From the beginning of my

tenure at our synagogue, I

was told that the middle

scroll in our ark was our

Holocaust scroll. I believed

this because the parchment

looks burnt and damaged in

many places. By the way, we

use this Torah regularly. Most of our Bnei Mitzvah

students carry it because it is lighter than the other

Torahs. We read from it during our Second Day

Rosh Hashanah service at the Huntington Beach

pier and at select times throughout the year such as

at Shavuot.

I have been aware that the seams are coming

apart especially at the revelation of the Ten

Commandments. It had become imperative to

repair the scroll. Robin Harrison, VP of Religious

Practice, and I have begun researching the origin of

our Torahs. To my surprise, we identified two

Torahs on the left as surviving the Holocaust.

In Cantor Harry Newman’s autobiography, of

blessed memory, he describes how the Germans

during WWII collected thousands of Jewish

religious artifacts in Europe and stored them in

Czechoslovakia. After the war, the World

Progressive Jewish movement created a repository

in London for the “Czech Torahs.”

He writes, “One scroll was sent to Temple Beth

David and placed in the Ark… When conservative

Congregation Hillel of Huntington Beach merged

with Temple Beth David, they brought their own

Czech Torah with them. Now we had two in our

Ark and used both of them on Rosh Hashana and

Yom Kippur.”

Cantor Newman describes furthermore how the

original atzei chayim (rollers) were replaced with

newer ones and placed in our display case in the

hallway. The letters on the TBD Torah scroll

identified it as coming from Provstitz, a village in

Czechoslovakia that was destroyed by the German

army. According to Cantor Newman, it is well over

two hundred years old. Cantor Newman informs

that it is unusual for a congregation to have a

Holocaust scroll, not withstanding two, since there

are only 1500 Holocaust scrolls in the world.

So what is the story behind our middle scroll, the

one I have referred to as our “Holocaust

scroll?” Previous rabbis, presidents, and long term

members of TBD have no idea of its origin.

We hope to learn more on Tuesday night, Feb.

21, when we bring in a sofer, scribe, to look at our

scroll, repair it, and hopefully give us some

information about it. The sofer will be here that

night approximately 5:00 p.m. and onward. Our

religious school students will be able to come in and

watch him work. You are welcome to come as

well.

On Friday night, Feb. 24 at the 6 & 7th grade

Shabbat service, we will honor those who

contributed to its repair with an Aliyah and talk

more about our Torahs and their history.

We invite you to join us in celebrating our

history, our Torahs, and our people’s survival.

Rabbi Nancy Myers

How many Holocaust scrolls do we have at TBD?

We've all done it. You grab your keys, rush out of the door

(the dog didn't run out, did she?) and go speeding off to

wherever it is you are trying to arrive on time. You don't

make eye contact with the drivers in the cars around you- after all, if you

look at them, they may think it is okay to change lanes in front of you.

The nerve! You pull into your space and rush to your destination, still

tense from your journey. Well, what if that destination is Temple Beth

David? Did you just bring those rushed feelings in with you?

Sometimes, we all need to just slow down a bit and engage with those

around us. Maybe give a smile. Or say hello to someone you don't

know and introduce yourself. You know, kind of the exact opposite that

we tend to do during our daily comings and goings. Hospitality is such

an important thing for all of us. Feeling welcome and comfortable- espe-

cially at TBD- is the key to having memorable experiences and making

good memories.

Coincidentally, we are not alone. The Union for Reform Judaism (URJ)

is in the midst of a campaign they are calling "Audacious Hospitality."

This focuses on their effort to embrace diversity and to reach out to those

currently not engaged in Jewish life. The URJ believes that everyone can

feel at home in a Jewish community - and that Judaism must meet people

where they are today to thrive tomorrow. Here is a link to their website

if you would like more information about their initiative http://

www.urj.org/audacioushospitality.

I think there is a lot to be said for that, and I for one hope that we can all

find it within ourselves to always be friendly and polite with one another

at TBD, and to make an effort to make everyone (members and visitors

alike) feel welcome and comfortable. Even if we had to cut someone off

on the freeway on our way here.

SISTERHOOD MATTERS!

By Anne Farber, Sisterhood President

SISTERHOOD MATTERS…

The Sisterhood/Brotherhood paid-up dinner will not be held in

February. Instead, we are planning something very different to be held in

August. You will receive publicity way in advance of the event.

Hope everyone had a fun (and profitable) time at Pechanga.

Please try to attend our very worthy social action workshop planned by Debbie

Lelchuk on February 5th. All supplies will be provided.

Difficult to believe, but it is Hamentaschen baking time again! Please

call Eileen Tobey to place your advance order. Yummy!

Let’s start 2017 with Random Acts of Kindness (no, you are not going to

receive a new Honda). To begin, how about writing a note to a friend or let

someone in ahead of you in line at the grocery store?

