RABBI’S COLUMN:

Rabbi Peggy de Prophetis

Many of you are still enjoying summer vacation. I like the word

“vacation.” It strikes me that it’s a time when we vacate some of our

responsibilities at work or to family. We may vacate the place where we

normally live for some place more carefree. It may be a time to leave the

old familiar and make new discoveries. If you are still in vacation mode,

enjoy it, but come back to us ready to give a good, strong welcome to this coming Jewish year.

This period of the Yamim Nora’im, Days of Awe, will begin when we greet the month of Elul on the

evening of August 31. Elul begins the 40-day run-up to the end of Yom Kippur. In preparation for

the High Holy Days, we blow the shofar every morning in shul except on Shabbat. According to

Jewish tradition, the letters that form the name of the month ELUL stand for Ani Le-dodi Ve-dodi

Li, “I am my beloved and my beloved is mine” (Song of Songs 6:3). The Sages took this verse to

describe the unique loving, close relationship between God and Israel.

On Selichot evening, usually the Saturday night before Rosh Hashanah, we will say some

penitential prayers, prayers that are commonly said late at night and early in the morning

throughout the month. There will be a short service and a movie with a theme related to the season.

There has been a lot of turmoil and change in our larger world this past year, a subject I will address

in my sermons. There have been changes in our individual lives, some good, some difficult that we

are trying to accommodate either by action or acceptance. As a religious community we have

grown with new members, both Jews by birth and Jews by choice. Our congregation is like an

orchestra, many different instruments, sometimes playing in unison, sometimes in counterpoint,

but out of this mix comes a beautiful Jewish symphony. We learn by listening to each other and

enjoy spiritual uplift from the music we make as we pray together.

As the new year 5780 begins, let us open ourselves to our potential to grow and develop; let us go

on vacation. Let us use this time of vacating our usual routines by joining together as a community

at Beth Sholom to repair what is broken in our lives and to create what is missing. May our search

for wholeness bring us a year of tranquility, sweetness, and health.

Shanah tovah tikateivu (May you be written for a good year).

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

This is your new year’s guide edition of the bulletin!

There are schedules for the High Holy Days, Rabbi Peggy’s Schedule, Choir practice and service dates. High

Holy Day sign up for Living Scroll by Cindy Konowitz, and Yizkor Scroll by Steve Schwartz, and the Break-the

Fast reservation page from me.

This time of year, we launch our largest fundraising opportunity to supplement the operational budget. Without

these funds, our dues structure comes up very short. It is a big job to balance our expenses against our income

and we sincerely hope you will make your contributions worthy of all the hard work of our all-volunteer board

and activity leaders who also contribute significant money and especially hours and hours of their time. Time and

Money—it is inescapable when an organization such as our synagogue tries to provide for the Jewish community

as much as we accomplish. What we don’t have in money, we make up with time. And vice-versa. Although

that is an avenue of greater resistance. We are continually grateful for our friends and past members for significant

donations that always seem Heaven sent when we receive them.

Our annual picnic and pool party was a lot of work for our hosts, but can they put on a party. Let me tell you if

you missed the wonderful party we enjoyed poolside, you won’t want to miss it next year. Even the variety of

side dishes were very varied and delicious. We have many good cooks in our company! Thank you to Shari and

Barry Brill for their continued generosity and expert hosting skills. These are some of the pictures of people

having a very fun time.

JFD held a Community Leadership Workshop with the fabulous Nanette

Fridman speaker, trainer, and author of On Board at Congregation Beth

Emeth in Wilmington on Friday, August 23, which I attended and I sat

with dear friend and previous long time Dover resident Arlene Wilson.

As summer draws to a close, vacations are done so our children and

grandchildren return to school refreshed, we have the opportunity to

reset and refresh our lives and outlooks about who we are and where we

are heading. We have the opportunity to begin anew at this New Year--

new promises, new experiences, new friends. Let’s come together to celebrate all that we have accomplished

during the past year and to move forward together into the new year with new insights and new promises to

become better--better at all we enjoy Jewishly, better at all and who we are responsible for, and better at helping

out with service for the strong positive Jewish community we are building together at Beth Sholom. Happy New

Beginnings! Happy New Year!

there are any concerns or questions, please contact me.

