Education has never been more visible an issue than it is today. Currently more and more people are staying on at school postGCSE, and the Government’s target of 50% of school leavers to go on to further education, has resulted in the continuingneed for better facilities.

Along with all stakeholders in this sector, it is our aim to create inspirational learning environments, which not only makestudents want to learn, but also produces an environment where teachers are proud to teach.

We aim to:/ Work collaboratively with our customers to achieve mutual benefits/ Develop a culture of openness, trust and communication/ Ensure minimal disruption to curriculum delivery during the building phase/ Incorporate construction and M&E activities into curriculum delivery through demonstrations, site visits,

coursework opportunities and where appropriate, work placements/ Consult with stakeholders during all stages of the programme/ Care for the environment and the local community

Lifelong learning is a realityWe are excited about the difference we can make to the lives ofyoung people, and others working and living in the local community.

Employing theexperts“Within the Education Sector, a number of complex procurementroutes, coupled with the need for a supply chain that truly understandsthe transformational education requirements, highlighted the necessityfor expertise in this sector. “The education of our children couldn’t be more important than it is today. We have seen how the world’s financial climate can change in a matter ofdays, having an immediate effect on the employment market. We shouldtherefore encourage our children to get the education that they deserveand become prepared for the world of employment.”

New investment, new ways of working, new demands on everyone’s time. Andmost of all, a requirement for new andrefurbished facilities.

Putting together a team to deliver a newbuild or refurbishment project successfully isyet another challenge, and one which youcannot afford to get wrong. And whom youselect as a building services provider is oneof the key elements in the whole process.

You need people who understand yourneeds. Who understand that budgetsmust be adhered to. That quality mustbe guaranteed.

You need people who have done thisbefore. Who understand. Who will befocussed on just one thing - your needs.

Our experience of working in this sectortypifies our strategy of specialising in chosenmarkets where we have developed a firstclass reputation for delivering qualityproducts and services to a select range ofclients. Our track record speaks for itself.

Working in theEducation Sectoris a challenging, rewarding andinspiring area inwhich to operate,providingever-increasingopportunitiesto be innovative.

Primary and early years

We’re giving children thebest possible start

Enabling children to reach their full potential beginsin earnest at Key Stage 1, and the DCSF goal is toprovide ‘excellence and enjoyment for every child’.

If you improve school buildings and do away withthe ‘mend and make do’ culture, teachers canconcentrate on their pupils instead of dealingwith problems concerning the building itself.

"Working on a project in the Education Sectoris always a great pleasure - as it is thesepremises that can help shape the futureof today's children. Harrowgate Hill is partof a very special group of schools and theentire project team were delighted whenit was handed over to the client earlyand on budget!"

Secondary schools and academiesWe are committed to reducing carbon emissions andmaking the most of sustainable features to help protectthe environment. Notably, we are able to study energyusage, use rainwater for flushing toilets, use alternativesources of energy, as well as using recycled materialsfor construction.

At SES we consider the design of buildings in theongoing drive to improve the services for teachers andpupils alike. Wider corridors, toilet blocks near toclassrooms (possibly unisex) and staff roomsstrategically located to allow for passive supervision, along with the reduction in bullying are just a few ofthe ‘thinking’ processes we go through.

SES has been involved in BSF from its infancy, delivering one of the first schools within the BSFpathfinder. This early learning has provided an excellentplatform for delivering future schemes.

Here you will find a combination of sustainable energysystems designed to suit each individual project. Thisallows us to develop BREEAM excellent rated schoolswhilst reducing carbon emissions by up to 60%.

Working closely with the whole design team is essentialin order to achieve the aspirations of the programme, whilst still achieving BB101 strict requirements.

Design for fire strategy, acoustics, security access andlighting all play a major part in the successful delivery ofeducation facilities, especially when consideringextended community use.

BSF is more than just a building programme; its aim isto create learning environments that inspire all youngpeople to unlock hidden talents and reach their fullpotential, and to provide teachers with 21st centuryplaces of work, providing access to facilities that canalso be used by all members of the local community.

“Tong High School provides its pupils withoutstanding facilities and opportunities tolearn. SES has been integral in building theinfrastructure of what is truly a significantachievement for the BSF scheme.”

“Darlington Education Village was the first of its kind ever to be built in England, bringing primary, secondary and special needs onto one campus.

SES was part of the project team, working with Kajima, responsible for alldomestic services. Now the school has been operational for a few years we

are able to fully appreciate the contributions that SES made.”Dame Dela Smith | Executive Director | Darlington Education Village

Special educational needs

Page 11: SES Education

At SES we are sympathetic to, and experienced in, special educationalneeds, whether it be in mainstream or S.E.N. facilities

Environmental services areparticularly important whenconsidering the comfort andwellbeing of children in everyfacility:

Acoustics: the transfer of noisebetween classrooms as well asexternal noise and reverberationwithin rooms can have an effect onchildren with sensory impairmentsor autism.

Lighting and Daylight:requirements could include lightinglevels that enhance sight and are

free of shadow and reflections, asthey can change the mood of aspace through dimming whilstremaining flicker free.

Heating Systems: care andattention must be paid whenplanning the heating in all schools, with particular emphasis in S.E.N.For example, under-floor heating is agood provider of ambient heating, but is not practical if air changesoccur due to frequently openingdoors. It can also provide excessiveheat for large matted areas wherechildren are sitting for long periods.

Temperature requirements alsochange for differing disabilitiesand S.E.N.

Ventilation: we appreciate thatventilation should be considered atthe same time as acoustics andheating. For example, some systemscould be particularly distracting forcertain pupils and it may be arequirement to use low noisesystems.

CollegesParticipation in education and training at age 16plus isdramatically increasing and with this brings the need to providehigher standards and greater choice of 6th form colleges. Many of the goals and aspirations of secondary schools aremirrored in colleges. These include good lighting, ventilation andthe use of sustainable technologies to achieve BREEAM excellent.

“This fast tracked project was handed over to theclient at the end of March 2009. This was a majorachievement for us, in terms of supply chainmanagement, as it involved co-ordinating more than100 nationwide suppliers to deliver products to sitewithin very tight timescales. We’re extremelypleased with the end result.”
