SALES UPDATE

FASIG-TIPTON TO DISPERSE ROCKIN' Z RANCHBy Ron Mitchellt @BH_RMitchell

Since establishing his Rockin' Z Ranch 10 years ago, Dr. Robert Zoellner has built the operation

near Beggs, Okla. into a successful entity that re-flects his attention to careful study and businesslike approach to breeding and racing.

In addition to providing boarding, foaling, sale preparation services, and standing stallions at his ranch, Zoellner has bred and raced nine stakes winners, including grade 3 winners She's All In and Peach Brew, as well as the promising 3-year-old colt Rowdy the Warrior, who has earned points on the 2017 Road to the Kentucky Derby.

Because of personal reasons, Zoellner, an optometrist and successful businessman, is dispersing his bloodstock and selling his 240-acre ranch, while leaving the door open to a possible return to Thoroughbred ownership.

When Fasig-Tipton conducts its Kentucky winter mixed sale Feb. 6-7, 32 horses from the Rockin' Z dispersal will be offered without reserve by Vinery Sales. The Oklahoma property will be divided into separate tracts and sold at auction in late spring.

"I love horse racing, and every aspect of the business," Zoellner said Jan. 30. "I am going through some personal issues and I need to sell everything. It's hard to put values on everything other than putting it through a sale and turning it into cash.

"It’s been a fun run. You get a nice horse and it validates what you've done correctly. I am proud of the stock and facilities and the way we have taken care of them. I have been fortunate to be surrounded by some great people in the business."

Once everything shakes out and he moves on to the next chapter of his life, Zoellner said he would likely return to racehorse ownership.

"Down the road, I will probably go to 2-year-olds in training sales in 2018 and buy some colts that are ready to run," Zoellner said.

Zoellner also advised any newcomer to the horse industry to have a business plan and adhere to it, even if things are not going well.

"Treat it like a business, albeit one that you love," he offered. "We had a business plan we

stuck to. The last couple of years were pretty sparse but we still followed our plan and the way we were going about it."

The owner-breeder also suggested anyone getting into racing or breeding to immerse themselves with as much information as possible.

"The part I would recommend to anybody getting started would be to keep your ears open and your mouth shut," Zoellner said. "Go to seminars and listen and then follow through with the science that is out there. You can really increase your odds. Then you sprinkle in a little good luck and—voila!"

Among the highlights of the Rockin' Z dispersal will be Rowdy the Warrior (Hip 571), an Oklahoma-bred son of Warrior's Reward trained by Donnie Von Hemel.

Wearing Zoellner’s distinctive black silks emblazoned with a white "Z," Rowdy the Warrior was second and third, respectively, at sprint distances in his first two starts. Stretched out to a mile, the colt broke through in maiden special weight company at Remington Park before consecutive runner-up efforts in an allowance and the Don C. McNeill Stakes. Rowdy the Warrior completed his juvenile season with a record of 1-3-1 from six starts after finishing fourth in another stake at Remington.

In the Jan. 16 Smarty Jones Stakes at Oaklawn Park, the colt picked up two points on the road to the May 6 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1), placing third behind the romp of Uncontested on a sloppy, sealed track.

"He's a big, good-looking rascal; an exciting animal," the owner said. "It was a speed-biased track when they ran the Smarty Jones and he was

the only one that actually passed horses."Produced from the grade 3-placed Gentlemen

mare Lovely Sage, a half sister to the dam of millionaire grade 2 winner International Star, the colt descends from the female family of grade 2 winners Halory Hunter and Van Nistelrooy, among others.

"I may be selling him low or I maybe selling him high," Zoellner said of sending the colt through the ring without reserve. "I will let you know in a year."

Among the other top lots in the Rockin' Z dispersal are She's All In (Hip 96), a $1.1 million earner whose 16 wins included eight stakes, and her grade 3-winning half sister Peach Brew. Both are offered as broodmares, with She’s All In in foal to Magna Graduate on an April 17, 2016, last cover date and Peach Brew in foal to Temple City on a last mating day of May 1, 2016.

Rockin' Z is also selling the stallion Notional, a grade 2 winner who finished second in the Florida Derby (G1) and has been represented by five stakes winners to date, including Southwest Stakes (G3) winner and Arkansas Derby (G1) runner-up Far Right.