High Holiday Service Policy

The Board of Congregation Beth Sholom has long had the policy of open seating for the High

Holidays. Modest dress is requested. Men are required to wear head covering while women

have the personal option. Again, this year we invite you to attend the services, participate in

the Break Fast, and support the synagogue with your generosity.

More especially, what we would really like is for you to make a firm commitment this year to

becoming more involved and participating in more programs and activities. We would like you

to become an active member. We would like you to rekindle your heritage and love of your

Judaism through what we offer starting at this New Year and carry it forward throughout the

whole cycle of Holidays and Shabbats. Where you can begin this journey is to pick up a

membership package from the foyer, a calendar, and our brochure with contact information.

Please feel free to ask for assistance and direction. We have a lot of active Board members who

will gladly lead you and guide you. Then make yourselves at home in your shul.

If you are already a member and will be attending another synagogue for the holidays, you may

need to have a “Member in Good Standing” letter from Congregation Beth Sholom in order to

have access for seating. Please let Barbara in the office know if you need such a letter.

BETH SHOLOM CHOIR The Beth Sholom Choir will resume practices on Tuesday evening September 10 at 6:00 pm under the direction

of Erin Greer. If you would like to join, please call the office and leave a message. One of the members will call

to welcome you and introduce you to what music we have been learning. The majority of our music is service

music; however, we also learn special music selections that become our “Lucky Strike” which we add at the end

of our service accompaniment. Please come and sing along with us. You don’t have to be a musically trained

person, just as long as you like to sing, have a good time, and learn how rewarding our choir can be for you. CBS Proposed choir schedule 2019-2020 Month Tues Practice Service or

Dear Congregants and Friends,

Before you know it, the High Holy Days will be upon us and Congregation Beth

Sholom is once again preparing the Living Scroll to be presented and read at Rosh

Hashanah services. After being read from the bima, the Living Scroll will then be

placed in the Ark for the coming year. This project began many years ago by Pearl

Spector, a long-time congregant, and in her memory, we would like to continue

this tradition.

As a clarification, this donation is for the Living Scroll 5780/2019 pertaining to you and your family members that are living; at a later date and under a separate letter you will also receive a letter for the Yizkor Scroll that pertains to the people who have passed away. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me at [email protected] or 302-745-1316. If you would like your family’s name and the members of your family inscribed in the Living Scroll, please complete the attached form and return it to Congregation Beth Sholom office before September 23, 2019 so that I have plenty of time to prepare the scroll.

The suggested donation for each single name is $36.00 per single name listing. For each family listing, we suggest a donation $54.00 per family listing. For an unlimited number of family and friends listing, we leave it to you to decide the size of your donation (preferably in excess of the suggested donation amounts). Please remember this is fundraiser and make your checks payable to: Congregation Beth Sholom.

May you not only be inscribed in the great book of life, but may you also choose to generously support this annual tradition. L’Shana Tova! Sincerely yours,

2019–2020 YIZKOR SCROLL 5780

"Yizkor" each Yom Kippur is a magical moment which turns back our attention to our loved ones who have left this life. When we atone for our sins, we hope to reflect credit in God’s sight on our parents and other family members no longer with us, and how they influenced us to become menschen. Now that they have passed from this life, that may be as much as what we can still hope to do for them. And so that makes for a natural connection between Yom Kippur and Yizkor, to remember our loved ones who have passed on. We remember them with great affection; and we welcome the Yizkor as our uniquely Jewish way to pray for their souls and to preserve our ties with them. Our custom at Beth Sholom is to publish the names of our departed loved ones on a special Yizkor Memorial Scroll which will be read aloud to the Congregation during the Yizkor service, so that others too will recall them. After those names of your departed loved ones will be read aloud during the Yom Kippur service, the Yizkor Memorial Scroll containing their names will be placed ceremonially in the Holy Ark with the Torah Scrolls where it will remain for the entire year, until the following Yom Kippur. Please complete and return the form below and send it to the Synagogue office, 340 N. Queen St., Dover, Delaware 19904, to arrive not later than Thursday, October 3 together with your donation. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Beth Sholom Yizkor Scroll Congregation Beth Sholom 340 N.
