Silva Bay Yacht Club Newsletter January, 2016 Commodore’s Report Last time I contacted you all it was eight bells on Christmas Eve and Paddy and I were cozy in Salish C. Well, you all know the Christmas poem "A Visit from St. Nicholas". There is a line "…….there arose such a clatter, I sprang from my bed to see what was the matter". I can tell you the clatter on our roof was not eight tiny reindeer. The thumpin' great crashes were to heavy footed gulls fighting over a starfish. I dashed out in my pj's and rescued that desperate starfish only to get a royal cussin' from two "p" ed off gulls. The gulls, of course, left their usual trademark. As a plus, for Christmas morning there was a very light dusting of snow on the docks. It was gone in minutes but it was a good start to a lovely Christmas day. So, let's back up to the annual Lighted Boat Event. We did not have a big turnout but we did have a great evening. Seaburban, Bela Vida, Shadowfax and Dog Star were festooned with Christmas lights. The hot mulled wine warmed us up. We had a visit from RCM- SAR, unit 29. Coxswain John Davis presented the club with a framed picture of Community Spirit, the new rescue boat that the SBYC helped fund and equip. The lighted Boat event was the last cruise of the year and allows Fleet Captain Jill to pass on her flag after a very successful cruising year. One piece of news many of you are aware of but I must mention is the proposed reopening of the Kitsilano Coast Guard Station. I am sure you all joined me in a quiet cheer when the news came out. It is always nice to welcome new members to the club. Agathe Gaulin and Georgette Dunhaime joined us this month with their 44' sailboat "Free Spirit". As Fleet Captain Jill closes out her cruising year our 2016 Fleet Captain Mark Haliwell opens his cruising year with what appears to be a very well attended Salute the Compass in a few days time. The last count I saw was twelve boats on the water and a total of forty-six members for lunch at the Rollo Centre. I think 2016 is off to a roaring start. Commodore’s Report

Eve and Paddy and I were cozy in Salish C.

It was gone

in minutes but it was a good start to a lovely Christmas day.

So, let's back up to the annual Lighted Boat Event. We did not have a big turnout but we did have a great evening. Seaburban, Bela Vida, Shadowfax and Dog Star were festooned with Christmas lights. The hot mulled wine warmed us up. We had a visit from RCM-SAR, unit 29. It is always nice to welcome new members to the club. Agathe Gaulin and Georgette Dunhaime joined us this month with their 44' sailboat "Free Spirit".

Membership Report

A hearty welcome to new members, Agathe Gaulin and Georgette Duhaime.

They have their 44’ sailboat, Free Spirit moored at Degnen Bay. Our Membership Roster now stands at 103. At this time we have 59 of those paid for the 2016 season and 44 outstanding. You are reminded to pay your membership renewal as soon as possible to avoid the $20 late fee which is added after January 31st. Payment can be made by cheque or by e-transfer. Instructions for e-transfer can be found on our website under the Membership tab. Bodil Ellins Membership Chair

Fleet Captain’s Report We had, from what I’ve been told, a record turnout for Salute the Compass on January 2nd. The day was calm, but cold. Thirty one people attended in twelve boats after a brief meeting at Silva Bay Marina. The fleet then proceeded out to the East side of Tugboat Island for the reading of the toast at four compass

points. It was something to see all twelve boats turn and hold positions in unison. This was followed by a lunch at the Rollo Centre where 47 people attended.

The cruise committee has now met a couple of times regarding the 2016 cruising season. Many of the details for each of the planned cruises have been identified. Thanks for the participation and all of the help from the Cruise Committee members.

Our next cruise will be the Sizzlin’ Soup cruise to Pirate’s Cove on Saturday, January 30th. Check the website for further details when they become available. As well, there will be the usual email to the membership regarding the cruise details.

Happy New Year Mark Halliwell

Rear Commodore’s Report

The first meeting and program of the 2016

will be on February 2nd. Chris Boulsbee will be presenting a slide show of their recent trip (3 couples) up the Midi Canal in the south of France. This is an amazing historical and nautical experience so plan on attending and share the wonder. Free to attend—bring a friend!

