrated, na-tionally recognized Network providing services at more than 200 sites in Lehigh, Northampton, Car-bon, Schuylkill, Bucks, Montgomery, Berks and Monroe counties in Pennsylvania and

In 1869, Dr. Brown’s Celery Tonic went on sale. The drink consisted of soda water and crushed celery seed. This started a celery craze in the late 19th century that included celery-flavored soft drinks, celery gum, celery soup and elixir of celery.

Spring Is here
Spring is just around the corner, a time when homeowners s tar t thinking about mak-ing improvements and repairs to their homes. Maintaining and/or repairing our homes should be a priority; otherwise what may be a minor repair could turn into a costly proj-ect. That small roof leak could turn into a ceil-ing repair. Missing siding could lead to rotten wood on wall areas, missing sof-fit and fascia will also lead to rotted wood and a place for bees to nest. Missing or faulty gutters and down-spouts could lead to water in basements and crawl spaces. Old worn out win-dows are costly when it comes to heating and cooling your home, same with doors. Replacing or repair-ing problem areas in your home is cost effec-tive and can give you peace of mind. Spring is just around the corner, now is the time to make those home improvements
you may have put off, act now and avoid more costly repairs in the future. If you have any ques-tions please feel free to give me a call. William Buskirk Home Repair, (570) 992-6401 or (610) 390-9696. Please see my ad in this publication.

Page 18 a licensed plumber. Replace: For old or inefficient fixtures that are not easily repaired, replace them with Wa-terSense-labeled mod-els. Toilets, faucets and
household leaks. That is the amount of water used by more than 11 million homes every year! Leaks can be a real drain on resources and occur in a num-ber of places at home, including faucets, showerheads, toilets,
and outdoor spigots and irrigation sys-tems. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) WaterSense® program, common household leaks can also add 10 percent to a family’s water bill. Finding and fixing leaks to save money and water does not have to be difficult. Just follow three sim-ple steps: check, twist and replace. Check: Look at your water meter (usually outside your house) before and after two or
more hours when no water is being used, perhaps while your family is at work or school. If the number has changed, there is likely a leak. To check for silent toilet leaks, add a few drops of food coloring to your toilet tank and wait 10 minutes before flushing. If the color appears in the bowl before you flush, the toilet flapper probably needs to be replaced. Twist: Remedy drip-ping pipes, fixtures or hoses by twisting a wrench to tighten the
connections. If need-ed, twist pipe tape around shower fixture or hose connections to seal them. Teach kids
to turn faucets and showers all the way off, and check wash-ers and valves for per-sistent drips. If you’re
not the “do-it-your-self” type or you have a bigger leak on your hands, you can consultContinued on Page 19
showerheads that earn the WaterSense label are independently cer-tified to use at least 20 percent less water and perform as well as or better than standard models. You’ll stop those nasty leaks and realize even more wa-
ter savings in the pro-cess. These water- and money-saving prod-ucts are available in a variety of styles and prices; look for the WaterSense label on boxes or websites of your favorite plumb-ing brand. Following these simple steps could
save the average fam-ily more than 10,000 gallons of water each year, or the amount of water it takes to wash 270 loads of laundry! For ideas and events during Fix a Leak Week, March 16 to 22, visit www.epa.gov/watersense/fixaleak.
The tradition of using small candles to light a Christmas tree is thought to date back to the mid-17th Century.

(NAPSA)-If your house is like most in America today, you and your family cre-ate up to 40 pounds of dust a year, just through everyday living. In addition, high temperature and humidity can also in-crease concentrations of some pollutants. So can not getting in enough outdoor air,