Held at the Fasig-Tipton headquarters in Lexington, the winter mixed sale begins at 10 a.m. daily Feb. 6-7.

'CHROME' SETTLES IN AT TAYLOR MADEBy Erin Sheat @BH_EShea

Two-time Horse of the Year California Chrome is set-tling in at Taylor Made Farm near Nicholasville, Ky.,

after arriving Jan. 29. The X-rays following his final race are all clear.

After finishing ninth in the Pegasus World Cup Invitational (G1) Jan. 28 at Gulfstream Park, trainer Art Sherman said there was a small amount of swelling in California Chrome's right knee, which the trainer didn't think was too serious. To be cautious, Taylor Made conducted a full set of X-rays and the champion is all clear.

"They thought that when he jogged he may have been a little off in the right front, and they thought there might have been a little heat in his right knee," Taylor Made's Duncan Taylor said Jan. 30. "We've been X-raying him after every race, so we went ahead and did a full set of X-rays and everything looks good. There's not any problem there."

Taylor said the 6-year-old son of Lucky Pulpit is on schedule to start the breeding season on time.

"He's settling in good, he's been out in his paddock and everything is going good so far," Taylor said. "You know it feels great, the idea that he's coming here has already sunk in."

The Taylor Made team is excited to have California Chrome preparing for his first season at stud, which is expected to begin in mid-February.

California Chrome retires as the leading North American-based horse by earnings with more than $14,752,650 powered by 10 graded stakes wins, including seven at the group/grade 1 level, two of those being classics.

"We've had a really good response to the stud fee

($40,000). I haven't heard anybody saying 'You stood him too high,'" Taylor said. "We're able to pick through the mares. We've had a really good response from the breeders."

As for the off-the-board finish in his final start—his first since 2014—Taylor noted the outside post presented a high hurdle for California Chrome.

"It's sort of a letdown that his last performance is what it was—I think that's not the (typical) Chrome," Taylor said. "Not to make excuses. Even if we were right next to Arrogate, we might not have been able to beat Arrogate; he's a great horse. I'm not taking anything away from them."

Taylor thanked the fans who cheered California Chrome throughout his racing career.

"We really appreciate all the fans, and the people who have gotten to enjoy Chrome and seeing that has been a lot of our enjoyment," Taylor said. "You really get to see first-hand how much a lot of people really love horses. You see these fans, when they fall in love with a horse, how much they actually care about them; it's really moving and rewarding to see. And you realize how blessed you are to be around these animals every day." BH

SHAMAN GHOST EXITS PEGASUS IN GOOD ORDERBy Erin Sheat @BH_EShea

Stronach Stable's Shaman Ghost exited his second place finish in the $12 million Pegasus World Cup

Invitational Stakes (G1) Jan. 28 at Gulfstream Park in good order, according to trainer Jimmy Jerkens.

Although plans are not set for the 5-year-old Canadian champion's next race, Jerkens said he's staying in South Florida for the time being and he will not be run back immediately as owner Frank Stronach likes to spread out starts for his horses.

"He looks good. He's going to go do a little something tomorrow, maybe jog a little, but he looks good," Jerkens said Jan. 30.

"(Stronach is) pretty adamant about spacing his horses' races out... he won't be running back right around the corner," he added, mentioning that after Shaman Ghost won the Woodward Stakes (G1) at Saratoga Race Course in September, Stronach did

not want to run the horse back the next month in the Jockey Club Gold Cup Stakes (G1) at Belmont Park. Instead, the team waited until November to run in

the Clark Handicap (G1) at Churchill Downs, where Shaman Ghost rallied for third behind a dominant front-running effort by Gun Runner.

After the Clark, it was full speed ahead to the Pegasus. Through five works at Palm Meadows, including a bullet :47 3/5 for four furlongs Jan. 22, the bay horse gave his connections confidence that'd he perform in the big race.

"After the top two (Arrogate and California Chrome), I thought everybody was pretty evenly matched," Jerkens said. "And (Shaman Ghost is) a pretty gritty horse, and he's pretty consistent. And as long as he's training good enough, it's always good to take a shot.

"He went out there and did his job (in the Pegasus) And we're really proud of him."