I would like to let Brotherhood know that their Deli Man event was tasty and an

entertaining evening.

If you can volunteer a few hours a month in the gift shop, please call chair,

Jackie Hewitt at 714-846-4620.

Shalom,

Anne Farber, President

As we get into 2017 it appears that there have

been no arrests in the case of the vandalism

and death threats at the Reform Congregation

in Ra’anana, a suburb north of Tel Aviv, that

was included in last month's article. The

Israel Religious Action Center (IRAC) which

is the social justice and legal action arm of

the Israel Movement for Progressive and

Reform Judaism (IMPJ) is taking a strong

stand against a domestic ultra-nationalist

hate group. Their Executive Director, Anat

Hoffman, wrote after the recent Women's

Marches, "It is a rare event in anyone's life to

see millions around the world marching for

the rights and dignity of women. The sight

was moving and the message was universal,

enough to hate and enough to discrimination.

A global display of solidarity of that size

against the rising tide of racism and

jingoist nationalism might mean that level

heads are finally waking up and joining the

fray."

She added, that one way IRAC is part of that

global struggle is its campaign against the

hate group Lehava (the “flame”) that is led

by the charismatic, Bentzi

Gopstein. Gopstein has become an expert at

using the language of nationalism and

Judaism to justify sending his army of

misguided thugs to commit hate crimes

against other Jews, churches, and mosques.

His main target is Israel’s Arab citizens, who

make up almost a quarter of the population.

He also uses social media to spread his

message, raise money, and post fake news

scapegoating Arabs for any crime committed

in Israel. "It helps him recruit new followers,

and to sell his group as something in line

with the best of our Jewish values. Nothing

could be further from the truth, and we are

here to keep the record straight."

By clicking on ARZA you can join and

support the IMPJ as it promotes Reform

Judaism and its values, and the actions of

IRC to achieve pluralism in a democratic and

Jewish Israel.

As for predictions that were mentioned last

month, the Trump administration still is

being assembled, and the outlook for the two

state solution and a lasting peace looks bleak.

His son-in-law, Jared Kushner, is a close

adviser, who does not appear to agree with

the long standing and bipartisan US position

of support for a two sate solution. David

Friedman, the proposed US Ambassador to

Israel, is an Orthodox Jew who holds views

in direct opposition to long-standing U.S.

policy positions. He opposes a two-state

solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict,

and is a long time financial supporter of

Israeli West Bank settlements. He advocates

for Israel’s annexation of the West Bank,

maintaining that the occupied Palestinian

Territories are not occupied. Also, Friedman

wants to move the U.S. embassy from Tel

Aviv to Jerusalem, thereby recognizing

Jerusalem as Israel's capital, a disputed city

of which both Israelis and Palestinians claim

ownership. He has no career experience with

either policy or diplomacy. He is a close

Trump friend, and a bankruptcy lawyer who

advised Trump during the campaign and the

bankruptcy of Trump's investments in

Atlantic City casinos.

To Our Temple Beth David Family:

As most of you are aware, our Temple depends on donations to deliver the high quality of

services to all of you. We understand that many of you are still struggling with the recent

economic downturn. However, we have come up with a way that will allow you to donate to

the Temple without spending a penny of your own money, plus you will actually save money

on many purchases that you normally make!

We would like to introduce you to Goodshop and Goodsearch. Goodshop works with more

than 5,000 stores that will provide all of you with discounts on what you normally buy and then

will donate up to 20% of the purchase price to the Temple. You will simply click on a link on

the Temple Home Page, start saving money for your family and help the Temple out as

well! We have included an easy step-by-step signup guide with this letter. Here are some

examples of companies that participate in the program:

Target, Macy’s, Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, Sears, Sak’s, Apple, Old Navy, the Gap, Amazon,

Office Depot, Petco, Staples, Dell, The Limited, Holiday Inn, Groupon, Levi’s, Lands End,

Best Buy, 1-800 Flowers, 24 Hour Fitness, and Victoria’s Secret.

These are companies that we all normally shop at, and by simply clicking on the link on the

Temple website, you will be saving money for your family and actually raising money for the

Temple. In addition, you can also save money by dining out at participating restaurants and, at

the same time, raising donations for the Temple as well. It’s simple, free and easy to use, and

the average family using the site over a year will actually raise more than $350 annually for the

Temple. Multiply that by our 300 families and we will raise more than $100,000 per year for

the Temple! This program really works. Goodshop has raised more than $11 million for

charitable organizations with this program.

Likewise, we are also rolling out Goodsearch. By doing your internet searches through

Goodsearch.com, which links with Yahoo, the Temple will receive a penny for every internet

search. If you can imagine how many internet searches you do, and your families do, this will

also add up to real money for the Temple.

We encourage all of you to participate and to help strengthen our Temple for all of us and for

the generations to come.

With best regards,

Neil Kornswiet Eric Schiffer Nancy Meyers