Your Wealth In addition to bet-ter air, clean ducts can mean saving money and energy. Accord-ing to the U.S. Depart-ment of Energy, 25 to 40 percent of the en-ergy used for heat_ing or cooling a home is
which can happen, es-pecially with modern homes designed to minimize air “leaks.” Through normal occupation in a home, people generate a great deal of contam-inants and air pollut-ants, such as dander, dust and chemicals. These are pulled into the HVAC system and recirculated sev-eral times a day. Over
time, this causes a buildup of contami-nants in the ductwork.
Your Health Dirty ducts can har-bor contaminants that could cause serious problems for people with respiratory prob-
lems, autoimmune disorders or allergies. Health effects from indoor air pollutants may include irritated eyes, nose and throat, as well as headaches, dizziness and fatigue. Symptoms of asthma,
hypersensitivity pneu-monitis and humidifi-er fever may also come from exposure to some indoor air pollutants. To protect you from this pollution, your heating and cooling system acts as the
lungs of your home. The system takes air in and breathes air out. A good rule of thumb: If your ducts look dirty, they probably are and should be inspected by a reputable, certiContinued on Page 21
wasted. Contaminants in the heating and cooling system cause it to work harder and wear out sooner. Even with filters, the heating and cooling system still gets dirty through normal use. A clean system uses less energy for more cost effectiveness.
Who Can Help A good way to get your ducts proper-
ly cleaned is to have them done by a pro-fessional who belongs to NADCA, a trade as-sociation of companies in the HVAC inspec-tion, maintenance and restoration industry that have signed the NADCA Code of Eth-ics and invested time and resources into in-dustry-related train-ing and education. Members possess general liability insur-
ance and will clean and restore your heating and cooling system in accordance with NADCA stan-dard and guidelines.

(NAPSA)-Finding an auto repair shop you can trust can be a challenge. Here are
three warning signs to watch for on your next trip to the mechanic. • While no one likes to be overcharged, be-ware of estimates that are well under market rate. This can be a sign the mechanic is using

low-quality or even used parts. Some me-chanics use lowball es-timates to lure you in for additional repairs that they will tack on later. • Automotive tech-nology is rapidly evolving and some shops fail to keep up. Without up-to-date diagnostic tools, a mechanic could Continued on Page 25

Page 24misdiagnose your problem, which means you’ll pay for unneces-sary repairs that don’t even fix your original problem. • If a mechanic employs scare tac-tics or treats you in a condescending way, move on. A reputable mechanic will take the time to explain your options just as a doctor guides you to make the right deci-
sion for your health. Fortunately, there’s a free service called RepairPal that can help consumers find a trustworthy local mechanic. RepairPal independently certi-fies auto repair shops nationwide for supe-rior training, quality tools, fair pricing stan-dards and a minimum 12-month/12,000-mile warranty. RepairPal also pro-vides car owners with a tool that brings transparency to repair costs-the RepairPrice
Estimator. Cited as a resource by Con-sumer Reports, AOL Autos and Cars.com, this patented calcu-lator generates fair price quotes based on the user’s automo-bile, location, and the service requested. All
mechanics in the Re-pairPal Certified shop network honor these estimates to give con-sumers peace of mind that they’ll never be overcharged. To learn more, visit www.RepairPal.com/estimator.

June is National Trails month with Saturday, June 6, being designated as National Trails Day. To promote area trails, Lehigh Township Rails to Trails will be having displays in area libraries to provide information about these trails. Trail maps will be displayed and brochures concerning a variety of trails will be available. The schedule for these displays is as follows:
Celebrate Area Trails!May 26-June 1:Northampton
Members of LTRT will be available to discuss the current status of and future work on area trails Saturdays, from 10 am to 2 pm, at each library. On June 6th, weather permitting, LTRT will be present at the Slatington Trailhead from 9 AM to 2 PM, in celebration of National Trails Day. Walking and biking
on trails both promote healthy living. The creation of trails also helps to protect green space and creates environmental awareness. We look
forward to seeing you at one of these events. For additional information, call 610 767-0676. You can also visit us on Facebook at LTR2T.
The mind’s first step to self-awareness must be through the body.

You’ll learn the real truth about what is real nutrition in this 1½ hour seminar.
(is Your Supplement Company Part of The Problem & What You May Not Know about Them)The most powerful nutritional on earth called Soul and just 1 serving is equal to 20 servings
of fruits and green leafy veggies.
Chronic inflammation Costs Americans Millions!
3 Servings of Omega 3, 6, 9’s from seed which is 20 to 30 times as potent as any juice, extract, oil, etc.Studies from Maryland, Minnesota, ill and Jefferson Hospital Universities provide Soul is 281x more
effective than aspirin for inflammation, which is the cause of all disease, cancer, illness, arthritis pain, etc.Suffering from arthritis for more than 20 years, i no longer use ibuprofen, naproson, or aspirin!
Since Soul is all natural, it actually helps reverse issues like gird, acid reflux, iBS, gout, fibromyalgia, etc. FISH OIL IS HARMFUL! (n.e. Journal of Medicine Study).
Most over the counter vitamins and fish oil make the blood acidic.Soul is a real parent essential oil from seed. its DNA works.