And taking the chance paid off big time. When the son of Ghostzapper crossed the wire 4 3/4 lengths behind Arrogate in the world's richest race, he picked up $1,750,000 that catapulted him to the top of his sire's all-time leading runners just ahead of multiple graded stakes winner Moreno, who has $2,992,190 in earnings.

With more than $3 million in earnings and a record of 6-2-2 from 14 starts, Shaman Ghost has had a solid career on the track but it doesn't seem to be over just yet.

In 2015 he won two stakes in Canada, including the Queen's Plate. He was also named the champion 3-year-old Sovereign Award winner. Last year he started in four graded stakes, winning the Woodward and the Brooklyn Invitational Stakes (G2), and placing in the Clark. His 2017 has started off strong and Jerkens said the horse will continue to train as long as he's sound and his owner is on board.

"I'm sure we'll try to race him through the year as long as he stays sound enough," Jerkens said. "It certainly looks like he's maybe bumped it up a notch in the last half year, so you don't really want to (retire him) unless you're forced to with soundness issues...we'd like to see if he can make the year." 100TH BLACK-TYPE WINNER FOR STORMY ATLANTICBy Eric Mitchellt @BH_EMitchell

Hill 'n' Dale Farms' Stormy Atlantic had his 100th black-type stakes winner when Stormy Liberal took

the Jan. 29 Clocker's Corner Stakes at Santa Anita Park. The 6 1/2-furlong race on the downhill turf course

was the first stakes victory for the 5-year-old gelding out of the winning Royal Academy daughter Vassar. Stormy Liberal was bred in Kentucky by Dapple Bloodstock & Gryphon Investments and is now owned by Rockingham Ranch.

Stormy Liberal is the second stakes winner and fourth black-type performer produced by Vassar. Her other top foals include stakes winner Shimmering Moment (Afleet Alex), grade 1-placed winner and sire Coast Guard (Stormy Atlantic), and stakes-placed winner Garifine (Belong to Me).

Stormy Atlantic is also the broodmare sire of grade 1-placed Blameitonthelaw, who finished third behind Stormy Liberal. Blameitonthelaw is the second black-type horse produced by stakes winner Letter of the Law, whose other top foal is stakes winner Bourbon Sense (Street Sense).

Bred and raced by Arthur Appleton, Florida-bred Stormy Atlantic is a son of Storm Cat out of the grade 1 winner Hail Atlantis (Seattle Slew). Appleton bought Hail Atlantis, winner of the 1990 Santa Anita Oaks (G1), for $650,000 out of the 1993 Keeneland November

breeding stock sale from Eaton-Williams, agent for Wooden Horse Investments.

Stormy Atlantic became Hail Atlantis' first stakes winner when he won the 1998 Havre de Grace Stakes at Pimlico Race Course. Out of 15 starts, he would win six times, including another stakes win in the Damitrius Stakes at Delaware Park, and place three times. He retired with $148,126 in earnings.

Stormy Atlantic entered stud at Appleton's Bridlewood Farm near Ocala in 1999, and his first crop came out running. He ranked among the top 10 by earnings in a strong 2002 freshman sire class that included Distorted Humor, Awesome Again, Elusive Quality, and Tale of the Cat. Stormy Atlantic was the co-fourth-leading first-crop sire by stakes winners with three. At the 2002 Barretts select 2-year-olds in training sale, his daughter Atlantic Ocean topped the sale at $1.9 million and went on to become a multiple grade 3 winner for The Thoroughbred Corp.

John Sikura, owner of Hill 'n' Dales Farms near Lexington bought a minority interest in Stormy Atlantic in 2002 and syndicated the stallion, with Bridlewood retaining a majority ownership. The stallion was moved to Hill 'n' Dale in 2003 where he currently stands for $15,000.

"This is a horse that did it the hard way," Sikura said. "The only thing missing from him being considered one of the elite sires is a few more grade 1 winners, but he's gotten champions and has been the leading sire of 2-year-olds. He is a very versatile horse as well, gettting winners on dirt and turf. I believe he will be a significant

broodmare sire."To date, Stormy Atlantic has sired 39 graded/

group stakes winners and six champions, including 2013 Canadian Horse of the Year and champion 3-year-old colt Up With the Birds, 2014 Canadian champion 2-year-old colt Conquest Typhoon, 2011 Canadian champion 2-year-old Maritimer, 2006 Canadian champion 2-year-old colt Leonnatus Anteas, and Puerto Rican champion 3-year-old Storm Allied.

