High Holiday Service Policy
The Board of Congregation Beth Sholom has long had the policy of open seating for the High
Holidays. Modest dress is requested. Men are required to wear head covering while women
have the personal option. Again, this year we invite you to attend the services, participate in
the Break Fast, and support the synagogue with your generosity.
More especially, what we would really like is for you to make a firm commitment this year to
becoming more involved and participating in more programs and activities. We would like you
to become an active member. We would like you to rekindle your heritage and love of your
Judaism through what we offer starting at this New Year and carry it forward throughout the
whole cycle of Holidays and Shabbats. Where you can begin this journey is to pick up a
membership package from the foyer, a calendar, and our brochure with contact information.
Please feel free to ask for assistance and direction. We have a lot of active Board members who
will gladly lead you and guide you. Then make yourselves at home in your shul.
If you are already a member and will be attending another synagogue for the holidays, you may
need to have a “Member in Good Standing” letter from Congregation Beth Sholom in order to
have access for seating. Please let Barbara in the office know if you need such a letter.

Rabbi Peggy de Prophetis’ Schedule Friday evening services begin at 7:00 pm followed by oneg. Saturday Table Torah service begins
at 9:45 am, followed by kiddush lunch and class. Sunday service begins at 9:30 am followed by
classes. Rabbi keeps each class independent of previous discussions so that you may join and enjoy
the readings and discussions.

BETH SHOLOM CHOIR The Beth Sholom Choir will resume practices on Tuesday evening September 10 at 6:00 pm under the direction
of Erin Greer. If you would like to join, please call the office and leave a message. One of the members will call
to welcome you and introduce you to what music we have been learning. The majority of our music is service
music; however, we also learn special music selections that become our “Lucky Strike” which we add at the end
of our service accompaniment. Please come and sing along with us. You don’t have to be a musically trained

Religious School Schedule
We invite Children 6 and above to meet on Tuesday afternoons from 4:45 pm to 6:00 pm on September 17 and
24 to discuss the High Holy Days of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. There will be craft making, discussion and
snacks. Please plan to bring your children for an introduction to Religious Training and stay to help. The older
children, 12 and above will meet with Mr. Schwartz to resume the practice of prayers and service music ready
for their formal training towards Bar/Bat Mitzvah.
We will also be having a craft day on Sunday October 3 at 4:30 pm to make decorations for the Sukkah. Different
stations for different projects will be set up and everyone can make or assist then decorate the Sukkah.
Afterwards we will have a light supper and celebrate the holiday of Sukkot together. All ages are invited to this
Sukkah party and to do the luluv shake!
More information about continued Religious School dates will be discussed as we conclude these High Holy Day
events.

Before you know it, the High Holy Days will be upon us and Congregation Beth
Sholom is once again preparing the Living Scroll to be presented and read at Rosh
Hashanah services. After being read from the bima, the Living Scroll will then be
placed in the Ark for the coming year. This project began many years ago by Pearl
Spector, a long-time congregant, and in her memory, we would like to continue
this tradition.
As a clarification, this donation is for the Living Scroll 5780/2019 pertaining to you and your family members that are living; at a later date and under a separate letter you will also receive a letter for the Yizkor Scroll that pertains to the people who have passed away. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me at [email protected] or 302-745-1316. If you would like your family’s name and the members of your family inscribed in the Living Scroll, please complete the attached form and return it to Congregation Beth Sholom office before September 23, 2019 so that I have plenty of time to prepare the scroll.
The suggested donation for each single name is $36.00 per single name listing. For each family listing, we suggest a donation $54.00 per family listing. For an unlimited number of family and friends listing, we leave it to you to decide the size of your donation (preferably in excess of the suggested donation amounts). "Yizkor" each Yom Kippur is a magical moment which turns back our attention to our loved ones who have left this life. When we atone for our sins, we hope to reflect credit in God’s sight on our parents and other family members no longer with us, and how they influenced us to become menschen. Now that they have passed from this life, that may be as much as what we can still hope to do for them. And so that makes for a natural connection between Yom Kippur and Yizkor, to remember our loved ones who have passed on. We remember them with great affection; and we welcome the Yizkor as our uniquely Jewish way to pray for their souls and to preserve our ties with them. Our custom at Beth Sholom is to publish the names of our departed loved ones on a special Yizkor Memorial Scroll which will be read aloud to the Congregation during the Yizkor service, so that others too will recall them. After those names of your departed loved ones will be read aloud during the Yom Kippur service, the Yizkor Memorial Scroll containing their names will be placed ceremonially in the Holy Ark with the Torah Scrolls where it will remain for the entire year, until the following Yom Kippur.