The venue will be our home at: 50 Haig Road at 7:30 p.m.

Vice Commodore’s Report

I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas

and all the best for the coming year.

I’m wearing two hats for this report. I was Fleet Captain for the Lighted Boat event on Dec. 13th, 2015. The weather was very windy and we didn’t have a great turnout. There were four boats lit up at Page’s; Bela Vida, Seaburban, Shadowfax and Dogstar, with Bela Vida and Seaburban hosting. Just a handful of people came down to visit including the SAR vessel, Community Spirit. Nevertheless, those who did venture down had a good time and warmed up with some mulled cider.

As Vice Commodore for 2016, I am also acting Social Director as we have no one to fill that position yet. Our first event of the year was Salute the Compass on January 2nd. We had an excellent turnout with 12 boats attending, and our new Fleet Captain, Mark Halliwell, did a great job of rounding everyone up!

There was lunch afterwards at the Rollo Centre with 47 people attending, and Robert’s Place putting

Should I Add the $10 Donation to my Dues?

Submitted by: Doug Cunnian, Past Commodore Each year at dues renewal time, you are asked to add a $10 donation to the BC Marine Parks For-ever Society. Why do we ask this? The BC Marine Parks Forever Society operates under the au-thority of the Council of BC Yacht Clubs and its mandate is to assist the Provincial Government in acquiring, expanding, and improving our BC Provincial Marine Parks. When it was formed in 1992, the Council of BC Yacht Clubs asked each member yacht club to contribute $10 per member per year towards funding the Societies mandate. This is why you are asked to donate each year. The map below shows what Parks have been acquired or added to, due to Society money, since 1992. Currently, the Society is adding or replacing stern-tie lines in a number of Parks including Wallace Island and Pirates Cove (as well as many in Desolation Sound Marine Park). In these times of very tight government funding, it is more important than ever that we work with the government to pre-serve areas for marine parks – we will never get those lands back. So your $10 donation isn’t just for you today to enjoy our BC Marine Parks but the future generations as well. Please continue to add your $10 donation. Thank you!

Editor’s Note:

Happy New Year Everyone!

Here we are with another new year of cruising and yacht club events ahead of us. Just the other day we started off the new year with the Salute The Compass event. A great turnout as always for the water part and a fabulous lunch provided by Robert’s Place

rounded off the day.

With the new year comes time to start updating the Log Book. Please review your information as it appears in the 2015 Log Book and submit any updates that need to be done for 2016. This may include a new picture of your boat, a change in phone number, email address, a change of boat, etc. Send your information to me at: “[email protected]”. There is also a handy-dandy form on the website under Membership/Forms/ called “Changes to Existing Membership Information.”

Membership fees for 2016 were due on January 1st. Many people are taking advantage of the e-Transfer method of payment and this works very well. Instructions on how to use this can be found on the website under the Membership tab.

Classified ads are not being reproduced in the Anchorline any longer but are still available on the website and a link will be provided in the Anchorline. Do check these out regularly as things are added from time to time.

And last, but not least, I’d like to take this opportunity to introduce the new Anchorline editor. Christine Purfield has volunteered to take on this task as well as that of Secretary for the club. I’d like to thank her for stepping up to the plate and taking this on. I have no doubt that Anchorline is in good hands! Good Luck Christine!

The Future of Paper Charts

The Canadian Hydrographic Service (CHS) is conducting a study on the future of paper charts and is interested in obtaining feedback from chart users on their perspectives on chart production, distribution and use. The CHS would like to hear about what clients want to see in paper charts (e.g., format, content and printing options). The responses from the consultations will be used to establish a set of options for the CHS to consider adopting.