"We're so proud to have a horse in the barn with 100 black-type stakes winners. It is a major achievement," Sikura said. BH

MIGLIORE FREELANCING AS FASIG-TIPTON ANNOUNCERBy Lenny Shulman

Richie Migliore, a former jockey on the New York Racing Association circuit who has become a val-

ued analyst on NYRA Bets telecasts, has picked up an-other hat—he is doing freelance work as an announcer at Fasig-Tipton sales around the country.

Migliore worked his first auction at Fasig-Tipton’s Midlantic winter mixed sale in Timonium, Md., Jan. 29, and will be in the announcer rotation at the upcoming Kentucky Winter Mixed sale Feb. 6-7 and at Fasig’s Gulfstream sale for 2-year-olds in training March 1 at Gulfstream Park. He will continue doing his analysis on NYRA telecasts from Aqueduct Racetrack, Belmont Park, and Saratoga Race Course.

"I'm just trying to get comfortable doing the announcing," said the personable Migliore. "It's a little more difficult than it looks because you have to give concise information in a very short period of time, and then put your own style to it so you don't sound too mechanical.

"The whole Fasig-Tipton team couldn't be any more welcoming or nice in offering their advice. I'm very fortunate to have someone like Terence Collier around mentoring me and offering critiques."

Fasig-Tipton president Boyd Browning noted, "We are always on the lookout for folks who can add

CLASSIC EMPIRE TOPS NTRA 3-YEAR-OLD POLLBy Mary Reedert @BH_MReeder

The first week of the National Thoroughbred Racing Association top 3-year-old poll and top Thorough-

bred poll for older horses have Classic Empire and Arrogate receiving the highest votes respectively for each.

John C. Oxley's Classic Empire, who ranks first with 30 points on the "Road to the Kentucky Derby" leaderboard, took the lead in the top 3-year-old poll with 288 points and 28 first-place votes.

The son of Pioneerof the Nile, recently named the 2016 2-year-old champion, is scheduled to make his sophomore debut in the $350,000 Lambholm South Holy Bull Stakes (G2) Feb. 4 at Gulfstream Park. Trained by Mark Casse, Classic Empire has won four of five starts including the Oct. 8 Claiborne Breeders' Futurity at Keeneland and the Sentinent Jet Breeders' Cup Juvenile (both G1) at Santa Anita Park Nov. 5.

McCraken took second position on the poll with 209 points and has 10 points on the Road to the Kentucky Derby leaderboard. Whitham Thoroughbreds' homebred is undefeated in three starts. After breaking his maiden at Churchill Downs Oct. 2, the son of Ghostzapper went on to win the Oct. 30 Street Sense Stakes and the Nov. 26 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes (G2) there as well.

Juddmonte's Arrogate replaces the now retired California Chrome, who dominated the voting in 2016, at the top of the 2017 poll with 300 points and 30 first-place votes.

But the order following that leader did not change too dramatically with the two 2016 champion females

Songbird and Tepin keeping the pace in second and third.

Shaman Ghost's runner-up finish in the Pegasus World Cup Invitational Stakes (G1) behind Arrogate sees a boost as he moves up in the voting substantially from last year. BH

IRISH THOROUGHBRED BREEDERS' ASSOCIATION HONORS RUSSELLBy BloodHorse Staff

Keeneland director of sales operations Geoffrey Russell was honored with the Irish Thoroughbred Breeders' As-

sociation's 2016 Wild Geese Award at its National Breeding and Racing Awards ceremony Jan. 28.

ITBA chairman Stephen Collins said the Wild Geese Award is an acknowledgement "to one of our own who has flown the Irish flag with pride on an international stage."

Born in Dublin, Ireland, Russell gained early experience at Coolmore Stud and as a bid spotter at Goffs. He came to the U.S. in 1982, first working at Fasig-Tipton and then at Elmendorf Farm. He returned to Fasig-Tipton as vice president of appraisals and director of sales administration before joining Keeneland in 1996 as assistant director of sales to Rogers Beasley.

