There are three general forms of simple future:
WILL
GOING TO
SHALL
We use will/ won’t for making decisions, offers, promising and predictions.
Negative form won’t (will + not) Contracted form ‘ll
DecisionsI won’t have the fish, I’ll have the steak. We’ll take the 6:30 train.
OffersI’ll help you with the homework. She’ll wake me up tomorrow.
PromisesI’ll always love you.I won’t tell anyone,
We use (be) going to to talk about future plans and predictions.
I’m going to work in the USA for three months. (plan)I think it’s going to rain this afternoon. (prediction)
Negative form (be) + not+ going to Interrogative (be) + person + going to
Will
Going to
We can use both will and going to for predictions, but:
Will – when the prediction comes from our own opinion.
I will be a millionaire in the future. Going to – when the prediction is based in a
fact. The show is going to be expensive. They’re
very famous!
We generally use shall in first person (singular – I/ plural – we) when we intend to be formal, and when we offer in questions.
Shall I open the window? We shall finish the meeting at 11:00.
Will/ won’t + infinitive You’ll love New York.I’ll phone her later.I’ll help you.I’ll pay you back tomorrow.
Predictions, instant decisions, offers and promises.
Going to + infinitive I’m going to see Tom tonight. It’s going to rain.
Future plans and predictions.