If you are able to participate in a consultation you should contact Chantal Fontaine, Project Researcher/ Canadian Hydrographic Service/Pacific Region either by email or phone to set up a time for the consultation. Deadline for consultation appointments is January 15th. Chantal’s contact information is:

Email: [email protected] Cell Phone: 778-877-4380

The call should take no more than 45 minutes. Click here for the attachment outlining the purpose of the consultation and the questions that will be discussed during the consultation.

on a great menu. Many thanks to the Social Committee for their work in putting everything together for this event.

Darrel and I look forward to this year’s cruising and hope to see many of you out there with us.

Happy New Year Gillian Haines Vice Commodore

Salute the what? Submitted by: Christine Purfield MV “Lizzie”

You had to be there. It's the boat-ers' equivalent of the New Year's Polar Bear swim. As in, we keep our clothes on, but happily untie frozen lines, sit in cold boats, then motor out and wait for the Fleet Captain to tell us to turn north, east, south, and west while he reads out prayers to the water gods for fair winds and soft waters for the coming boating season. And we silently pray that we don't hit another boat in the process. Well, I'm assuming people kept their clothes on; we certainly did on Lizzie.

This was Lizzie's first Salute the Compass in her current life, al-though in a previous incarnation she was a pro, they tell me. That certainly came in handy because she at least seemed to know what to do.

At the skipper’s meeting, I kept waiting for someone to yell "we're all mad!" as Don Butt's camera went click, click and my feet went numb, numb. It actually felt warmer out on the water, although that might have had something to do with Lizzie's little heater working overtime.

It was quite something to watch the boats do a sort of choreogra-phy reminiscent of the "don't try this at home" slogan for dangerous stunts. Fortunately, at least one person on every boat appeared to know how to read a compass (thank you, Judy!) and we all turned the same way at the same time. Sort of.

Fleet Captain Mark very patiently waited for us all to get into position before reading the prayers. They're reproduced in this report for people whose false teeth were chattering so loudly that they couldn't hear the actual words. He

has a lovely soft voice, is my ex-cuse.

It was all over by 11:30 a.m. and we had time to get Lizzie back to her winter slumber at Degnen Bay before heading off over to the Rollo Centre to partake in Robert's excellent cuisine. The hot cider hit the spot and the food was deli-cious. The photos of the lunch (see the SBYC website for the full ar-ray) don't do it justice. How is it that a group that spent most of the time laughing over drink and good food can look like a bunch of gang-sters in photos?

Like I said, you had to be there. Another successful SBYC event!

On another note, Wanda is "retiring" from her Anchorline editor stint and for some incompre-hensible reason yours truly offered to take over. First, thank you so much, Wanda, for your excellent hard work to date. This little club can be proud of such a profes-sional looking newsletter! It's all down hill from here, I'm afraid.…

Second, I have this brilliant idea for enticing more people to come out to events and cruises: if you don't turn up, I pick a name at random from the membership roster and write about you in Anchorline as if you were there. Just adding a few bizarre details, of course. Sort of like being volunteered for commit-tee work if you're not at a meeting. What do you think? Just kidding. Sort of J

Happy New Year!

Salute The Compass

Offerings to the various wind gods for another year of calm seas and safe boating. In case you were wondering what was being said during the ceremony and couldn’t quite make it out over all the static on the radio, following is a reprint of the pertinent parts of the ceremony.

“…. Welcome to the 2016 salute the compass. On my command please face your vessels north.”

“…. please raise your glass in a toast to ‘Boreas’ the god of the north wind. May he bring us a gentle fresh breeze on hot calm days. To ‘Boreas’.”

“… face your vessels to the east. May ‘Eurus’ god of the east wind bring us fair winds and gentle swells throughout the boating season. To ‘Euros’.”

“… maneuver your vessels to the south. …. raise your glass to ‘Notus’ god of the south wind, may your warm breezes sweep the fog from our bows and keep our members safe. To ‘Notus’.”

“… turn your vessels to the west. Raise your glasses in a toast to ‘Zephyrus’ god of the west wind. May he always have beautiful sunsets and may Gabriola Passage always flow in the right direction to bring us safety home. To ‘Zephyrus’.”

“… this concludes our 2016 Salute the Compass, have a great boating season….”