"Keeneland congratulates Geoffrey on receiving the Wild Geese Award," said Keeneland vice president of racing and sales Bob Elliston. "Geoffrey is a valuable component of the Keeneland sales and the industry as a whole, and we are proud that he chose here to land."

Russell represents Keeneland on the International Catalogue Standards Committee, International Grading and Race Planning Advisory Committee, and is chairman of the Society of International Thoroughbred Auctioneers. He also serves on the board of the Grayson-Jockey Club Foundation and is a member of the Sales Integrity Task Force. BH

Arrogate left a trail of dazzling statistics as he con-quered uncharted territory, performing feats that

defied everything we know about handicapping races.Arrogate has now defeated grade 1 winners Keen

Ice (Travers) by 11 and 11 1/4 lengths, Hoppertunity (Jockey Club Gold Cup) by 11 1/2 lengths, Noble Bird (Stephen Foster) by 14 1/4 lengths, Gun Runner (Clark Handicap) by 15 lengths, Melatonin (Santa Anita Handicap and Santa Anita Gold Cup) by 15 3/4 lengths, Frosted (Met Mile and Whitney) by 19 1/4 lengths, Connect (Cigar Mile) by 21 3/4 lengths, Creator (Belmont Stakes) by 21 3/4 lengths, Effinex (Clark Handicap) by 24 lengths, and Exaggerator (Preakness, Santa Anita Derby, and Haskell) by 33 lengths.

Of course it was sad to California Chrome go out the way he did, but it was obvious something was wrong with him nearing the half-mile pole when he was totally empty when Espinoza asked him to run. The bottom line is that, in the minds of his fans, and most racing fans and experts, this race never happened. This simply was not California Chrome.

And Arrogate has done all that in only three races–leading all the way, coming from third, and coming from fifth. He’s won being on the inside and won being on the outside, and won his three stakes in three different states in the East, West, and South.

RACINGCOMMENTARYwith Bob Barry

LEGENDS AND THE REAL THINGBy Bob Barry

The turf doesn't quite meet the surf down at Frank Stronach's Gulfstream Park in Hallandale

Beach, Fl., but legend has it that if you can get Paul Bunyon to lay down his axe and give you a leg up on old Pegasus, on a clear day you can see all the way from Hollywood Beach to Bal Harbour.

Gulfstream's 100-foot-tall statue of Pegasus (by Poseidon out of Medusa) never seemed likely to help in the revitalization of racing.

But now that the inaugural running of the Pegasus World Cup Invitational has been won by legend-in-the-making Arrogate (with Pegasus prominent in the pre-race promotions), it's clear that Mr. Stronach is in hot pursuit of the next big thing in American racing, whatever that might be.

If the actual race was not an artistic success along the lines of the 2016 Breeders' Cup Classic (G1), a big record in all-sources handle at least provided some pecuniary consolation. A glorious phoenix has risen from the ashes of the old Donn Handicap.

With Hallandale buzzing in anticipation of the Arrogate—California Chrome rematch, while hundreds of horseplayers vying for the National Handicapping Championship helped keep Las Vegas from nodding off, my quiet corner of the world was saddened to hear of the sudden death of Many Clouds at Cheltenham.

The Irish-bred steeplechaser collapsed just past the finish line in what was his final and perhaps greatest victory, heading the heavy favorite Thistlecrack over Cheltenham's testing uphill finish, while most of California slept.

Later, as California Chrome stepped into his final starting gate, I found myself thinking of Many Clouds, and of the 1995 Donn Handicap, and hoping like hell that all the horses would come home safely.

The Pegasus had the makings of a match race, with Arrogate sending from the rail and Chrome winging from the outside. I remembered how Holy Bull and Cigar had hooked up early in the 1995 Donn, offering the promise of a great race, right up until the moment when the great gray champion was pulled up in the backstretch, his

brilliant racing career ended. What can you say about

Many Clouds? That he became a Grand National winner by overcoming Aintree's murderous fences but that his heart couldn't survive his own indomitable sprit? It's enough to say that he was a horse, a Thoroughbred horse, before reminding ourselves that it is these very real horses that deliver us from any vestigial need for myth or legend. BH
