Before we start……... You've worked on six SLUs so far. We hope you have enjoyed them and are looking forward to working on another one. This SLU is based on a theme that is important for all of us, 'Accidents and Safety: There are so many stories about accidents that people tell you, or you see on TV or read about in newspapers, that sometimes you wonder, 'Could they have been prevented?' We can't prevent all accidents but if we are more careful and safety conscious may be we can reduce their number and keep ourselves safe. The activities in this SLU may help you think about ways in which you can protect yourself and others from harm.

Activity - 1: Safety slogans Here are some interesting road safety slogans. Can you make up some of your own? Write them in the space below.

You can't get home, unless you're safe! If you know you are driving to your death - would you still drive so fast? Normal speed meets every need! Alert today - Alive tomorrow! Leave sooner, drive slower, live longer! Stop accidents before they stop you! Slow down! Your family will be waiting for you! Drive as if every child on the street were you own! Look every way every day! When you have an accident, who cries the most? Your family, your friends or you? Drive like hell and you will be there! Start early, drive slowly, reach safely.

Activity - 2: Do you find these two posters on road safety interesting? Can you design a poster describing some dos and don'ts on the road ?

Activity - 3: Funny reasons Here are some explanations car drivers have given to policemen after they have had an accident. How many of them will you accept as an explanation?

A pedestrian hit me and went under my car. A car came out of nowhere, hit my vehicle, and vanished. To avoid hitting the bumper of the car in front, I hit the pedestrian.

In my attempt to kill a fly, I drove into a telephone pole. I was thrown from my car as it left the road. I was later found in a ditch by some stray

cows. I thought my window was down; but I found it was up when I put my hand through it.

That's why I couldn't indicate which side I was turning. No one was to blame for the accident, but it never would have happened if the other

driver had been alert.

Can you think of some more funny explanations that drivers may give? Write them here.

Activity - 4: Traffic Signals Often we don't bother to read the signs on the road. This can be dangerous. Do you knowwhat these road signs mean? Write their meanings in the space below each sign. Have younoticed any other signs on the road? Draw the signs and share them with your class. (One hasbeen done for you.)

Activity - 4: Safety Measures We should be very careful when handling electricity, gas and sharp objects. Here are some safety tips you must follow when using electrical appliances. Don't insert bare wires directly into a socket but use a plug with pins. Don't change fused bulbs when the switch is on. Don't touch an electric switch or appliance when your hands are wet. Don't buy sub-standard electrical fittings to save money as this may result in serious

accidents. Turn off all electrical appliances such as fans and lights when leaving your home. Don't use electrical appliances with damaged cords or cracked or broken plugs. Turn off power points before plugging/unplugging appliances.

Can you make a list of safety measures to be kept in mind when dealing with gas, sharp objectsand fire.

Which two pairs of causes account for more deaths: poisoning and electrocution OR sudden deaths and falling? ....................................................................................................................................

....................................................................................................................................

...................................................................................................................................

Road accidents cause 35% of deaths. Can you find 4 other causes which equal the same percentage of deaths? ....................................................................................................................................

....................................................................................................................................

....................................................................................................................................

Can you make more questions like the above based on the pie-chart? .....................................................................................................................................

Flood, ………………………………………………..

Six percent of accidents happen because of 'natural causes'. Can you list out some natural causes?

Activity- 6: A lucky escape This is a true story about a boy who fell into a bore-well but, with great luck, was able to escape. A three-year-old boy fell into a 520-feet deep bore-well in the Krishnagiri district of Tamil Nadu.Police say that Guna, a farmer's son, did not fall all the way to the bottom of the bore-well. He wastrapped at 20 feet, but it took them over five hours to pull him out. 'The Police and RescueDepartment Officials dug a parallel pit to rescue him,' explained Superintendent of Police, M AshokKumar.

Guna fell into the newly sunk bore-well at 10 am. The bore-well was in their own property and he fell into it while playing with his brother. Their mother was washing nearby when the accident happened. The bore-well was sunk just three days ago but they did not find any water. The family had decided to give up digging any further. They had removed the pipe but had not filled the bore-well with mud.

Have you ever had any experience of a miraculous escape? Or have you heard any such stories in your area?

Have you read stories of escapes like this one?

Narrate these stories to your friends. Then try to write them in your notebook.
